Hey guys,

In about four weeks, I'm going to be going to a friend's birthday party - and, as is the tradition for students in Leeds, any party is also an excuse to dress up and look stupid. Hooray!

So, the costume theme for this party is "Cultural Icons of the Past 20 Years"... so, it's basically anyone or anything that's been in pop culture since 1987.

Does anyone have any suggestions as who/what I can go as?

Here are a few things to bear in mind:
  • I'm working full time, and try to have a social life from time to time, so it can't be anything that's going to take WEEKS to make (I'm also going to be out on location shooting a show for the week or so running right up to the party, so I don't have a huge amount of time). I don't just want it to be a store bought costume though, something a little more creative than that.

  • The same goes for cost - the cheaper the better, though I am willing to spend a little bit.

  • It's got to be easily recognisable.

Ok - anyone got any suggestions? Whoever comes up with the best idea will be the proud recipient of my eternal gratitude, respect, and a chunk of fxperience. Hooray!

I look forward to hearing your ideas!

Cheers,
Arktic.

You can dress up as an emo (skinny legs, tight shirt, clip on peircings, and fake cuts on wrist neutral..) .. ok jokes..
Well i'm not to sure what you mean by "pop culture"
You could dress up as CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow
Hmm I might come up with some ideas that you might actually think of doing, I have 6 fxperience, so i hope i win. haha

*Madonna from the pointy-boobs era?

Really depends on what point you're starting from - what age are you? What height, gender, hair colour, etc, might make it easier to think of something that would suit you! Cultural icon of past 20 years is pretty vague - here's some more thoughts in the meantime...

*Harold Shipman
*Jimmy Krankie
*Gary Glitter
*Hufty
*All the usual Little Britain characters
*Nathan Barley
*Weebl (from Weebl and Bob)

etc etc...

I wish I was Asian and had an Asian friend because I'd go as those "Wii Guys."

I'd knock on random doors all night saying "Wii would like to play..."

For those earlier years of 1987-1994 or so, this is what I would do:
-Find a black guy and get a feathered wig at a store, an opened button-up shirt, and some white-bleached jeans and go as Lethal Weapon.

Or, go as MC Hammer or Vanilla Ice.

Although, in all honesty, TMNT is the best suggestion that has been alive throughout the entirety of 1987-2007 thus far.

If you've got doubts, finding a brown bath robe and a $10 plastic lightsaber and going as a Jedi always works.

Although TMNT works as well.

You seriously believe (as they call him) "K-fed" (I know, i think its dumb too... but whatever) is a cultural icon. Hes a crappy rapper that had to give away tickets to his concert cause no one would by them, i'm being serious btw. I mean come on. remember "cultural icon"

BTW my pick is Jason Bourne, oh yeah

Shaq could so beat up K-Fed.

While Bourne could take down Shaq no questions asked it would be tough to pull off for a costume party(Unless you decide to kill someone with a book when you get to the party)

MC Hammer (from the "Stop, Hammertime music video)
Mario
A Power Ranger
Captain Planet
Wayne or Garth (Wayne's World)
Donkey Kong
Mortal Combat Character of choice (easy to make and recognize)
A Care Bear
Britney Spears (If you want to be ridiculous)

Also, I'm American, so I don't know if all of these apply to the UK. I grew up in the 90's, so most of this is 90's cultural stuff. More to come.

There are some very good suggestions so far - some that I've thought about, others I hadn't even considered.

I have a favourite from the suggestions so far, but the more the better!

Come on guys, what else you got for me?

Abraham Lincoln - If you have a black suit get a big top hat and a long fake beard. This works because it is incredible random especially in the UK. People like random and funny. Thats why Shaq works.

My suggestion (unless he's already been suggested)

It'd be easy enough to do, almost nobody is more iconic of 1980s music and we'd all get to demand pics of you with the moustache. Shouldn't be too hard to find a white vest and something similar to that yellow matador style thing he wore at Wembley. Only downside I can see is the kareoke possibilities wink

I'm really quite annoyed that KISS and Ziggy Stardust were 1970s, that could have been fun.

Ricky Gervais from the UK version of the Office.
-just wear a suit, grow a goatee and if your hair isn't black dye it.

Aladin - this would be hilariously random
-Bring around a small cheap carpet and everynow and then drop the carpet on the ground step on it and hold out your hand to the nearest girl and say "Do you trust me?" and start singing "A whole new world".

Kramer of Seinfeld. But you'd have to do the "Kramer-into-the-room". I've developed a very effective technique to impersonate this. Throw open the door and stagger into the room, then act as if you've been struck by a blinding blast of light. Spot on impersonation.

I agree. This is something that, knowing your tall and thin stature, would work really well and be easy enough to do. You just need too short slacks, plain pointed shoes, a Hawaiian shirt, and a coat over it.

Oh, and lots of gel or a wig to get the hair right. smile

When I was in high school I would always dress up as something outrageous and one year I went as Saddam Hussien. Its a very easy and cheap costume with most of the stuff I found around the house.

All you need:

-OD (olive drab) or green military BDU

-Black Beret with any kind of gold insignia

-Fake Moustache

- Aviator sunglasses

- Any kind of military ribbons/medals above the left pocket.

-Black boots are a nice touch but are not necessary

- and if you want, put a small pillow inside your jacket to give you that extra weight, if needed.

And of course play the part.

It may have already been said but what about.......*drum roll* A dalek?!!

That would be so awesome- the bulk of it could be made out of foam core- or cardboard mount board- lots of spray paint- you could make the little ball things around the bottom half of the dalek with those plastic balls you get from ball pits- at woolies (Woolworths) they're like £1.99 for 100- you'd only have to cut them in half with a good sharp handsaw andyou've got 200 there!

It does seem an immense task if you went with the dalek idea- but i assure you- everythign would be really cheap and you'd be the envy of everyone!

Oh man, that's amazing.

I just don't have the balls to do something like THAT though. Seriously cool though. And in an office. And infront of someone else that he convinced to take the picture. My hat is off to that man.

The duct-tape alien is awesome too, but I think it's a wee bit too much for my skills (plus, I'm 6' 6" - enough duct tape to cover me would cost waaaaay too much wink )

Keep the suggestions coming, I think I've picked my favourite so far - but these are great ideas, and I'm totally saving a few of them for parties to come - Halloween isn't too far away!

Cheers guys,

Ok! Well, the party has been and gone, and my costume went down pretty well! I ended going as.....

Marty McFly from back to the future! So the winner is Pooky!

Here's a pic of me as the world's tallest Marty McFly, and my mate Alex as a soldier from Gulf War I -

Thanks again for all your awesome suggestions, and Pooky - there's some FXperience on it's way to ya!

Cheers,
