We don't particularly want a 'standard commercial' - if we wanted to go that route, we'd simply do it ourselves or hire an advertising company to put something 'professional' together for us.
What we really want is to have something original and innovative and a bit 'different' from the standard. It's a chance to promote a product, but in a fun, witty way.
Ideally it would be something that is entertaining regardless of whether the viewer is directly interested in VideoWrap itself. Hence if you look at Karl's excellent "I'm an iPod" spoof that's been posted as a response, it's clearly promoting VideoWrap, but at the same time it's an entertaining little spoof all by itself.
-Are inside jokes a good or a bad idea (a la Monkey Madness) and do you think it would be too bold to include any?
If the entire thing hinges around inside jokes then it'd probably be a bit too internal to work effectively. Including 'throwaway' inside jokes is fine, though.
It's worth remembering that this competition is open to everyone, regardless of whether they own an FXhome product or not. As such, we'er hoping to get entries from outside of the FXhome community as well, so we won't be judging the winners on the basis of in-jokes (unlike the other competition you reference, where Monkey Madness clearly had a boost due to being packed with fun FXhome references).
-What kind of format are you looking for? Any story/structure, or just anything that promotes the product? As in, a reel of badass cinematography flashing 'VIDEOWRAP!P!!!!11" or a well-paced short that incorporates the thing?
Which I know isn't terribly useful...but it can be a short film that incorporates VideoWrap in an unexpected manner, or a single sequence that isn't an entire short film but is memorable in its own way, or a alternate take on a 'classic' commercial template, it can be abstract, or literal. It can be a spoof of a movie with an amusing twist that incorporates VideoWrap somehow...it's up to you.
The idea is key. It needs to be something that entertains, or makes people think, and which is related to VideoWrap. The integration of VideoWrap can either be very tight, being the whole point, or it can be quite loose and almost 'throwaway', or maybe just a twist right at the end.
-Is YouTube the only means of submission? I'm a big fan of proper grading/color/contrast and YouTube tends to kill all of those, in more ways than just simple compression does (visit Redemption on my YouTube account to see how it's both stretch, darkened, and unsynchronized). Are any other means (e.g. uploading to personal server) available for getting the film to you? This would, of course, be in addition to submitting a YouTube respnse?
Do feel free to include a link to a high quality version in the YouTube description, that's fine.
As we said in the video, the key here is the idea itself, rather than the technical execution. So if someone has an awesome idea but only has a 15 year old hi8 handycam, they've got just as much chance of winning as someone with an HVX.
Of course, having said that, if there are two entries with equally awesome ideas, then the technically superior one is likely to have the edge.
However, crucially, a technically superior film will not win out over a film that has a superior idea.
