Thats one of schwars images although neither of us can spell or construct simple sentences as most people know by now smile . Are we sure it should have an "a" in? If you cut out all the adjectives you get

"AlamDV is a special effects software"

Id normally say that as

"AlamDV is special effects software"

I know "software" is a noun but in the sentence above I imagine it being referred to in the plural, referring to all the parts that go together to make AlamDV.

I think the sentence would be better if it read

"AlamDV is a simple, effective and inexpensive piece of special effects software"

Anyway, I only passed English as a fluke, so I'm probably wrong. I just go with what sounds right in my head...in which case im almost certainly wrong smile

Actually, "AlamDV is simple, effective and inexpensive special effects software" is far more grammatically correct than your alternative, Cypher.

There is nothing wrong with the original statement as it stands. Well, except that it should be AlamDV2. smile

actually, if you didn't have "special effects program" then there wouldn't be anything wrong with the sentence at all.

but since its their, the "a" is needed for the sentence to flow.

And you're still wrong.

You don't need an 'a'. And, in fact, you shouldn't have an 'a'.

Of course it doesn't matter!

But I've just spent 3 years doing a half-English course, I might as well use it.

Although, in actual fact, it does matter, because this is a professional site and shouldn't have grammatical errors.

HEH, What language do you speak?

It is correct - Tarn is totally right. We have made many mistakes before but (probably for the first time) this isn't one of them.

If it is correct in English then it is going to be correct in American as well.

that's true, but alamdv is only one peice of softwar, making it specific. it does make sense without the 'a', but it sounds wrong, and tarn, you SHOULD have the a there.

take out all the fluff and you get - "Alamdv is software" -- sounds good.
"Alamdv is a software" -- sounds bad. Software is plural. Program would be singular. Me loves english.

there should be no "a"...

u don't go into somewhere and go "i would like to buy a software, can u recommend a software to buy" it just sound stupid...

u would say "i would like to buy software" or "I would like to buy some software", in this scenario, "some" wouldn't fit properly, so it is just "alamdv is software" no "alamdv is a software" cos the second one makes no sense...

Hey, Cypher.... just admit you are wrong lol Or have your "English" teacher look at it and diagram it for us, I love it when I hear a Yank (me included) try to debate about "grammer" with people that speak "proper English."

'Tis funny too, that in most Schools in the states we refer to Grammer Classes as "English Class." "Whilst" typing this it occured to me that maybe I should delete this thread. After all there is no mistake crazy

My English is really bad most of the time. I can remember the old AlamDV site with the sections "The AlamDV" and "Plug-in ins". How they didn't get noticed I don't know biggrin

Well most of the early eastern canadians were people that sided with england in the revolutionary war and therefore were kicked out or heckled out...and the free land, or cheap land in canada was screaming their name. so i dont know if the english are quick to lump all north americans together into one steaming pile of yanks smile after all the english hate spain which is basically the offshoot of mexico and latin america...Happy 4th to everyone, although it will only mean something (good) to those who are americans. teehee.

Here is something funny

On July 4th, 1776, George III, king of England, wrote in his diary, "Nothing of importance happened today."

Okay, thats my history lesson for the day. back to work everyone. teehee.

I've got to be honest, when I first read the sentence my first reaction
was the same as yours but re-reading it a couple of times it made
perfect sense.....I really don't know why.

"AlamDV is simple, effective and inexpensive" = grammatically sound

"AlamDV is simple, effective and inexpensive special-effects software" = grammatically unsound

"AlamDV is a simple, effective and inexpensive piece of software" = grammatically sound

"AlamDV is a simple, effective and inexpensive piece of special-effects software" = appears grammatically sound but may be controversial

"AlamDV is a simple, effective and inexpensive special-effects software" = grammatically unsound

"AlamDV is simple, effective and inexpensive special effects software". The direct object in the sentence is "software", which describes AlamDV. If you take out all of the adjectives, (simple, effective, inexpensive, special, effects) you get AlamDV is software. AlamDV IS software, not A software. Of course, I don't really care, but I enjoy showing off what I know! confused

Granted that "software" is the direct object, but to make the sentence work, the noncount noun "software" has to be rendered countable biggrin So Malone was right when he suggested that "a piece of" be affixed to "software" smile

Also, AlamDV is being referred to in this instance as a singular entity with circumscribable boundaries (as opposed to an amorphous entity), so I think the article "a" is actually necessary smile

Shouldn't it be 'AlamDV is a piece of simple....' ?

I don't think either the original one or cypher's correction is right. razz When cypher corrected it the mistake he seems to have made is that his brain inserted the word program on the end as shown in about his third posting.

The one that is used is kind of right but the description is used in the wrong way which is what makes it wrong. Thats why when you take it out it is correct.
