Hi people.

I remember about a year ago joining FXhome and going through the forums, watching them but never saying anything, like a predator planning to strike. biggrin

Anyway one of my favorite threads as an FXhome newbie was the 'Show Us Your Setup' thread by NickD (took me ages to find that thread by the way). Now seeing as Nick isn't around anymore, since his last post was July 07 time, I thought I should revive his thread seeing as it is nearly a year since it's creation and he isn't around to do it. I believe Nick is probably too busy with his Youtube Show. So you could call this 'Show Us Your Setup 2 - Label Harder' or something like that as I am sure setups have changed. I love these threads because I am rather fond of technology and the methodologies and all round geekiness associated with it.

So show us your setup. Mine will be up soon but until then get shooting and labeling. cool

Well, I don't really have a "setup," I use a MacBook and it's "set up" wherever I happen to be at the time.

Here's a picture of my desktop:

the background actually scrolls through a bunch of movie images so it's always changing. Also, there might be a few oddly named files in there.

Are you addicted to King Kong or something?
I don't really got a setup so I can't really post anything.

The background scrolls through pictures of more movies than just King Kong, that just happened to be the one that was on there when I took the picture. Obviously, I do like the movie, but I'm in no way obsessed with it.

Nice setups, everyone.

I can't help but notice, Atom, that the first four icons in your Quick Launch are the same as... the first four icons in MY Quick Launch. You uncreative boob. Get your own order of icons... biggrin

And Tommy Gundersen -- I can't help but ask. I mean, I know Parallels Desktop is way cool and all... but... why are you using a chat program on Windows? I mean, using AdiumX or Fire on Mac OS X would probably yeild a much nicer chatting experience. I mean, if you're going to chat on Windows... at the VERY least, use Trillian or Pidgin...

The thumbnail will, obviously, link you to the full and glorious 1920x1200 version of my desktop (compressed a little, so it isn't 1.7 MB in size). I usually keep my taskbar on "auto-hide," and I have my sidebar on top of all other windows. 1920 horizontal pixels is a LOT of room. smile

And here's my setup. There's lots of zombies here, so you see, I can't be without my AR-15.

Heh, I don't have a setup either. So, like everyone else, I'll just show my desktop:

It is I who took the picture. Contrary to popular belief, toocans are very common in Canada.

Oh, yeah, and click to enlarge the picture.

Actually, in many cases programs in Vista are as fast as they are in XP on the same hardware setup. Unless you were trying to do some serious multitasking on... say... a single-core box with 256 MB of RAM... I uh... I dunno what to tell you.

Also, if you approach Vista with an XP-mentality of doing things, you're bound to get pissed really quickly. You may just as well get used to it -- people who are waiting for Windows 7 as the great savior of the "Vista failure" are just frigging nuts. Windows 7 isn't going to be XP, only cooler -- it's based off of Vista.

The lot of us who took a look at Vista and jumped in and started learning the new OS will hurt a lot less when Windows 7 ships...

Why exactly is Microsoft so hasty to ship another OS? I mean, it will probably have more and better features, but Vista's still just starting to sink in.

BEKKUZ TEHY HAZ TUUU!!!

No, seriously, I don't know. The best thing that Microsoft ever did was had XP incubate for six years. The only thing they could've done BETTER with it, was support it better (add and modernize features over time), like add WPA2 support, exFAT support, native wireless networking, a new explorer, etc.

But seriously. The whole "wait six years" thing, even if it was entirely accidental and due to internal development problems, was what made XP the great, stable, and most importantly, TROUBLESHOOT-ABLE OS that it was. To this day, there isn't an issue as far as being able to type into Google something, and finding a solution for it.

Vista doesn't quite have that, but... it'd be nice if they gave it the time to get that kind of user-generated web 2.0 self-support.

Here's my new setup having moved to college:

Digital

Physical

In pic: MacbookPro, cinema display, 2 decent bose speakers, Sennheiser HD212 headphones, Wacom tablet, printer, iPod, EyeTV.

Love my setup, having the second screen able to face my bed is perfect for watching TV and movies. I feel like I got all of the potential out of what I have and am rather proud of this setup. smile Recently turned the main drawer into just a surface that pulls out for doing any work by hand.

My desktop hasn't really changed a whole lot, but the old image I posted doesn't even work anymore anyway, so here's a new image of how it looks now:

This is one of the many backgrounds that it scrolls through. Most of them came from InterfaceLIFT (which was mentioned earlier in this topic.

Why... the unsmoothed fonts? Please enable ClearType. When I see unsmoothed fonts in 2008, I turn into a wolf, see, and I eat children. You can prevent this by enabling ClearType in your "Display" Control Panel, under the "Appearance" tab. Click "Effects," and then select "ClearType" from the second drop-down menu on the resultant window.

Just sayin'. Wouldn't want to eat a child because of you. biggrin

Ah, it seems this thread has picked up the pace of late without me realising- that is what you get for not watching threads you create.

So after nearly a year after this post's creation, I feel I should finally post my setup with some basic labeling. Here we go:

Apologies Andrew, I was not aware that you were the founder as it was way before my time. Props to you for beginning the legacy of the setup thread. biggrin

So, any additions or updates to setups from the Christmas just past?

I agree Atom. I hate XP since I started using vista, similar to going from windows 2000- XP

I have 3 PCs as well. 2 with vista and one with XP Media center. I love th 2 with vista, but hate win XP. Takes forever to load and lacks many of the features vista has. I also like that vista is a bit sexier than XP could ever be.

Nah. Just curious is all. Is that a dual core processor? wink Quad core seems to be going mainstream and some video editing programs can take advantage of a quad-core proccessor... maybe a future build?

Control Room... Note greenscreen 9'x12' on the wall to the left out in the studio.

Control Room wall with mic-pre's comp/limm's, DAT, ADAT, Mixer etc...

Here is the main studio room the greenscreen is the far right wall (not there when this photo was taken).

Yes, lots of music (over 200 albums/CD'so far) I started recording when I was a kid and it was a hobby until around 1983. I started charging people in 1990 and went full time in 93. I built the studio myself and it took about a year. It's not a get rich business but it pays the bills.

Last year I upgraded to a G5 DP 2.0, 6GB RAM, 1TB internal, 1TB external, ATI Radeon 9600 and dual 20" DVI monitors, I did all the modifications myself (previous life as an electronics tech). Final Cut Pro 5.1.4, VisionLab Studio, ProTools LE Digi002 oh and my newest toy is a Cannon HV30.

Very Nice Setup. I hope to build something along those lines someday... proballey not till I get a new place cause well I'm currently still living with my parents since Im under age... and have to take out certian equipment when I need it and set up instead of having it ready all the time.

Even though the greenscreen wall stays up I still have to remove the lighting because drums will kill my video lights. I have to use drop light/shop bulbs in the overhead lights and even those don't last as long. So for those of you shooting music videos where the drummer is playing don't freak out when your nice video lights die. Drums really put out a vibration that will kill those flourescent 5000K bulbs and at $30.00 a pop I put them away when I do sessions with drums.

Wow, thats crazy. I understand that though... well I finally got a area set up right now for my setup... I just want somewhere to be able to put my greenscreen all the time, oh well, might do that in the other room. Or when I buy my sound board system. Anyway heres a pic

Im working on redoing the walls and flooring... keep in mind this area is part of my room.

If your not playing live why do you need a sound mixer? I work with up to 32 tracks in ProTools with only a mouse and keyboard shortcuts. I have two mixers here that just look cool in the rack I don't use them anymore.

I don't play live to often really. Usually just with friends. But now I'm a back up member of our church worship team, and plus I run help out others who have a difficult time with running there live events that if I had a soundboard to help out it would help them. Interesting though that you do everything with the computer... how much would you sell those soundboards, im not quite in the market right now, but just interested.

I used to have 16 channels of control surface faders for ProTools because I was just so used to using a mixer. After a few months I just stopped using them I can work faster with the mouse. I might get a fader port/transport controller like the Prosonus Fader Port.

The Mackie has channels burned out and I do occasionally use the Yamaha ProMix01 for bringing keyboards into ProTools it is an automated flying fader mixer. But I don't plan on selling them anytime soon.

Thats not a bad setup, I am going to be building my setup a lot this year. Including three new PC's, 1 Laptop, A Custom Built Desktop, and a HP All In One Touch PC.

Plus other little things to tink with and use, like a decent camera and such.

Really? What is giving you issues? Hard ware drivers? Or software compatibility? Try checking out the manufacturer's site for drivers for vista (if you haven't already) and look for the latest designed for vista application upgrades. Vista has a bad rap, due to several things: old hard ware, not meeting minimum or suggested specs, sales people saying it is bad, the list goes on. Vista has only given me one real issue, but I was able to solve that when a newer driver was released for my old latop's video card (since gotten a new laptop). Oh well, if it doesn't work for you, then mabe Windows 7 will. Preorder it now and get 50% off.

I am away from my desktops now, or I would post them too. When i get my new office set up (I am moving remember) I will post those pics too. Should be cool!
