I wonder if it is possible to do this effect in Lab Pro and Fincal Cut Express? (Not the lightsabers, but the slicing in half).

Link, courtesy of Sollthar. There are several tutorials for similar amputation type effects there that could be helpful.

Also, this one from the Tutorials forum here. I'm not sure of the compositing capabilities of Final Cut Express, but it will be much easier to do that with a decent compositing program, which EffectsLab isn't.

I know someone who did something very similar with ELab and Final Cut Pro (not sure on what the limitations for Final Cut Express are either though).

I'm not sure exactly how he did it, but the tutorials Axeman pointed out should give you the basic ideas. And also like he said, it probably would be easier to do with something like CompositeLab (although certainly not impossible without it).
