i see a "set poster frame" button beside of the media slider on the right side of the screen. i don't know what it does though, so i am wondering is there a way to export to a picture file with composite lab pro? anyone with any info on this would be well appreciated. thanks in advance.

Sure, you can export stills in either TIFF of PNG formats. Just go into "Render Settings" and change the "Output Container" to "Image Stream." Then move to the frame you wish to use, go back up to the "Render" menu, and select "Render current frame." Then just chose a format, name and location and hit "Save."
Hope that helps!

Don't know if this would be useful to you or not, but you can also export the entire project as an image stream (i.e. - each frame is a separate .png, or whatever you choose, file).
