I can't believe no one's talking about this here, so here we go!

Monday night, I stayed up late to drive to my local game shop for the midnight release of GTA4. After standing in line for about 30 minutes, I got in the store, and walked out with a shiny new game box and a stupid grin on my face. Got it home and was only able to play for about a half hour before I had to get to sleep, but I was impressed.

The next day, after I took care of some business around town, I came home and spent about three hours playing, and I have to say, I haven't had that much fun playing a video game in YEARS. The first time I got drunk and drove in the game I was laughing hysterically, the neighbors must have thought I was nuts.

Now, while I haven't spent that long playing at this point (maybe 7 hours total) and haven't gotten too deep into the story yet, I can't really give a proper review or anything, but I can say that if you have a PS3 or Xbox360, you should probably play it. Rent it, buy it, steal it (don't steal it), do whatever, but this is seriously a phenomenal game, and leagues beyond any other open world type game. I wouldn't call it perfect, but it gets pretty close.

The graphics are obviously not as flashy and "WOW THAT LOOKS LIKE THAT FINAL FANTASY MOVIE" as a lot of current-gen games, but there have been a lot of times that I've lost myself in what's going on because the animation and sound are so realistic. People in the game react realistically, their animations smooth as silk thanks to the Euphoria physics, which garners some stunning results. The first time I gunned someone down, I felt bad, and was somewhat shocked by how brutal it was. The screaming and gunfire echoing off buildings combined with realistic animations really puts you into the experience. Previous worlds in the genre have never felt this real, and going on a killing spree in the early morning on a quiet street in Liberty City is a breathtaking experience, as twisted as that sounds.

It's also enormous. I haven't unlocked the entire city yet, but even in the "small" area you have to play around in to start with, there's loads of stuff to see and do, and shoot and blow up. You can see practically the entire city from certain places, and it's AWESOME.

At risk of repeating myself again and again, and sounding like a raving fanboy, I'm going to stop talking about it and just post some review links, if anyone still needs someone to convince them to spend the 60 clams on this masterpiece. It's seriously worth it, but don't take my word for it!

IGN Review 10/10 (If it means anything, this is one of the only games IGN has ever given a perfect score...)

Gamespot Review 10/10 (Also a perfect score? It's a trend!)

Anyway, enough from me. Who else has played this thing? Let's get an FXHome GTA4 Multiplayer tourney going!

I want this game sooooo badly! Unfortuatley I won't be able to get my xbox back until the end of May (long story). If I had my xbox now, it would be a pain to get my hands on it since I'm not seventeen yet. I will be at the end of the month though!

But this game looks like a massive improvement over the previous games. They fixed broken mechanics so well (aiming/cover system) and added in so much more (physics, really good story, unique personalities for the pedestrians, and so on)

Must... Get... Game...

Same for me. And I'm too unco with game controllers.

Mouse & Keyboard FTK!

It better come out on PC. If R* don't release it for PC, they will be cutting heaps of shelf life off the game as heaps of people made mods for Vice City and San Andreas and I don't see why they wouldn't for IV too.

It's really fun so far. The gameplay itself is really good, but to be honest, I'm really into the story. Seriously, the opening is what really grabbed me.

Yeah, the story is by far the best part of the game. And the credits roll at the start of the game is amazing (reminds me somewhat of the one in "Lucky Number Slevin")

Agreed, the beginning is pure awesome, especially with the cool music. I'm about 7 hours into the game as well, and it still feels like I'm just beginning. This is going to be GOTY for sure.

This game looks awesome! I haven't purchased it yet, maybe this weekend if I can find it, I hear many places are sold out. Not sure if that's true though.

I found a video that shows some cheat codes (health, wanted level, weapons, etc.), if you're interested in watching, the link is below. If not, no clicky biggrin

Yep Aculag, I did the same thing. Gamestop was PACKED for the midnight opening. When Mass Effect and Rockband were released on the same night didn't even come close to half the people that were there last mon ha. This game is pure badassnessisity (Yep).

FXhome gang anyone?

BTW, to those who have it, what system do you have it for?? I'm on 360 and my gamertag is egul i

I got the day off today and I'll be on most all day ha. I've been doing but multiplayer thus far because it really hits you hard when you first realize that you are running around in Liberty City with 15 other people ha. Cops is Robbers is fun and funny as hell.

BTW Mentos - Hurry up and get your damn system back haha. Killings not that same anymore sir ha.

Mine's Aculag. Easy! 360 version 4 lyfe!

Waser, I agree, the story is excellent. It wouldn't be as great if it weren't for the amazing voice acting, though. They really made sure that this game is going to grab people from the get go. I can't wait to see what happens.

I listened to the IGN GTAIV review podcast and the story sounds soo awesome. I recommend everyone here who has the game to listen to it because they talk about a lot of things that you may not know about the game.

While I'm totally down for that, I'm even more interested in playing a Free Mode game where we form a posse and just go around causing as much damage as possible.

i havent played too much of it, but from what i have played, ive noticed it is WAY harder than previous gta games. not only the driving, but when you run from the cops it is way easier to be killed. for instance i was running from the police and i got shot through my passenger side window in the head and died. ridiculous. i also like how when you break into cars n stuff you do it a bunch of different ways depending on where your coming from. i thought the hand fighting in it kinda sucked though sad i dont know if you can train to get better at it, but when i played it it wasnt all that good

I was playing with a friend the other day, and we made a giant structure out of cars, managing not to blow up a single one, and then we threw ourselves from the top and watched as our euphoria engine-powered bodies tumbled down. Fun.

Also, we had some fun trying to find out who could hurl himself the farthest from jumping out of a speeding car... I ended up winning when my character hit some sort of rail and flew nearly halfway across the river. smile

If you guys want a really excellent way to commit suicide in this game, drop a grenade and then just stand on top of it. It's amazing.

Also, if people are having trouble with driving, remember to ease on the gas and brake instead of slam them. The cars react more realistically, so slamming on the brakes when you turn is going to lock the wheels and you'll just slide into a wall instead of turning. Just ease on them triggers. Awww yeah. Drive slow, homie.

Just wondering why you decided to go with the PS3 version over the 360 version? 360 has the big plus of DLC in the future, which will be awesome. Does the PS3 version have any perks?

PS3 version runs in 640p x0 AA instead of 720p x2 AA, requires a hard drive installation (which leads to slightly faster loading and a bit less pop-in), and will miss out on two of the DLC episodes (there's more than 2). It also has no achievements, and no Live-like friend system. Otherwise, it's identical.

Good question, I'm starting to wonder that myself now. Guess just watching the IGN review and a couple others wasn't enough info. But I have to say, I only bought a 360 because it came out so much sooner than the PS3 and I wanted a next gen system BAD.

Well I can tell you that it does have achievements, and through these achievments you earn things like cars, guns and what not. Also, the friend system is there. It may be different that the 360, I don't know, but it has a sims like friend system. Meaning you have to spend time with them, do activities with them, etc. Or else you get the "thumbs down" icon showing you that you are losing your friend.

I have no idea about the DLC episodes, so I can't comment on that. I didn't know about the display of 640p before I bought it, so that was news to me.

Not at all, you misunderstand what I mean. This game did the opposite of failed miserably. But what I'm saying is AT FIRST the style of the play is like Saints Row. Being that the world is opened up like never before. Maybe it's the graphics or whatever, I don't know, but it's like GTA Liberty City, then San Andreas, then Saints Row, then GTA4 you know? Hopefully that made sense, at least in the linear sense of progression as far as graphics goes.

If you are saying that Saints Row sucked, then I disagree. It was a good game, not great by any strech of the imagination, but good. Anyway, that's all getting a bit off topic.

I see what you're saying. I only played Saints Row because I wanted a next-gen open world game, but I expected it to be a lot better than it was. I got sick of it after a short time. I guess it just seems weird to say this game plays like Saints Row, since to me it plays like Grand Theft Auto, just with better everything. Saints Row played like Grand Theft Auto on crutches.

I will probably get this for PS3 instead of 360.
First of all so I can play online with my older brother (it will be the first ps3 game we both have razz ), second of all because I don't think of GTA as a xbox game. I tried it on xbox and it felt wrong. I'm going to miss 360's awesome online feautures for this game though unsure

Oh no I was talking about the 360's features, as in, Xbox 360 achievements, and the Xbox Live Friends List (which currently works better than the PSN).

I hope you respect me even though I only have 1972 Gamerscore. Which means 19,72 cm...

Might I suggest skipping one GPU upgrade and buying a 280$ console instead? The few games you miss are made up by the 10 games you don't miss/have to wait for. razz
PS3s are around $650 ($608 USD) and Xbox 360s are $540 (about $505 USD)

That and I'm too unco for consoles... I don't mind waiting either.

Have a read of this if your PS3 version is locking up.

Also, give this a look at (PS3 and Xbox users, this applies to both).

I don't own a X-Box 360 or a PS3. I do own a mate who owns a X-Box360 however. After much prodding and suggestion he agreed to head down to Blockbusters and stand in the queue at midnight on monday. I arrived at his house the following day with great expectations. Was I over hyped with all the advertisments and internet chatter that had acumulated over the past few months? Would I be crying in utter destress at the poorly made and put together game, that should have been the game of the year? Well my friends only one word can answer.. you know what is already you clever people!

Of course the only answer it can be, for a game made by Rockstar, and game that has had over 3 years of the best planning and programming pumping into it by big burely men, to the sound of drums keeping them in time. The answer is of course 'no '. I can't say it louder, no really I want to shout it to the world, but I can't... I'm still in awe of this game.

Graphically it is much better than previous GTA games, but still gritty enough. They have resisted the trend of making all things shiney ( *shudders at the memory of Oblivions Sheep ). The city looks the part, and so it should having been modelled on the real thing. They even set up loads of cameras throughout the city to capture sun rises and sets to make the game more realistic! Did it make a difference? Yes, yes it did, very much so. Depending on the weather ( more on that in a bit ) and time of day of course, the lighting is very different, but it's not just a difference of gets lighter at dawn and darker at dusk. The colour themes change too, sometimes the colours are so muted you get a bleach bypass effect, other times the hues are really strong. It's not untill someone else is playing GTA IV that you have the time to relax and actually take the time to appreciate the sites that are normally wizzing past.

As it it modelled on a real city, you get the feeling of completeness, that everything just works. Often in previous games, as you drove along the roads weren't quite right or the buildings were slightly something you couldn't put your finger on. Here, we don't have that at all. All the buildings from the small street vendors to the largest, tallest skyscrapers are spot on.. just wait till you're flying over the city in a heli-chopter for the first time, you won't want to land for a while. It is while flying you really get to appreciate the severe lack of pop-up. You can see almost the entire game while flying about. buildings are in the distance, cars are below you. Although they seem to have fixed the pop-up of cars, buildings and other such things, there is still some in the details of the various stuff about Liberty City, but as you're driving by you don't notice at all. Only one time was my mate practically flying down a road did he crash into an invisible subway entrance, which then appeared as if by magic. As you'd expect the various islands looks and feel different too, but not so much as previous games. Here as you move from one to the other it's only during a quite moments respite do you get the chance to appraise whats around you. The changes are subtly done, and work well.

The weather has been massively improved too. However as with all the improvements it's not obvious until you take a time out from the game. The fog is beautifully done, as thunder storms which light up the city with lightning. The rain actually bounces on the roads as it comes in downpours.

The audio is as you would expect, with the radio stations giving you that truly Rockstar element. Yes, you're favourite voice of the radio is still with you in this version of GTA too. A nice feature is while you are listening to your fav station and a song you like is playing, you can whip out your mobile phone and dial a number - they'll text you the name of the song! Listen to the cars radio as you dial too.. they small touches of the interference is again a wonderful inclusion. The mobile phone is your friend here, you can call your mates and business partners, arrange jobs or dates or just to go out and get drunk which is itself something to see. Never in any game have I had the experience of being drunk so brilliantly displayed in this way. They manage you make you have very little control without making you feel as if you have no control, just like being drunk. A side note for all the Daily Mail readers out there, who are are no doubt up in arms about all this drunk driving encouragement. No. That's right just No. You can choose to drink, and you can choose to drink drive, but the game does not make you. No siree, you have a choice you see. You can hail a cab. Possibly one of the greatest time savers ever, usfull and realistic, you whistle for a cab, and it has dice in the mirror? What out for those subtle comments from your character and others around you.. Fresh Prince does get a nod. If you do choose to drive, drunk or not, you'll love and hate the new GPS Sat Nav. It's brilliant, it makes you want to use it all the time but the voice is soo grindingly annoying you hate it.

The thing that makes you know you have something special, isn't the graphics or the sound or anything like that. It's the small things that they taken from other GTA's and reduced down then polished. It's the subtle touches to things that you only notice after the 10th or 100th time you experience it and go " Oh *" ( *-insert favourite word here) For me, it was within half an hour of playing, on a moped, trying to jump a gap in a bridge, being decapitated by the other side and my body flying through the air, as my head and bike fell to the depths below. Ten minutes later as I was running away from the police, by driving down a cliff and along the beach, I heard the screams of theose same police officers falling down the cliffs. One, two.. three.. each cry slightly different and more terror filled than the last. Yes the voices of those doomed policemen actually sounded scared. For a moment I felt a pang of guilt and remorse. By then of course I was back on the streets and happily shunting cabs and cars out of my way before heading to an under pass to make my last stand, before my stolen ambulance blew up.

I've never been so happy in my gaming life. Well, not until a few hours later, when in a bus.. but that my friends is another tale.

Just wanted to throw this out there:

GTA IV - Great Experience, finely polished and a lot of fun. Yes. Game of the year? No.

This is the same formula we've been playing for the last 10 years, with actually less features than the previous incarnation. Whilst I do feel that sacrificing this for a better storyline and balance is worthwhile. It doesn't change the fact that this is the same game it always has been.

Game of the Year awards should go to the games to pioneer the genre, do stuff we've never seen before and open up avenues for which the industry as a whole starts to explore. So whilst I'd give GTA IV a solid 9.5/10, I really don't feel it's a game that should have its praises sung too heavily. It undoubtedly will though due the mainstream audience it appeals to as well as gamers.

Coolest aspect of GTA IV is the multiplayer, Co-operative/large scale free roaming multiplayer is enough to make a relatively mediocre experience enjoyable (I'm looking at you Crackdown, Saints Row). Though there are a couple of issues with how some of the achievements are dished out I think they'll be sorted sooner or later.

-Matt

p.s. - Klut, just so you're aware. last I checked there were some big problems with the PS3 Multiplayer. As in it didn't work at all and the central server for it was taken down. Perhaps this is fixed now.

Just got it and loved it. Although I'm engaged, I can't help but feel a little bored at how large-scale the campaign is that I end up just randomly shooting pedestrians and stealing cars (which is tons of fun and kind of the point) just to pass the time.

The story is interesting, the graphics are good enough, the atmosphere is damn near perfect. A great and incredibly addictive game. But I agree, not the game of the year.

Gears of War was a game of the year. So was Call of Duty 4 (which I sadly prefer both in story and gameplay, even though they are so different) But GTA 4 is still way up there. Tons of stuff is going and it's an absolute hell of a lotta fun to roam around.

A good 9/10.

I've only had time to play it for about 20 minutes at lunchtime in the office - so hardly ideal playing conditions - but I've got a few thoughts:

1. The framerate is seriously wobbly.

2. The cars feel bouncy, and not in a good way.

3. It's basically exactly the same game as the previous ones. Obviously this might change as I see some of the nuances, but I was surprised that it didn't feel more 'different'.

4. It's very pretty. As with the previous GTAs, it might not have the same visual detail and polish as smaller, more linear games, but the overal scale of the thing more than makes up for it. It's why San Andreas STILL looks awesome, despite being clearly very dated and low detail. But when it all comes together....in other words, the visuals are very much more than the sum of their parts, and always have been.

5. Having a specific 'cinematic camera' button is cool. smile

6. Explosions are nice.

7. Physics on car-pedestrian collisions are disappointing and don't seem like an advance on stuff we've seen before. Especially when they slide over the non-existent roof of an open-top convertible.

8. The mobile phone is extremely realistic: it's every bit as irritating as REAL mobile phones!!

Anyway, as I don't have a PS3 or 360 at home I'll be waiting patiently for the PC version, which should hopefully fix the framerate problems and feature sexy mouse movement/aiming.

I've played every GTA version and I do expect a few things from it.

I have played it for about 4 hours (XBox360) and enjoy it.

To reiterate what Tarn had mentioned, some of the cars do feel very "floaty" but I got use to it after awhile. Kinda reminds me of the first Driver game on the PS2, but it is kind of annoying.

The explosions are a leap from previous installments and was presently surprised when I saw my first car blow up.

There are some framerate issues that happen here and there, but the world is very vast and huge.

I love running people over this time around.

Tarn - The technical advancements with pedestrians aren't that obvious if you ram full-on into somene, but try nudging them, or bumping them around. Then you'll see.
