Worst casting news of the day goes to Jerry Bruckheimer's production of Prince of Persia, which has signed Orlando Bloom to play the eponymous adventurer.

Orlando...Bloom.

Perhaps we're missing something - shouldn't the Prince of Persia be at least vaguely Persian? Maybe we're just not thinking 'high concept' enough. What do you guys think?

I'm just hoping its 125 minutes of Orloondo Bland failing to judge a jump and repeatedly falling onto spikes.

Not true, according to articles I've read where Disney have denied they've cast Bloom. Late April fool's?

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=43769

Thank goodness for that. Although:

Orlando Bloom
(in stilted foreign accent)
I vasn't cazt? Cuzes! Let me just rewind time for me to change thiz

Not that I really care, but who would be a better choice? It would be cool if an actual Turkish or an hispanic actor got the role.

Art Malik!

It would seem that all the world's casting agencies believe him to look like practically every race besides Pakistani, which he quite. clearly. is!

Unfortunately, I imagine most Western casting agencies now consider him to be A Bad Guy, post-True Lies.

Thinking about it, given that the prince goes around slicing up the locals, if they don't cast the lead with at least vaguely accurate ethnicity it could prove to be a bit of a politically charged film to make 300 look positively PC.

Maybe they should just cast Prince.

Really, though, what they ought to go for is an Iranian freerunner/parkour expert, presuming that craze has spread that far. If you cast anybody as the Prince that can't do mad parkoury things, the film will simply default to being crap. This isn't something you can get away with using stunt doubles, wires or CG on.

Shame Tony Jaa isn't Iranian. He basically already has the Prince's powers, with the possible exception of rewinding time.

In fact, maybe they should just rename the series Prince of Thailand?

While this makes me incredibly sad, perhaps the only good news is that now people will see it.

That's some pretty horrible casting unsure

Heh, I like how Will Smith is an option on the poll. If he was in it, it'd just be a montage of Will Smith barely clearing jumps and shouting his very Will Smithy scream, as he does in pretty much all his films wink

Off topic, but moving to news that is actually true... I almost fell out of my chair when I read there is going to be a RoboSapien movie.

Oded Fehr (Mummy, Resident Evil) would get my vote.

I'm not sad at all. I think Bloom is a completely adequate actor that, bearing some makeup and accent training, will fit perfectly. I actually pictured him when playing the game anyway.

Sayid from Lost is bleh. The same "I will talk to you in complete sentences and explain carefully how I will torture you. Do you understand?"-ness I get tired of; correct ethnicity or not.

And Redhawk, don't ever insult his Smithiness again. Otherwise "Ahh....HELL NO!" wink I wouldn't mind him either. He's one of the best actors of our time, you fool.

Robert Downey Jr can be a black man, Ben Kingsley can be Indian, so lets push the boat out and make Eddie Murphy Persian...Oh jeez, I don't think i can even joke about that, now I feel violated.

They should get Sinbad to play the bad guy. You know, because his name is Sinbad.

I laughed when I read that. smile However, you have to cut him slack, it's mostly the writers and directors telling him to play it off like that. And if you saw the episode with Sayid and the cat and some woman (I forgot the details), some of the acting was brilliant. I think he has potential.

He's too buff to be PoP though, in my opinion. I'd vote for no-name Persian actor who can act and has the right build.

Imagine that - an Iranian lead in a Jerry Bruckheimer movie.

Good god, the masses would be confused.

Edit:

Oddly, Jake Gyllenhaal is now rumoured to be in the running. While Jake is a vastly superior actor, he's possibly an even stranger choice for this particular role...

With a prosthetic nose and some makeup, the dark-eyebrowed Gyllenhall might work.

Let's all take a look at Atom's avatar to remind us that, thanks to the miracle of make-up, anything can happen!

Orlando Bloom is a horrid actor anyway, so I hope he doesn't get cast. Then again, making a Prince of Persia movie is a pretty bad idea in the first place.

I'm a bit confused as to why everyone thinks Orlando bloom is such a terrible actor. He's certainly not Oscar-caliber, but he's above average.

I think they should make it a satire and have Kal penn play him.

He's above average, but not by that much. Now that I think about it though, he is perfectly suited to star in a video game movie, which will probably be far, far below average.

I wouldn't say he was above average by much.

Essentially, I tend to consider Bloom in the same category as Arnie. Neither are particularly versatile, but if you match them to the right material (Terminator, Legolas etc) they're superb.

Take them outside of that perfect material (Arnie's 'comedies', Kingdom of Heaven) and it doesn't work so well.

Still, I don't think it helped that Bloom's done so many MASSIVE blockbuster films. Probably not the healthiest way to get started in the business, other than monetarily, of course. It'll be interesting to see what happens if he does some smaller, character-based stuff.

Bloom has star attraction, he could still yet get the role due to the fact Americans love him. And he has been tried and tested with long hair.

I guess that means Farah will be played by Keira Knightley.

And there will be pirate ships in Persia.

see whats happening here?

With Bruckheimer involved, there is a possibility that he might make this a bizarre Pirates spin-off. Same cast, totally different story/character/setting.

In some ways that'd actually be quite a fun experiment, if it wasn't for the fact that I'm not overkeen on the Pirates films.

Sounds similar to my dream of Starship Troopers with the bugs all replaced with sheep.

Or the Emperor's throne room scene in Return of the Jedi, in which Luke's lightsaber, resting on the Emperor's throne, is replaced with a kebab.

"You want....this?"

Looks like the Gyllenhaal rumours were true:
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117986171.html?categoryid=13&cs=1

Gemma Arterton to play the princess? Looks like she's going to be cropping up everywhere... to be fair she was the only good thing in St Trinians.

Shame. While Gyllenhaal's great, and will probably be good in the role, I'd really hoped they'd go for an unknown. The Prince should be a self-defined character, rather than a recognisable actor. Without wanting to go back to Orlando Bloom, the cool thing about Legolas in Lord of the Rings is that he was played (at the time) by a complete unknown, and the role fit him perfectly.

Bah. Similarly, Gemma Arterton??? FFS.

Look, a crack!
