Prepare yourselves for the biggest, best update we’ve ever done to the Lab range – we’ve got new effects, new compositing tools, new filters and a slick, re-designed interface. There’s so much new stuff, in fact, that we recommend you steel yourself and brace for extreme excitement before reading more...

There’s a lot to cover here, so take a deep breath. This is the most significant change to the Lab products since their initial launch. If you already own a Lab product, simply head to your downloads area to get your free update!

We've also got an Astounding Christmas Deal for people purchasing or upgrading to VisionLab Studio that you won't want to miss. See below for more info.

Pimp my Lab

CompositeLab Pro, EffectsLab Pro and VisionLab Studio have all received a major makeover. We’ve darkened down the interface, making it both sexier and easier to use. The intention is to make the area surrounding your canvas less distracting, enabling you to focus more easily on the image itself – vital if you’re performing delicate colour grading.

You’ll also find lots of little green question marks scattered around the place, which will take you instantly to the correct page of the (re-designed) manual. We hope this should prove particularly useful for new users.

All the filter thumbnail images have been updated to give you a better idea of what everything does, playback controls have been tweaked to be better positioned and there’s improved feedback when rendering or importing.

Talking of rendering, we’ve completely re-worked the render system, which now allows you to choose your own AVI or MOV video codec, while Alpha rendering has been vastly improved and can be included in single file renders. Veteran users will also be pleased to hear that the widescreen tag is now set correctly!

And yes, we now officially support Windows Vista.

Did we mention that we’re doing an Astounding Christmas Deal on purchasing or upgrading to VisionLab Studio this year? See the end of the post for more info.

VisionLab Studio

Our flagship product just got even better.

Top of the list is the electrifying new Lightning Engine. A VisionLab exclusive, this shocking new engine can create a huge variety of electrical effects, from realistic storm lightning to Emperor Palpatine-style extravaganzas. This engine incorporates extensive research into actual lightning behaviour and is capable of some surprising results. Shazam!

The result of a curious experiment, the new Neon Object opens up all kinds of exciting possibilities for VisionLab users. Combining the dual features of Neon Light and keying, Neon Object enables you to use another object’s alpha channel to create the Neon Light shape.

What does that actually mean? Well...for starters, you could wrap a pole in green fabric (or paint it), then simply key out the green, apply the Neon Object and you’ve got a lightsword – no rotoscoping required. It won’t work for super-fast motion, but for anything else it’s great. There’s also hundreds of other uses – ever wanted to make that TRON fanfilm?

Other VisionLab exclusives include an exciting selection of grading filters, including vignette, color temperature and threshold pro. Vignette in particular is a favourite of ours and they all have a bunch of settings for customisation.

There really has never been a better time to make the leap to VisionLab Studio, especially with our Astounding Christmas Deal (30% off the standard price or upgrade price + free box shipping + free VideoWrap!). More info on that in a moment.

There’s lots of new stuff for CompositeLab Pro and EffectsLab Pro users, too – but don’t forget that VisionLab customers also get all of these new features...

EffectsLab Pro

The Laser Engine is an evolution of the Neon Light Engine, introducing a 2-point laser drawing system. Combined with adjustable start and end widths, this can make for some quick and easy lightsword rotoscoping (old-timer FXhomers may remember this from an earlier product...), but its main use is to create sci-fi laser blasts. An in-built perspective system enables you to simulate lasers firing away or towards the camera with ease.

We’ve also massively improved the rendering system for the Muzzle Flash and Particle Engines, which means that you’ll now enjoy much higher quality results, especially when dealing with extremely dense particle clouds.

CompositeLab Pro

If you’ve checked out PhotoKey, our brand new greenscreen photography application, you’ll have noticed that its keying system is rather different to the color difference filter in CompositeLab. During development of PhotoKey we created a brand new keying algorithm that is extremely efficient and high quality, especially when dealing with well-lit greenscreens.

This new system has now made its way into CompositeLab Pro in the form of the auto color difference key. While it may not have the most exciting of names, the new auto-key can provide some amazing results and far cleaner composites. Give it a try!

The Astounding Christmas Deal
(sponsored by Santa)

As we might already have mentioned, we’re doing an Astounding Christmas Deal this year which beats anything we’ve done before.

The money I got from Advanced Placement Strategies for passing my AP tests, I wonder where it will go?

Oh, right, methinks I just saw a great way to spend all that money...

Hey Junuc Kleen,

It doesn't matter which Lab products you currently have (Lite or Pro, one product or EffectsLab and CompositeLab) you get 30% off your upgrade cost!

If you go for the boxed delivered version then you get VideoWrap as well (if you're in the first 100 people).

The deal's the same for new purchaser AND upgraders - it's the best deal we've ever done!

Has the store not been updated yet? If you select not to upgrade and buy the full version it still says $499.99.

Where are you clicking upgrade? You don't need to buy anything as you've already got VisionLab - just head to your downloads section to get the latest installer.

Of course, if you'd like to buy another copy of VisionLab, you're more than welcome. wink

We always make any point releases (eg 1.2, 1.5 etc) a free update. Any totally new versions (eg 2.something) would require an upgrade fee.

We did consider calling this release "version 2", given how much cool new stuff has gone into it. But it's Christmas time and we were feeling generous, so we've made it a free update for current users smile

Any chance this update makes the app intel native? I'm getting a sour sour taste in my mouth, worse than the AlamDV 2 was supposed to get a free update to OS X event. Don't get me wrong I think the choice to move to EffectsLab was the right one, and there was a hefty discount for AlamDV 2 users. But I've simply paid hundreds of dollars for a product that frankly doesn't do what it needs to do, what I paid for it to do. It's too slow in Rosetta to be more functional than a toy and I've pretty much moved onto other products. I fear if there ever is a UB it will be in the fabled VisonLab V2 and be a fee upgrade. I've been with FX for a long time and sank many dollars into this but I can't hang on anymore. If I could request a refund for VisionLab I would at this point since it hasn't done what it needs to do since I purchased it. If there ever is a UB, it sure better be free for VisonLab purchasers regardless of what version it finally comes down on, V2, V3, etc... It's been fun, I've enjoyed watching the company grow, I've enjoyed all the products to this point but alas I fear FX has irreparably alienated many of the customers that helped them get to where they are today. Good luck with future endeavors, I bear no ill will toward FX but alas the road they are on is one I can no longer follow.

OK, I'm a noob... what do you mean by "head to your downloads area"? I clicked "Downloads" on the navigation bar and then clicked "My Programs and Keys". It then had me enter my password again, and I was shown a page that allowed me to downlad the "Installer" and "Product Key", but under "CompositeLab Lite (Windows)" it said something about the new additions to version 1.002.003. What am I doing wrong?

Hey Macdude22,

While we've never said that the current products would make the move to Universal Binary it is the direction we want to go in with our software. As you get this update for free we really hope you give it a go - there have been some minor performance improvements as well.

We really feel your pain but we are still held back by third-party products yet to make the transition to UB - some companies are slower than others due to the small size of the Mac market.

We've always tried to keep our software up-to-date on both platforms and we've had very few complaints about our software on Intel Macs (after all even on the slowest dual-core Intel Macs it runs as fast as a decent G5).

As you know we are a tiny team so development is hard but we've learnt our lesson. Future "Lab" software will NOT use the same third-party products which have held us back in this annoying way on the Intel Mac platform.

Thanks for your support, we hope you stick around a bit longer.

------------------------------------

Hey Snook360,

This software is an update to the Pro and Studio software, not the Lite software. Thanks.

I feel for you, I really do. I became very attached to these products over the years from my first hint of them off one of the first MacAddict disks. But to be honest, It's been almost 2 years since Apple stopped PPC production. I (and likely others) purchased these products under the assumption they would be updated to a Universal Binary. I understand the reasoning behind the problems, but this company was partially built on the loyalty of mac users such as myself and we've been relegated to second class citizens for the past 2 years, and into the foreseeable future. The reason I updated to VisionLab in the first place was for the slight performance boost over the Lite products in Rosetta but alas it's not particularly fast even with that. I'll be peeking in from time to time but I've weened my self off of the products anymore. If a UB version of VL is released at some point any cost more than free won't be bringing me back into the the fold. Can't help how I feel about the situation, I wish it were different, and I do hope FX can get a UB hammered out soon but at this point I can't hold my breath any longer, I'm turning blue. I've migrated my workflow to other products at this point (meager as my workflow is).

You need to buy the box version to get Video Wrap for free. But if you buy the box version you get free shipping, and you can download the latest VisionLab from your downloads once you purchase anyway!

Get the boxed version, its win win!

VisionLab 1.5 has a lot more new features than just the lightning engine biggrin Not to mention all the grading, keying and compositing tools you would already gain by upgrading from EffectsLab.

30% discount on upgrades and new purchases is great value for all the extra cool stuff.

However i cant upgrade effectslab to visionlab via an upgrade option can i, in other words i'd have to purchase the visionlab as a separate package.

I am in the same boat as Macdude, regarding the Intel / UB. Hopefully there will be a way to phase out these third-party products and integrate the newer, UB-capable products into future versions of vLab / eLab / cLab.

For what it's worth, offering a free cross-grade to the current Intel Mac folks might help (last time I checked there was a $40 fee for this). I have a Windows XP gaming partition on my iMac, and that might work out well. If vLab currently runs about the same on XP as it does on the Intel Macs, then, it may not be worth installing it on the Windows side after all. Not sure if anyone has any real-world comparisons between Windows vLab and MacIntel vLab.

And I do have to add that vLab does run at usable (but not fantastic) speeds under Rosetta, and it is stable. Having the massive speed boost from UB would be tremendous, especially since I'm working in HD now.

As I stated in an earlier post, I won't purchase anything new here that is not UB (VideoWrap was something I had my eye on too sad ) but I will stand by and see where things go.

Finally, thank you guys for this free upgrade. It is much appreciated. I will definitely be checking this out over the next few days! smile

Theres no cross-grade fee anymore. Your key will work on both the Mac and Windows versions. And you should be able to download installers for either OS from your downloads page.

Drooool. I really want to use that lightning engine, and I was already going to buy VideoWrap. Unfortunately I don't have the $250 to spare for VL (upgrade deduction + xmas deduction + VW). Though I love the new features to the software I have. But man, a lightning engine isn't something you can really get anywhere else. In particle software and compositing packages, you have to utilize the tools and do some crazy stuff to get that kind of thing. But a lightning generator. Damn.

I'm on the fence wit the other Mac users too. The update looks very nifty congrats to you guys for making the achievement with the update, looks like you've made many people happy! biggrin

I'm gonna have to hold back again though. My friend purchased VLab a long while ago and used it on his intel mac and I had a play about with it and although it did run and it was a great program, I just couldn't get on with slowing down to use it. Jumping from quick programs into sluggish ones would kill me. With the machine we all work and play on these days, I fell into a very impatient state of mind with using computers so it would be agony from my experience using the program on mac. Not to say the speed of it would bother anyone else, just me!

So, I'll let the pennies rest some more and hope you guys manage to get a UB version out asap!

Also I'm aware of being able to use Bootcamp and run the windows version but I couldn't be doing with having to restart the machine everytime i wanted to do anything.

Have fun with it guys, look forward to seeing your vids!

Does it work if you have Composite lab lite? I repeat, does it work if you have composite lab lite. If so, I can't find anything in the Downloads section.

Just been playing around with the new Neon Object funtion.. Oh yes!!

So many things are now possible, now that you can use an alpha to create the neon glow >> Glowing logos, text, green/blue screen (see original example), even a ghostbusters proton stream!!! etc.. etc ..

Also like the idea of recreating the TRON look biggrin

And i've not even started on the lightning engine yet!!

When you make a lightsaber with the new way to do it with the key on the green saber is it possible to go back and adjust the keyframes when it was going too fast for it to work right?

With the new method, by using an alpha from the key'd green saber, no keyframes are used.
This is because its using the alpha of the Green key'd blade to generate the glow.

For fast movements etc, I would use the keyframe method for greater control etc

Simple put, use one or the other method when appropriate

Wow guys, thanks for all the great support! Make it all worthwhile...

This update has been hard to put together and we ended up doing rather more than the cosmetic changes and bug fixes we planned.

The lack of Universal Binary for Intel Mac is a pain but performance is improved and under Windows it is better than ever. Someone asked about performance running the programs on an Intel Mac under Windows compared to emulated under Rosetta. Well, depending on your specs it will be between 3-8 times faster under Windows - its really a MASSIVE difference. If you do have and Intel Mac with Windows installed this is what we would suggest at the moment to get the best from the software and the is no cross-grade fee!

Thanks again guys - we really can't wait to see what you get out of the software!

Thanks for this amazing news and amazing update - it looks fantastic and I've just downloaded the installer so I can update... however:

I use VisionLab Studio in Vista. Now, when I install the 1.5 version, can I simply install over the top of my existing VisionLab Studio or do I need to do a complete un-install and then apply the upgrade? I know the updates usually install right over the top, but before I take the plunge and regret it I thought it was worth asking smile

To be honest I would always uninstall the older software first just to be sure. If you have any problems after that try a clean reinstall. It should all be pretty painless.

Ok, so I've got a bit of a financial question here.

I want to get Visionlab, and was going to wait until I got my Mac before college next summer. I've tried out finding out which discounts I get when, but the numbers are all messed up and lower now cause of the Xmas sale.

First, what would the regular price be for upgrading from Compositelab Pro (windows) to Visonlab for Mac?

Second, what would be the price (again, next summer) of switching from Visionlab Windows to Mac?

I'm asking because depending on the prices, it might be more cost effective to just get it for Windows now and pay the switch cost to Mac later, or to simply wait to upgrade until the summer...

Any help? Thanks.

$385.

Same price to go from CLab Pro (Win) to VisionLab (Win).

That's without the 30% discount.

There's no cross-grade fee any more. Your Downloads page will have links to both platform installers.

You can only install it on 1 computer at a time (unless you buy 2 licenses), but you can uninstall from one platform and then install on the other.

Ah, that's definitely nifty, and I didn't know you could buy it once and install it on either OS. I'll definitely see about taking advantage of this offer then!

Hi...
I am confused about the free gift VideoWrap . I tried to order in the same minute I got the e mail from your company about the Christmas special, and all I got it was VisionLab Studio box ,with the free shipping but no VideoWrap at all.I ad to the cart VideoWrap and the price went up 79 more. The VideoWrap it is 49-59 and now it is 79.Can you please clear this because I want to check out and finally buy this ,but if I do not get that VideoWrap for free than I will buy it some other time this month or next month (It is, or not for free?)
Thank you...

Well I just bought VisionLab Studio. I had CompositeLab pro and EffectsLab pro before. You guys love breaking my bank LOL. Heck I just purchased Photokey a few days ago. I did jump the gun however and bought the download version before fully reading I had to get the boxed version to get Videowrap free. Oh well, I was to excited and wanted to hurry and get it. I have been contemplating on buying VisionLab for 2 weeks now, the 30% discount sealed the deal. Thanks guys, I love your software.

PS: My wife hates you guys LOL

Downloaded it--Awesome!!! I'm extremely happy with it. Neon light -> object mask Tarn was talking about is great (yes, it should work great for lightsabers, as he said), the new gradings are great (I really like the vignette and threshold: pro), I am utterly bamboozeled by the lightning effect, and the laser will come in handy, too...

schwar wrote:

Yeah, I noticed that, actually. Yay!

Now, for the 16:9 rendering Tarn talked about, for me, it still isn't 16:9 - even though it IS better than before! Before, it was just plain 4:3; now, it's like in-between the two. It's kinda odd, but I don't mind it, since (1) it's always possible (and easy) to fix in your NLE and (2) all my upcoming movies will be in 2.35:1, and it works fine with that format...

- Plainly

PS: Oh yeah, forgot to mention... THANK YOU. smile

Count me among the ranks of those confused. I now have Elab Pro. The way I read this there was a free update to Elab Pro 1.5. I got that and downloaded it. I get confused when I try to upgrade. I am considering upgrading to Vision Studio. Is there an upgrade path from Elab Pro to Vision Studio. If so, what would the price, including the Christmas discount, etc?

Ok so I just had a look, and on complab and effectslab pro in you downloads it still says download version 1.005.xxx (hint its wrong!) if you click on the whats new it gives you the updates for the 1.5 version, so its a free update to effectslab BUT a cheap upgrade from effectslab to vision lab.

I think...(Take it as writ till corrected :p)

EDIT: well, someones got the wrong numbers, cause the newsletter said 1.5 but the d/ls everywhere say 1.005...

1.5 = 1.005

Think of 1.5 as the product marketing version and 1.005 as the detailed technical version.

If you already own ELab Pro then you get a free update to ELab Pro 1.5. (1.005.xxx)

If you already own CLab Pro then you get a free update to CLab Pro 1.5. (1.005.xxx)

If you already own VLab then you get a free update to VLab 1.5. (1.005.xxx)

rickblackmon wrote:

With the current 30% discount, the upgrade from ELab Pro to Vision Lab Studio is $269.50.

Normal upgrade price from ELab Pro to VLab is $385.

I'm still waiting for my upgrade from AlamDV2 to FlareDV.

Ah, remember the days? Got us all giddy with excitement of choosing the name of AlamDV3, and then they didn't even use any of them. God, and 'DV' at the end sounds so outdated now.

VisionLab HD is the most baller program name ever.

It says I don't own any products now. What? (Is there any upgrade deduction from Effectslab Lite to Visionlab? I'm gonna milk that AlamDV2 purchase for all it's worth. smile)

Actually, one member suggested FXLab. (It stuck with me, I didn't just go back to prove you wrong. smile)

And then Redhawk suggested the "Pro" suffix in the topic, which also came to life.

Maybe I'm just upset because I loved FlareDV. I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way, as for the longest time it had the most votes by a large majority. (And still was the winner in the name game.)

Ah, the good old blue days of FXHome.

This is a quick clip I did using the Neon Object engine. The blade of the prop was wrapped in green duct tape. No keyframing or masking whatsoever. Spiffy.

I have a 17" Mac Book Pro that I purchased brand new from Apple 3 months ago. 2.4GHZ duo, 10.4.10, 4G Ram.

Visionlab runs fine on my comp. I'm sure it's not as fast as a UB version, but I would hardly describe it as sluggish???

We've added a price list to the original post so its easier to see the discount you'll get.

Note that if you go for the boxed copy of VisionLab then you'll not see VideoWrap in your store selection. We add in the free boxed copy this end so don't worry about it!

Halivud Estevez - We are not aware of any bugs to do with interlaced and progressive footage. The software should work just fine.

Argh Free crossgrades announced a couple weeks after I pay to switch from ELab & CLab Pro Windows to OSX! crazy

The new laser effect looks really useful. And a lightning generator!

Think I may have to look at the cost of the upgrade from CLab/ELab Pro to Visionlab..

Hmmm
How come a UK user upgrading from two Pro products to VL pays £179 but a US user pays $188 (£92)? Doesn't seem very fair sad

The values are set and don't take into account the exchange rate. If they did it would mean vision lab would be nearly $600 instead of $500.

It is slightly annoying, espeicaly when I tried to pay in dollars to save about £50, but it would only default to letting me pay in pounds. But its still the best £300 I've spent and worth every penny. And when you get free updates like this one its even better smile

Perhaps this temporary price cut should be implemented into the discount calculator function in the store for the time being?

I keep getting the normal upgrade price when I do the calculation.

What would upgrading from Clab Pro and ELab Lite to VLab WITH the Xmas discount cost me?

Hi guys, thanks again for all your support on this update.

If you have any questions on prices please do not hesitate to ask here or email support@fxhome.com

We've just uploaded a small update to 1.5 (1.005.008 now) to fix a couple of teething issues some people experienced. It should now run fine on computers not connected to the internet and on the Mac we've fixed an issue with the particle engine and improved performance.

I would like to also take this chance to thank the beta team for their hard work on this release - yet again they have done a great job!

Have a great weekend everyone.

The currency of the UK is measured in pounds. Ours is measured in dollars. Though I dont understand their currency, I know that the worth of a pound is more than that of one dollar.

Is that what you were asking?

MOD COMMENT: This is actually incorrect. The British pound is worth about double compared to the dollar at the moment. Sorry guys. wink

VisionLab is a single application with all the functionality of EffectsLab and CompositeLab, and quite a bit more, in one interface.

Check out the comparison chart and download the demo to check it out.

Good for you! VisionLab is a fine thing.

Christianfilmer100001 - a crossgrade is switching from a Windows product to a Mac product, or vice versa. With the upgrade, you get a keyfile that will work with either platform, so you can switch from one to the other without paying.

A pound is worth considerably more than a dollar. At the moment one pound is worth around two dollars.

Just bought my boxed upgrade to Vision Lab with free Video Wrap! Looking forward to receiving my big parcel and using the new lightning engine. Now I just have to convince someone to give it to me for Christmas!

EDIT - cool, my logo has changed already to show Vision Lab instead of ELab Pro and CLab Pro. If only we still had lightsabres to show our force, mine would be huge now wink

Edit: How do I show that I got VideoWrap too? or won't it show up because I got it for free?

Also, since I got the boxed version can I install it on more than one computer? Because, I'm getting a new laptop soon and it would be loads better on there.

Great news!

You've only purchased 1 copy of VisionLab so it can only be installed on 1 machine at a time unless you buy another copy.

Your VideoWrap icon will appear once you install and register the boxed version you get (you don't need to install it on the same machine you install VisionLab on).

Thanks again.

So, question...

I'm almost definitely going to buy Visionlab now. The only thing is, I want to know if it's got as good of keying technology as say... Serious magic?

Obviously, adobe bought Serious magic and now it's super expensive, but Is the keying at least close to being as good?

Also, Does the muzzleflash engine look MUCH better then before, or just optimized/tweaked?

That question was answered. Yes you will recieve VideoWrap with VisionLab. Then, once recieved, install and register. That will make the icon appear.

I really like this new update, it's wonderful. However I noticed a misleading word in the interface, for the pixel aspect ratio it reads 'aspect ratio' when it seems like 'pixel ratio' would be less confusing.

At a guess I'd say they would be third party plugins/standalone applications like winmorph and such. The muzzle engine from effectslab and visionlab would probably be Muzzleplug, but I have no idea what power plug could be though.

But that' just guesswork. smile

I'm willing to bet PowerPlug is for the Lightning engine - it has that little blue bolt logo on it similar to the orange MuzzlePlug logo on the Muzzle Flash engine... eek

Really cool... The best thing for me though isn't the laser engine or the new interface, but the fact that it can finally render compressions as opposed to behemoth uncompressed files. Woohoo!

MuzzlePlug and PowerPlug look to both be great bounds that will finally allow one to easily take pesky lightning and muzzle flash effects out of your videos.

Thanks Evman!! Thanks to everyone else that's supported us this year, too. As always, your custom is much appreciated. smile

With so many people moving on up to VisionLab, I can't wait to see how this impacts on your movies next year. I think we're going to see some exciting projects in the works.

to bad i can't get it. but i'll get composite lab so i'll be fine. I'm not a big fan of particles anyways. I tried the demo once and I'm really not that great at it.

Blast! I don't have money for this update until after the holiday. (Spent what I had on buying gifts to give) Still, a great deal that I completely recommend. I can just picture a fresh new boxed Visionlab with a free copy of VideoWrap.

Ah.....the days at FXHome have changed. I remember when I was skeptic with the whole download-only back in the AlamDV days. I got hooked then, I wonder how people get hooked now with discounts and free stuff and boxed copies, it's surreal. What's more, you guys have basically created a market yourselves comprised of people interested in effects enough to spill $500, but not enough for After Effects or simply because they love FXHome. And even better, you're getting a lot of those wanting AE simply because your product is more functional-with-ease. I love it. Congrats, guys! Congrats Evman on the purchase!

My how things have changed. Merry Christmas!

Cheers Atom!

It has indeed been a bit of a crazy year for us. My only slight regret is that we haven't been able to focus on the community's work as much as we have previous years, due to all the hectic product-related stuff we've had to do. There's been a few bits and pieces, such as the Fingerman coverage, of course, but not nearly as much as I'd like.

That'll hopefully change early in 2008, as I've got quite a few funky spotlights in the works which hopefully won't have to be delayed any longer! You know who you are, and I'm looking forward to putting them together. wink

Click on the "My Account" tab up top. After you load your account go to "Programs and Keys" and click on that link and it will take you to your paid programs to download.

Welcome aboard!
