We’re offering $1000 to whoever creates the best short film about VideoWrap! And ANYBODY can enter, you don’t need to already own one of our products.

As well as the $1000 top prize, we’ve also got 4 runner-up prizes of $100 each and your entries will also get exposure through YouTube and the FXhome.com website.

This competition isn’t about high quality equipment, so don’t worry if you’ve only got a basic camera. We don’t care about that – we’re looking for great IDEAS. The $1000 top prize will go to the video with the best idea.

The rules

1. Entries can be a maximum of 5 minutes long. The shorter the better in most cases.
2. The videos have to be positive about VideoWrap!
3. You’ve got to include the VideoWrap banner at the end of the video – more details on that in a moment.
4. All entries must be submitted by March 14th 2008.
5. You’ve got to have a PayPal account so that if you win we can send you your prize. Signing up for PayPal is totally free and very easy.

How to enter

We want all competition entries to be submitted as video responses to the competition’s YouTube video, so once you’ve finished your entry just hit the ‘post a video response’ link on this YouTube page:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzVa6z-fow4

Don’t forget to include the VideoWrap banner, which you can find here:

http://fxhome.com/competition/

What is VideoWrap?

VideoWrap is designed to make converting videos really easy, whether you want to watch them on your iPod, your PS3 or Xbox360, your mobile phone or whatever. It’s even got a special setting that helps to make your videos look great on YouTube, and it’s all available for just $49.

Click here to find out more!

We can’t wait to see what you all come up with – and don’t forget, it’s $1000 for the winner and there’s 4 runner-up prizes of $100 each!

Note: The FXhome team's verdict will be final, correct and glorious. Prize amounts are in US dollars.

Although I'm not going to be entering this I thinks it's a pretty good idea. One question though, the prize is $1000, anyone can enter...does that mean that if someone in the UK won then they would get £1000 or would it be converted into £510? Just wondering smile.

Looking forward to the entries. And Tarn and Schwar were in perfect harmony at the end...sort of.

-Regards
B3N

P.S.Have you guys thought about putting up the latest product logos for download for us artists yet?

The prize is $1000 US dollars, if the winner is from another country they'll get whatever the conversion rate equivalent is at the time of the prize-giving!

Good luck everyone!

I could really do with the money right about now. I've started working on something already (the perks of being off college sick) so hopefully I'll find time to finish it.

As long as you (or a parent, family member or friend you trust) has a Paypal account I don't think age will be an issue. Some of our most creative content in the past has come from younger FXhomers.

Good luck with the competition!

Woohoo!

I am definitely entering (this also reminds me I need to post the winners to the holiday thing, whoops) but I also have a few questions. As you're the 'client', as it were, I want to know the following:

- Are you looking to 'sell' your product, or just generate interest through a short film? As in, should this be more like an advert (a la DVXUser's Adfest) or a short film hat promotes the software (a la Aculag's 'Animus')

-Are inside jokes a good or a bad idea (a la Monkey Madness) and do you think it would be too bold to include any?

-What kind of format are you looking for? Any story/structure, or just anything that promotes the product? As in, a reel of badass cinematography flashing 'VIDEOWRAP!P!!!!11" or a well-paced short that incorporates the thing?

-Is YouTube the only means of submission? I'm a big fan of proper grading/color/contrast and YouTube tends to kill all of those, in more ways than just simple compression does (visit Redemption on my YouTube account to see how it's both stretch, darkened, and unsynchronized). Are any other means (e.g. uploading to personal server) available for getting the film to you? This would, of course, be in addition to submitting a YouTube response?

All-in-all, great, great contest idea; and I apologize for asking tons of question ad nauseam, I just wanted to be thorough. If I end up submitting on time and winning, that would be perfect for me, as it would allow me a big enough boost to afford USC's film school(!!!!!). biggrin

I'm sure Tarn will answer your questions far better than me in the morning but you really have quite an open ended brief.

Generating interest in the product is the main point of the competition from our point-of-view.

If you picked to make a standard 30-second TV style advert with loads of motion graphics and voice over that would be fine (as long as the idea was strong).

Just as good, if not better, would be a story based short which included VideoWrap in some way - something people would really enjoy watching. I think Aculag will be uploading an example of this in the next day or so.

Either, actually.

We don't particularly want a 'standard commercial' - if we wanted to go that route, we'd simply do it ourselves or hire an advertising company to put something 'professional' together for us.

What we really want is to have something original and innovative and a bit 'different' from the standard. It's a chance to promote a product, but in a fun, witty way.

Ideally it would be something that is entertaining regardless of whether the viewer is directly interested in VideoWrap itself. Hence if you look at Karl's excellent "I'm an iPod" spoof that's been posted as a response, it's clearly promoting VideoWrap, but at the same time it's an entertaining little spoof all by itself.

-Are inside jokes a good or a bad idea (a la Monkey Madness) and do you think it would be too bold to include any?
If the entire thing hinges around inside jokes then it'd probably be a bit too internal to work effectively. Including 'throwaway' inside jokes is fine, though.

It's worth remembering that this competition is open to everyone, regardless of whether they own an FXhome product or not. As such, we'er hoping to get entries from outside of the FXhome community as well, so we won't be judging the winners on the basis of in-jokes (unlike the other competition you reference, where Monkey Madness clearly had a boost due to being packed with fun FXhome references).

-What kind of format are you looking for? Any story/structure, or just anything that promotes the product? As in, a reel of badass cinematography flashing 'VIDEOWRAP!P!!!!11" or a well-paced short that incorporates the thing?
Anything, really. smile Which I know isn't terribly useful...but it can be a short film that incorporates VideoWrap in an unexpected manner, or a single sequence that isn't an entire short film but is memorable in its own way, or a alternate take on a 'classic' commercial template, it can be abstract, or literal. It can be a spoof of a movie with an amusing twist that incorporates VideoWrap somehow...it's up to you.

The idea is key. It needs to be something that entertains, or makes people think, and which is related to VideoWrap. The integration of VideoWrap can either be very tight, being the whole point, or it can be quite loose and almost 'throwaway', or maybe just a twist right at the end.

This would, of course, be in addition to submitting a YouTube respnse?
Do feel free to include a link to a high quality version in the YouTube description, that's fine.

As we said in the video, the key here is the idea itself, rather than the technical execution. So if someone has an awesome idea but only has a 15 year old hi8 handycam, they've got just as much chance of winning as someone with an HVX.

Of course, having said that, if there are two entries with equally awesome ideas, then the technically superior one is likely to have the edge.

However, crucially, a technically superior film will not win out over a film that has a superior idea.

Good luck! biggrin

I was thinking to do it in a funny documentary style. It will be funny but it will also include good information. Will that be fine? Cause mine might have some really funny stuff in it so I want to make sure if comedy won't hurt as long as is covers everything

ChristianFilmer: why not try and sweeten the deal with your brother? $1000 can go a long way so why not offer him 10% if he can behave himself for the duration of the filming?

I read about not using copyrighted stuff. What exactly do you mean? Can I show an Ipod? Can I say "Ipod"? Can I talk about King Kong? Can I say Godzilla?

Yep, you can do all of those things. What you couldn't do, for example, would be to show an actual clip from the King Kong movie.

and if you're going to ACT like Godzilla - Don't do such a good job of it that they can't tell it's not really Godzilla! LOL

Did you guys see about the band that sued because the cover of their tune was too good? I can't remember the specifics and I think it was Guitar Hero - but the band licensed the game to remake their song then sued becuase the cover band did too good and sounded too much like the original! LOL

I need to get this clear. Does videowrap has anything to do with making playbacks on You Tube with a higher resolution than what it would have if you didn't use videowrap? I need to get this clear so I know what to put in the script.
