I'm wondering whether there's any way to reverse particle effects so that the particles go inwards towards the emitter (ironic, i know), instead of being emitted from it?

You could create the effect with particles moving outwards, then export that as a mov file. Then reimport to mov file but reverse it so it plays backwards

And how would you reverse it? Sorry, I'm a bit of a beginner with actual movie editing, though i've been using special effects for a while...

Click the layer's title track to display its properties in the toolbox, then tick 'reverse'.
