i recently used videowrap to compress my brother's basketball game, which is 8 GB large, onto a CD. however, it was compressed into quicktime format and wasn't able to be played. how can i compress it to be in windows format?

There is no such thing as windows format (other than WMV, which is so dire that I will pretend that it does not exist).
The best thing to do is download the quicktime player to play the quicktime files, which is really something everyone on earth should do as it is both very good as well as free.http://www.quicktime.com

I have the latest Quicktime player. But my saved project won't open. It gives an "error-2048:Couldn't open the file Patrick&Keaton-EBall.vlab because it is not a file that QuickTime understands." Also I'd like to ad sound to this file.Also I can't open it with my sound editor.

You can't open a .vlab file in Quicktime. Its a VisionLab project. It will only open with VisionLab. If you want to watch your movie after h=you have added effects, you will want to Render
