So we just submit any old movie to the cinema?
Are you guys looking for anything in particular? Short of grading, do you want effects-heavy movies?

Post 3 of 55
Nothing in particular, no. Essentially the cinema is exactly the same as normal....except you might win a greenscreen at the end of the month.
In terms of what's likely to win...it's essentially just got to be something that is 'good'. This might be something that really entertains us, or something that is of massively high quality, or something which is daring and pushes boundaries. It could even just be an effects test, if it's an amazing effects test.
It's also worth noting that the movie doesn't have to be entirely created this month. It can be something you've been working on for ages, just as long as it is submitted in November. It does need to be a new movie, though - not something that's been previous submitted.
We're hoping to do a new prize each month, if this goes well. Hopefully it'll encourage people to start making and submitting more movies and make the cinema a really thriving place again. This coupled with the ability to submit your work as YouTube links should really get people going, we hope!
Can't wait to see what you guys come up with this month.

This is one of the best video I've ever seen. I remember being in a bluesuit a couple of years ago. I played the guitar and keyed myself out... so the guitar just hoovered around...

that's cool. i'll participate i hope. cool video. if u do that each month, i might make a series or something. i'm pretty sure this will get the cinema going again cause lately, it hasn't been the most interesting place here.(it used to be though, but it's not ur fault)

Can we submit something which we have shown some people, but has not yet been submitted to the FXHome cinema?
You might know what I'm speaking of...

Post 9 of 55
Yup, as long as it's fresh to the cinema it's fine.
Essentially, the best way to look at it is that nothing's changed with regard to what you can and can't put in the FXhome cinema....except now you might win something at the end of the month.
The only slight change is that it can't be something that's been on Fxhome before, even if it's been 'away' for a while. For example, if Mecha and Sidey showed up tomorrow and re-submitted 'DXM', it wouldn't be eligible.
Otherwise, though, anything goes.
Something I originally forgot to mention in the news post: This greenscreen suit is worth $225. So it's a pretty spiffy prize!

If it's really, really good, will Tarn be included along with the greenscreen suit?

I doubt it. What use would it be unless it's really stretchy and you can get in there with him?
But maybe for the sake of legality there should be a -Tarn not included- dislcamer.

This kinda seems too general for me. Cause basically, the movies in the cinema right now should be considered as submitted movies. So i was wondering, do u like have to say that it's for the contest to be eligible?

Post 15 of 55
Am I eligible even though I already won a prize from FXHome? Because, you know, I am the proud owner of The Pulse. Don't get me wrong, The Pulse is maybe the only thing I'll ever need in my life, but that suit looks pretty awesome. And I'm going to work on something soon that I could really use that for...
This may be enough to pull me out of my proclaimed FXHome cinema retirement.

Rody - no, only films which go live in November are eligible.
Waser - yep, you're eligible! Although if you win we might hide another copy of Pulse in the leg just to frighten you. (did you know they're making Pulse 2 and 3 BACK TO BACK? OH HELL YES)
Everyone else - I'm a little concerned about people wanting to get into the suit while I'm still in it.
Anyway, no, I don't come with it. Also, you'll be getting a brand new suit straight from Tubetape.com, so it won't have been worn. It's better that way, trust me.

A few more things, sorry to sound too straightforward, but...
Can we submit more than one movie?
Can we submit under another user's gold membership?
Is there any prize for runner-up?

I want to get in on this as well. Sounds fun.
Like ben asked though can more than one film be submitted? All I have right now is an FX test, my first attempt at using VisionLab, involving a nosey squirrel, explosions and fire.

Yep, you can submit as many movies as you like. There's no restrictions as such, other than it has to be a film that is new to the FXhome.com cinema. Other than that, the submission rules are all exactly the same as normal for the FXhome.com cinema.

Are there any particular things in the films that will be more focused on? The use of green screening, general special effects or just the story? Or the whole aspect of the product.
Really need that suit for my next project.
Anyway, cool to have som "competitions" here. Though the fun of making movies should be the production itself, it is cool too have some more motivation.

No, there's nothing in particular we're looking for. We want people to keep on doing what they do, this is just an incentive to put that extra bit of effort in.
It's a way of us saying 'thanks' for providing us with something cool.

If you have seen Red vs Blue that is machinema, basicly a move or a series made using a gaming console.

Of course, I'd have to win it first...

If these lads don't win it I'm pretty sure there'll be blood all over the office: based on their posts in this thread they seem a bit keen. Although this could work out well for the FXHome team if they're not above accepting bribes and sexual favours.

What size is it in? Because it might not fit everyone

If it fits Tarn, anyone Jar Jar Binks-sized and smaller should fit, I presume.

Post 42 of 55
I think Jar Jar would have some trouble with the headpiece.
It's stretchy, so will fit most people, but if you're particularly massive there might be a few issues.

Is there any instructions on how you can make that invisible man?? It looks almost impossible to do!
Posted: Thu, 29th Nov 2007, 4:39pm
Post 44 of 55
All you need to do is film the scene 'empty', so that you have a background plate without any 'actors' etc.
Then you can remove the greenscreen suit using normal greenscreen keying methods, and then fill in the 'hole' using the background plate.
Posted: Thu, 29th Nov 2007, 4:46pm
Post 45 of 55
Ive done that with the Displacement option. However, the entire screen goes invisible...it doesn't seem possible to make just the green backdrop or suit invisible...let alone allow you to walk behind a computer monitor (or person)...am I missing something?

Post 46 of 55
When you key the greenscreen suit, you need to invert the suit so that ONLY the suit remains. THIS is the layer that you displace.
So you actually need three layers:
3: Original shot, with greenscreen suit keyed out, then inverted with displacement added.
2: Original shot, with greenscreen suit keyed out, leaving a hole.
1: Background plate, to fill in the hole.

Ahh yes..sort of like making a person hologramic in Star Wars.

Here's an image breakdown (hammer time!)....
The clean background plate (note lack of chair too):
Here's the original main shot, with no fiddling:
The main shot, with the greenscreen suit keyed out (note hole):
Comped together, the background plate 'fills in' the hole and also serves as an easy way to tidy up the keying glitches:
Meanwhile, here's another layer with the suit keyed and then inverted, so that ONLY the suit remains (have also added some blur to it, which will make the displacement look nicer later):
Here's the isolated suit layer composited onto the other layers (note the blur is retained without affecting the rest of the image - quite a cool effect in itself!):
A displacement filter is now added to the isolated suit layer, affecting all those below it:
To give it more shape, we added a quick particle effect over the top:
Finally, an object mask was added to the particle effect. This was set to the isolated suit layer. This causes the particle effect to share the same transparency data as the suit layer, so it is masked exactly according to the greenscreen.
Hope that helps!

It would also be great for making objects appear to be floating.
I hope whoever wins it ends up using it a lot, because there's a lot of potential here.

Hi, I've submitted some stuff and some of it is from my students. It was submitted about 3days ago. But it is still pending and i have no email saying anything is wrong. My students are really looking forward to the film being on the internet. Is the long wait just beacuse it's taking so long to look at each film along with all the other day to day work you have to do?
I'm not complaining, just if something is wrong with the films, I would like to know so I can sort it out, thats all.

Hi guys - we've been crazy busy this week on various...things, and there's also a mahoosive backlog to the cinema, due to you chaps all going totally nuts with the submissions! Which is, of course, great - but the result is that it's going to take us a little while to sort through 'em all.
As long as you've submitted it it'll count though, so don't worry if it hasn't gone up yet.
Thanks to everyone for their submissions, it's been a great month! Picking the winner is going to be difficult.

UPDATE: Well, November has now passed! We had a huge number of last-minute entries, so it's going to take a while to get through them.
We're also rather busy at the moment on...something else. However, we'll announce the winner of the suit as soon as we can!!
Great stuff guys!

Are there going to be any more competitions?
Obviously there would not be the amount of entries as there were this time, as a lot of us had films which we did not have any web space for. With the acceptance of you tube, I expect you guys were inundated.
However a competition each month would be good. Plus it would give some of us recognition.
Tube tape supplied the prize this time round. This has given them some publicity; other companies may be inclined to do the same.

Tarn you look very dashing in your green suit - although you do remind me a bit of the nihilists from the Big Lebowski, when he has the dream and they're all running after him with big scissors.
