Anyone interested in a little 3D work?

Hey everyone, i usually don't ask for other people's help...I try and do stuff meself, but I really need someone to help me out with something.
As many of you have come across before and read about that I am making an action short titled RedFruit. I need someone who is able to do 3d animation/rendering to make me a title.
I know exactly how I want it...but i don't have time to learn a 3d app now (with scopefest and all going on)
what i want is a thick red apple, which is just placid...then a bullet is shot (sound fx) and it goes straight through the apple...i want there to be some debris from the apple to be visisble from the bullet enterting/exiting. then, all that's needed is for the whole where the apple got shot to start bleeding.
I already asked KermZ a while ago, and he responded that he can make the apple, but can't animate it.
anyway up for it?

Ick...You asked me about this before and I didn't think I could do it. I sort of have an idea now, and I might try it, but i'll need to learn some particle stuff first. Who knows, wouldn't hurt to try. Or you could always film a REAL apple getting shot and just put some crazy arse filters on it to make it look cool.

Which way do you want the bullet to go, back to front, left to right.
I cant guarantee I can get it done but I will have a go.... Not to sure about the blood though...

i want it to sort of hit...coming from the right of the camera, at ain angle, so the bullet is off to the right.

I can do it for you, but have I got it right... You want an apple... then a bullet to come trough it slowly? what happens with the apple then? does it explode? or just get a hole? And how long should it be? what should the backround color be? And then blood?

ya, the bullet should go through fast...hear an ak47 gunshot from the back.
not explode, just some debris from the whole...and then the whole starts to bleed.

Right I got some WIP pictures done, just so you can see if it's going OK I am putting them into a Yahoo briefcase thingy...
I have some wispy spray to add, and I thought it should sit on some kind of surface so the blood has something to run onto...
Let me know what you think/what you want changing, be as brutal as you want, I will try to get a small video file done tonight aswell...http://uk.photos.yahoo.com/otteypmalamdv

really cool. a few questiong though.
Can you make the apple a little more red? and rounder. like a freshly plucked apple.
the hole is a bit too big as well i think, but i haven't seen the animation, so not sure.

Right, a small video version is up.http://uk.briefcase.yahoo.com/otteypmalamdv
I will test the link as soon as I post this.
What I like, colour and shape of the apple ( I can make it rounder if you want). And the blood.
I dont really like the motion on the debris, so I might try that again later in the week...
Anyway let me know what you want changing...
Well the link doesn't work as Yahoo briefcase files can no longer be shared publicly, so if anyone want to look at the vid email me and I can send you a direct link to the file (this is the only way yahoo lets you share now).

nice, very nice.
can you change a few things?
i need like 2 more seconds before the bullet hits the apple, the blood should be a little slower, and just make the apple darker if possible?
other than that, its what i need!
Posted: Sun, 21st Jul 2002, 6:43pm
Post 22 of 68
Yep the changes sound simple enough...
With the slow blood do you want it to move slowly kind of creeping out of the apple, rather than the gush I have at the moment?
Posted: Sun, 21st Jul 2002, 6:51pm
Post 23 of 68
creeping out sounds good.
more of an unexpected slow thing

New version up, longer intro, slower blood and less of it, and the bullet only appears when it comes out of the apple rather that coming in from behind...

Right it has just finished rendering. The uncompressed version is 539MB
and the compressed one is 70MB
I don't have broadband, so the best method would be for me to burn the 539MB file onto a CD and post it to you.
Whereabouts in the world are you, email me your address and I will send it ASAP....

I'll have another go with DivX, crashed my 'puter first time I tried.
I am in the UK. I will keep trying to get the size down, if I have to I will split it into chunks that you can reassemble...

Crikey... 539 down to just under 2MB with Divx, there are some nasty artifacts on the apple, but I will put it up on the yahoo site so you can check it out, in the meantime I will continue playing with Divx to see if I can get a good balance between size and quality....

that worked nicely, and quality too.
2 things tho if you can change them.
-the blood comes in to early...it looks weird cuz it just appears and you can see the other end of the whole in the back. it moves too quickly aswell.
-and the blood ends off...can you make it keep going for the entire thing?

There are two versions, a Divx and an Indeo, when I do the latest changes I will slap up a small preview in a .Mov format, probably later tonight or tommorow morn...

Post 39 of 68
A new version is up in two formats, an Indeo 5.04 .avi and a sorensen .mov
I have legthened the whole clip, the blood comes out much later, consequently there is less time of the blood just flowing, it is easy enough to add on more frames to the end if you want.
The blood doesn't appear until almost side on, so you can't see it appearing in the hole, it moves slightly slower also.
The only other change was to make the vapour trail last a bit longer so the camera actually moves through it.

hmmm. i think the blood comes in too late this time
can you make it come in at 10 seconds on the timeline of that vid?

under the files section, I have been doing a bit of 3d work for people recently so I set up the yahoo group to share it.
Spread the word, anyone is entitled to put files up here, when I get the new apple render done I will put it up in the relevant folder its easier than emailing large files around the place...

Did you say you did that Apple In Cinema 4D?
Which Version.... How Much?
Im very interested in bullet time, recently I shot a film where a bullet misses someones leg by about an inch and blows up a lamp, but I couldn't make it look any good so i had to scrap it!
If the pictures are as good as the clip, it really will make the film impressive. I can't seem to download the clip from any of the links

The original version of this was created a while ago so most of the files have gone, if you check out the yahoo site again there are two new files up for the Redfruit sequel. I don't know if they are going to be used yet as I don't have any more free time to do what Cypher wants with them.
It's not really a bullet time clip just a very slo-mo sort of thing. It was done in C4D XL 7, I got it for £150 on a restricted student licence from www.hisoft.co.uk
(price depends where you are in the world really) the smoke was done using the Pyrocluster plugin which is about £200, smoke can be done without this though.
The yahoo group is at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/alamdv/
go to the files section and download 1.ZIP and 2.ZIP to see the recent version, obviously they belong to Cypher...

Cinema 4d is very easy to use, everything is right there infront of you. You can download demos and tutorials from www.maxoncomputer.com
the newest version is 8 but I think they still have others up there.

ok i got the demo and the tutorials but i dont have much time at the moment. Is it simple to create a cube and blow it up? if yes how? Thanks
Posted: Sun, 26th Jan 2003, 10:55pm
Post 60 of 68
The following applies to version 7, I assume version 8 is fairly similar...
In the main menu click
A cube appears in the main window, in the object list on the right double clicking the cube will let you change the size or add a fillet...you need to change the segments, start with 10 for all three boxes
To blow up the cube click
A bunch of circles should appear, click and hold the explosionFX in the object list and drop it on top of the cube, a + symbol will appear by the cube click on it and the ExplosionFX will appear as the cubes subobject.
Double click the icon a menu with loads of options appears, goto Cluster. Set the Cluster Type to Automatic, tick the preview box below and drag the slider, you might want to lower the gravity setting.
To get the effect to animate properly you will need to set some keyframes, I won't go into detail here. Click OK on the ExplosionFX options.
At the bottom of the screen is a slider, click and drag the blue box to 10 frames, double click on the ExplosionFX again set the preview slider to 0%, click OK and then double click the Round record button to the right of the play controls at the bottom of the screen.
Drag the blue time slider to about 70 open ExplosionFX again and set the preview to 100% click ok and double click the record button. You should be able to press play and see your cube disintegrate.
There are a huge number of other options on the ExplosionFX such as rotation, zero gravity, you can also do bullet time if you learn how to do more complicated keyframing.
I will stick a few examples in the Yahoo group.
1. Simple cube as described above
2. Added rotation and randomness
3. Using keyframes to pause the motion, basically be setting two keyframes with the same value of preview slider

Thanks so much...
Everything is working great, but I can't seem to find the camera position settings..
I really appreciate the time you spent typing that out, or copying it.

Post 62 of 68
I typed that one, normally I'm rubbish at tutorials but I had C4D running and just wrote down what I did.
It's best to use the target camera as you can keyrame the exact point it needs to look at without messing about with rotation.
Once you have created the camera you need to switch the perspective view to use it On the menu with Edit Cameras Display and view click
Then select one from the list, the view should then show what the camera is looking at.
Cameras can be animated the same as anything else checkout the Timeline window where you can manually adjust any of the keyframed settings that you have created...

Post 63 of 68
i've had total sucess, but I can't get the camera to point where i want.
what im trying to do is have a shot of a cube, then it blows up. BUT, as its blowing up the camera does a swift movement in bullet time.
It is very easy to do, but i cant control the cameras propaly.
Posted: Mon, 27th Jan 2003, 10:23pm
Post 64 of 68
If you have created a target camera their should be a target point as a seperate object in the list on the right of the screen.
You can create keyframes for the target point and the camera will always look at it.
Alternatively you can make the camera point at any object
on the object list select a non target camera then right click on it a new menu should appear
New Expression-Target Expression
A window will appear where you can type the name of the object that the camera will point to, unfortunately you can't change where the camera looks using this method it will always point directly at the object...
I will slap up another demo file so check out the yahoo group,
your best option is to look at www.maxoncomputer.com
they have a huge tutorial section which will show you all the basics, I spent a year in C4D before I was doing anything half decent...

thanks, i have learnt pretty much all i wanted to know. I only wish the demo let you export files
A Small request.... is it possible if you could spend no more than 5 minutes. Making a video of a flat cube smashing into a million peices.
So the camera is looking face on at the cube.
I want to combine this with Animation master bullet footage and see what it looks like if a bullet hits it straight on.... then i might decide to buy the software.
