The Trek casting news has finally abated, with the entire crew now re-cast with fresh, young faces. As we mentioned last week, in what is generally regarded as a genius move Simon Pegg is playing Scotty, while Sylar is Spock, Eomer is McCoy and, er, the MILF guy from American Pie is Sulu. It's an odd mixture of geek icons and relative unknowns and Slashfilm's put together an amusing visual guide. Let us know what you think!

Initially I was rather perplexed by Karl Urban's casting (as one person wrote: "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor not a model!"), but having seen this photo comparison I actually think there's real potential there. He's got the intensity require to capture that grumpy, cynical outlook.

Runner-up would be Mr Pegg, of course. wink

Quinto as Spock seems like a dead-on decision. I didn't think Pegg would be good, but the comparison pictures work. Also, Saldana has that same look as Uhura.

The one I'm puzzled by is Anton Yelchin. The kid looks like he's 15 in everything he's been in so far. He's going to look entirely too young.

Yeah, Yelchin's an odd one. I don't think I've actually seen him in anything, but he both looks and is too young, especially compared to the ages of the rest of the cast.

I'll still be amazed if the film works at all - the very concept of somebody else playing Kirk just seems odd to me. When they've kept to cast continuity so rigidly for almost 50 years it's going to be rather jarring - especially if Leonard Nimoy and (maybe) Shatner are still in it.

However, I imagine it'll be worth it to hear Simon Pegg shout "she cannae take it na more!"
