Alright guys. Just wanted to give a little update on whats going on. Cypher and I are finalizing plans now, and we are waiting to run it by Malone tommorow. We have some really cool stuff planned, and I think you guys are going to enjoy this alot, it's all going to be really exciting. We can't release too many things yet, but we need to tell you when this is going on, for you guys to clear your schedules. EDIT: Right now we are currently awaiting the date of of ScopeFest. We will announce it by the end of today. Scope-Entertainment.com
will be generously hosting the contest's movies. There will be a website for you to upload them to and Cypher will provide a tutorial for those needing one. The movies must be at least 1:30 long, and no greater then 2:30, INCLUDING the credits (if any). You will be responsible for compressing the movies, and we'd like them in .mov or divix.avi if at all possible. Also, these files must be zipped. If you don't know how to zip a file, PM Me or Cypher fo help.
Once all the movies are submitted, there will be about a 2 day waiting period to get them all posted and setup. So the week of 21-27 will be our voting period. We will have ballots for you to fill out and send in (either annonymously, or named) . The following week we will post results for each individual category and the overall winner. Hopefully we can get something special for the winner of the competetion
We'll post ballot's in a few days when they are finalized and ready. If you have any questions, or just want to discuss, this will be the thread. If you are interested in joining , please post here and let us know. We hope you all have a great time!

Oh, and Flip forgot to mention, it has to showcase AlamDV effects in it.
But I too hope that you guys have fun.

i don't think it should have to showcase alamdv effects. If you want a LOT of submittions (sp?), you should make it open to ANY film-maker. Plus, It's better when films are natural, and it doesn't look like a scene was just MADE so that a special effect would be incoporated. AlamDV should be optional.
Plus, if you make your outline good with certain stuff, you can make it so that it shows how much easier making this kind of film is with AlamDV2, creating even more revenues than forcing people to buy it to be in the competition.

well, this idea did start about having an alamdv contest didn't it?
and with no alam effects, that would kind of defeat the purpose wouldn't it?
plus, we can always have it later with no alam requirements.
EDIT: oh, and the outline that we have pretty much says that this needs effects. and i sort of structured it that its up to the creativity of the creator whether to use lightsabers, guns, explosions etc.

well, you can make it sorta like a demonstration thing. You can make it an action outline, and so people will realize how much easier and stuff making movies is with alamdv, than without it. This would mean people are gonna buy the software after the contest, which equals = pocket money for schwar

Exactly Av11d. And as Cypher said, the outline almost requires AlamDV. We aren't really telling you how to make it either, it's REALLY open ended, and we should see lots of creativity out of this. If you wanted to turn it into a Star Wars flick , you could. Or maybe a Mafia Movie? You could. I really can't wait to see all the films!

so they may be some room for the star wars lego community
if so i may be tempted to make a little flick - although i can't add sounds to my movies

Does the movie have to be 1:30 minutes or hours long?
O, and i suggest you make people signup before the competition, you wouldn't want to run the thing and have only 3 people participate

1 minute, 30 seconds minimum. 2 mintues, 30 seconds maximum.
ya, flip and i have been discussing how we would find out how many people are going to actual do this.

Post 10 of 67
I am afraid that the entries will wind up being judged heavily on their digital effects and not the actual content of the film. Would a well developed plot and characters beat out the commonplace "awe inspiring" lightsaber explosion battle?
I also think that 2:30 minuits is realy far too short a time to develop anything or make the film interesting beyond the digital effects.
This is my first post to the Alam DV Chat Boards (and though I'm not exactly sure what AlamDV is and certaintly don't know a thing about film editing) I hope it will not be my last!

No, the films are not going to be judged by the FX.
The outline will start off the team, and will take up about 30 seconds. the rest of the time its up to the creativity of the team to fill it up interestingly so that it corresponds to the outline.
And this isnt focused on effects really. It's focused on creativity and how well people can work in a group (and quickly) in a short period of time.
and 2:30 isn't too short if you think about it. The outline we are giving CAN of course be expanded into an hour, but then everyone will have to watch all of these long films, and we are not aiming for that.
Plus, its a bit hard to get a quality 5+ minute video done in less than 3 days.
Oh, and welcome to AlamDV!
Posted: Mon, 1st Jul 2002, 3:21am
Post 12 of 67
Well, scince everyone will probably be using AlamDV, the effects would be alike. Therefore the judgeing would come down to other stuff.
Yea, hopefully it won't be your last

Yeah If I can remember correctly, there is about 8 things for you to vote on on the voting sheet. We should provide a link to that soon, we are just scripting it now.
EDIT: To put it in perspective, only 1/8 of the voting would be on special effects

Also, I'm not sure if I mentioned this clear enough, there will be more then 1 winner. We will have 1 Overall winner, then a winner for each category on the voting sheet. So, lets say we had a place where you voted on Music. Besides the overall winner, we'd have a winner with the best music in his film. See what I mean? So there will be many instances to win. Are any of you planning to throw your hat in ?

so the overall winner, would that be the person who wins in the MOST categories...
say there were 8 categories, and hajiku's vid placed first in 2, av11d's placed 1st in 3 sidewinders 1st in 2 and mine 1st in one, would av11d win overall???

Well the original plan was to average out all the votes into 1 score. Which is probably what will still happen. Because the way we have it setup now, that system just wouldn't work. But I better stop now before i say too much

I can see people meddling in here already with 'their view' of what this should be all about. I suggest that since you came up with the idea you run with it however you like. Just make sure you stick a big JUDGES DECISION IS HIS TO MAKE AND IS FINAL. That way you keep everyone happy. Oh and maybe you could have a peoples choice award also? That too will help get the monkeys off your back.

ALL of the voting will be up to the people
We are currently trying to setup a system to make sure no one can vote twice on the same IP, it should prevent unfair voting (lets hope that doesn't exist
) Hopefully we'll have more then 4 entries. My goal is 10.

I'll certainly have a crack at it...it sounds fun. (presuming I've recovered from my graduation ball, which is just a couple of days beforehand...)
And 2.30 is plenty of time to develop something interesting - there are lots of fantastic short films in the world that are around that length. Most feature films could be quite easily condensed down to five minutes, so it shouldn't be problem.
Check out the film Amelie - it essentially consists of lots of little short films, some of which are about that length long. It's all to do with ideas...

Any chance you can start it on July 18th or 19th (or the 12th)? That would let me be able to work on it over the weekend. I work so it would be very hard for me to do during the weekend. I love the idea and it is a very cool thing you guys are doing and I am not trying to tell you how to run it .... I just want in!

See guys, the problem with moving it is this. ALright, I move it back to the 12th. Well then maybe, 3 other people can't go now. I know I personally have to work on saturday night, cypher works on sunday. Plus, friday night is when people like to go out do things (ie: go to the movies etc). The only reason we are doing it on the weekday is because that is when most people are home on there arse
I'm really disappointed that you can't make it, but I simply cannot change it now.

Don't most people usually work on weekdays, and have free time on week-ends?
Maybe you should do a simple poll in the forum, to see when the most amount of people can do it?
I think the 18th, 19th would be good.

Alright, I'll put a pull up. Its a day event though, so keep that in mind. Look for it on the main post. Unfortunatly, I can't guarentee it on the weekend of the 12th, so please choose something else if you can. If there is an overwhelming demand , then maybe we'll do it then, but It would be really hard to fit into our schedules. Edit: The 17-20 would be VERY possible. The poll with run till tommorow, in which case we will lock down the final date. But for those voting on the '12th' dates , it can't guarantee we can do it.

Hmm . . .sidewinder and i might not be able to! silent hill!
Have any of you guys gotten OFFICIAL sposership from the guys who actually are part of csb-digital?? This is more of an 'unofficial' contest!! I'd feel more compelled to make a movie for this thing if it was official.

Well, Malone has been taking a heavy part in all of this. He's helping us with the vote forms, and the general molding of the contest. So yes, it is official. Maybe Malone will post something here and give his general thoughts on the whole thing
Hopefully we'll have this up in the news section within the next day or two.

This is not
official csb-digital/AlamDV stuff. I think we'd have to go through a lot of legal hassle and planning for that to work. We think its a cool idea and I would like to help out on a personal level. I will be trying to find some time to write a few scripts like Flip mentioned, and maybe help out in other ways if I can. We like it when the users take the initiative and we'll be very interested to see how it turns out.
I wish I had the equipment/skills to compete, perhaps schwar will lay down some phat edits for the csb home boys
Anyway, good luck to everyone, I look forward to seeing your masterpieces

Alright, I see what Mecha means now. I misinterpreted what he meant. I was thinking along the lines of "Does Malone/Schwar agree to all this" or something st00pid.
And I think that'd be really interesting if the csb crew tried to throw their 'stuff' in the mix

FLIP GO ON ICQ!!!!!
Okay, talking it over with malone and schwar, this is an official Scope-Entertainment contest, with the support and help of some of the alamdv crew, ie, malone/schwar and maybe others. This one though, we would like to showcase some alam effects. the next scopefest may be on something completely different, unrelated to alam. but its too early to tell

Impulse Entertainment is in!.....well, hopefully, we will see when the final date is, hopefully not anytime before the 14th cause i am on vacation but the 17-20th is good for me and sounds like its good for the majority of these people! i just hope that the plot outline isnt very complicated cause 2:30 is barely enough time for a good action sequence much less a big story to fit in

Post 41 of 67
Yeah i'm currently at a friends house so I can't completley finalize it, but i'll tell you that there is a 99.9% chance that it will be from the 17-20th. I'm glad more people are starting to sign up! And you don't have to worry about too much plot, we hardly tell you what to do at all. We just give you a basic premise to work off of , and a fun stipulation or two to add to the mix. You shouldn't have any problem at all
More details coming tomorrow!

I voted for the 14th, but I want the 17th!
We can easily fit a 2 minute movie into our filming schedule.
Oh! and make sure the movie can have katanas (swords) in it! I just bought one!http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewItem&item=2115029030

Hmm, I may be able to participate in this... any other details as far as story and what pixel size the movie needs to be?
Posted: Tue, 2nd Jul 2002, 5:00am
Post 45 of 67
hmm, pixel size, haven't thought about that.
when its sent to me to compress on my part, it will be 320x240 (or whatever for widescreen)
i would ike submissions no higher then a 450 x ??? res.
and as far as the story, all I can say now is that you will need a house: interior and exterior (outside) for the filming, so you people will find a filming location.

Post 46 of 67
We're actually getting a pretty great turnout now! I thought it'd be a little lackluster, being it's the first event and all, but things are turning out great! And Sidewinder, if you want your movie to have Katana's in it, then i'm sure you'll figure out a way put them in. The outline is really great, and we should see ALOT of variety and interesting things. Cypher, what line?
And Joe, lets hope if you do submit a film, it won't be so average
And to add on to what Cypher said, the plot doesn't restrict you to any one place. EVERYONE will be able to find a place to shoot.

A house, eh? Well, one piece of advice: Don't create really stupid rules. I mean don't have things where you need to use bananas as guns or something. Don't have any rules that are "Funny." Why? Because they aren't. I don't want to make a comedy. Seriously.

Don't worry Mecha, there will be nothing that dumb.
You don't neccesairly (sp?) HAVE to film everything in a house, I think cypher was just saying that that's basically all you need. Look for my update in a few minutes for more information on what's going to happen.

Alright, I just wanted to post letting you all know the contest will be held from the 17-20th. In case you didn't get a clear understanding on how this will work, let me explain it one more time.
17th (Wednesday) - At midnight on the 17th, I will be posting an outline on the forums. This outline will be the base of your movie and you will have to work off of it. Don't be worried about being restricted, because you are hardly told what to do. Just a few stipulations to make things fun and interesting. Locations also will not be a problem, you could film this in your backyard and still have a great shot at winning, it all depends on your creativity.
18-20th - This three day period will be the time you will have to Plan, Film, Edit, and submit your movie. 3 days isn't alot, so some of you will have to be pulling some overtime, so get the caffeine ready!
Your film must be at least 1 minute and 30 seconds long, with solid movie. So no 30 second video with a minute of credits. Your film can not go past the 2 minute and 30 second mark, INCLUDING credits, if any. If you don't have any extra time, don't worry about including credits, it's not worth it. Once your done, there will be a link that Cypher or I will be posting soon, for you to submit your movie. If your having trouble , there will be a tutorial for you to look off of, and get help. If for some reason you still can't submit your movie, or need help, talk to one of us (Cypher/Me) and we should be able to help you. You MUST submit your film by MIDNIGHT of Saturday the 20th. UKers will get a head start, but have to turn their film in earlier, so things will level out in case you were wondering. You will be responsible for compressing the movies, and we'd like them in .mov or divix.avi if at all possible. Also, these files must be zipped. If you don't know how to zip a file, PM Me or Cypher fo help.
22-28th - This will be the week of voting. There will be a ballot on the ScopeFest page for you to go to. Right now we have the voting rules/process complete, but I'm not sure I'm allowed to completley blow the top on this one, I'd have to talk to Malone/Cypher to make sure, but once I get the OK I'll be sure to post it up. After the voting is done, we will have a page showcasing the winners of each category, and the overall winner. Right now, the winner will recieve 100 force points, and I'm working on maybe getting some ScopeFest T-Shirts for those who want them
If you still have questions, post them up, and I'll answer them the best I can. Goodluck everyone!

Oh and one other thing. Once ScopeFest has been completed, I'd like to combine all of the best little sequences and shots into a little promo video, so it'd be really helpful if those of you who submit a movie, also save the project files and clips, or render a movie in full resolution (640x??) whatever the default standard is. That way I can PM you guys and tell you which clips i would like to have and put them in the promo! Thanks

Okay, VERY important now.
I need everyone who wants to be part of the judging for ScopeFest to email me at email@example.com
with a username and password so that you can be created a one time voting account. Remember though, this account can only be used once. Also, you will not be able to vote for your own videos....why? guess.
So start sending those emails now....and the waves from my f***ed up boating experience today are still riding me....woah...

6 feet 4 inches tall, weighing in at around 220.
Of course, I have no idea how that measures against Sollthar, due to the fact that the metric system totally baffles me (or I just never bothered to figure out how to convert - yeah, definetly one of those)
