FXhome Film Project 2008 announced!

Post 1 of 65
FXhome is making a short film. A proper short film, with a story and characters, amazing visuals, thrilling action and great music. And the best bit is that we want your help!
The big idea
Producing a film has been on our ‘to-do’ list for the past six years. This year everything is in the right place – the FXhome.com community has grown to a formidable size, packed full of talent, while the company now includes a talented producer capable of overseeing a project of this complexity. You guys make films all the time; it’s time to see if we’ve got what it takes.
We don’t want to go it alone, however, so ‘collaboration’ is key. The idea is to combine the best elements of the FXhome.com community and related networks to create a high quality and exciting film that everyone can watch with pride.A word from exec producer Joshua 'schwar' Davies
Adobe Flash is required to play this embedded movie. Get Flash now!
What’s it all about?
No doubt you would like to know more about the film itself! We’ll be announcing the crew next week (although if you read between the lines you might already be able to guess the director) but here’s a quick breakdown of the project:Title:
To be decided!Genre:
Sci-fi dramaRunning time:
10 minutesShooting dates:
5-day shoot in June-July 2008 (dates to be confirmed)Synopsis:
On the bleak and unforgiving surface of a distant world a fragile mining base stands isolated, relentlessly battered by brutal storms. Its small crew have known loneliness, love and betrayal in their time there, and in such a claustrophobic environment secrets can’t stay hidden forever.
How to get involved
There will be lots of opportunities to get involved in the production, from important crew roles to concept art and poster designs, so there will hopefully be something for everyone to try. We’ll have more details about how you can get involved in a couple of weeks, so keep an eye on the FXhome.com news page
In the meantime, feel free to discuss the project and ask us questions in the new FXhome Film Project forum
. We’ve also set up a special topic where you can go to find quick links to all the latest information – check it out here
You’ll notice that posting in the Film Project forum is a little different to the rest of the forum, in that it has ‘terms & conditions’ that you agree to by clicking ‘submit’. Please make sure you have a read of the T&Cs
before posting.NEXT WEEK:
Find out about the crew behind the FXhome Film Project, and how you can get involved!Concept artwork by Allan Douglas Parker.

1. This is awesome. You know many of us always wanted to see the AlamDV3 movie that was used in tutorials, and now this is...well, suffice is to say a HUGE improvement on anything we could've hoped from you guys. Can't wait to see the finished project.
2. I want to be involved in this movie, however possible. Any Photoshopping logo/poster/avatar creation or whatever, I can do. If it's in later months I would like to see about joining up to see some of the production happen. Again, if possible.

This is an excellent idea, getting a whole community involved in a film can only be a good thing. I think you're on to a winning concept here!

I would love to actually act in this movie (if there are any parts that requires a teenager.) I'm a good actor and I even think I can speak fairly british if I need to. I would have no problem to pay for the trip either. (All depends on the date though)
But if you don't want me for that I could do some composing. I do have the keyboard and composing skill to do something futuristic.

I will also be involved if I can, sounds awesome. This is something I've always imagined, like Rawree's project with the mechs, etc. This will be different obviously, but same concept of community contribution to a film of epic proportions. I have access to a lot of cool resources through my dad, etc. Once more info is released I'll definitely try to contribute.

I've offered a lot of things in the last year or so towards any potential production and those offers still stand. Hopefully one of you guys will be in touch
I also hope it'll film before mid-July as I might be off on a feature for a few months. I'd so want to work on the Fxhome film though.

JediMaster567: Ok so, thats 10 minutes, each of 60 seconds, each of 29 frames (plus probably 3 times as much footage that ends up on the cutting room floor). Thats a possible bear minimum of 17400 frames that could need rotascoping. And thats just the visuals. Since you don't seem daunted by that, perhaps you could do all the compositing for us!

Well, if there's a fight scene of some sort, I am an excellent choreographer with all kinds of weapons, and I could easily upload the scene, upon which you could have your own actors imitate the scene. I'd need the skill of the characters (say, a veteran verses a private, for example), the weapons used, the outcome and any other relevant details you'd like to include. This would be my top priority!

I remember discussing this ages ago. Glad to see it's finally taking shape.
That being said, I'm available for any nude scene body-doubling necessary. If needed, I can also perform my uncanny Patrick Bateman impression for any scenes requiring it.

Thanks for all the support and offers to help out, guys! We're really excited to see how this project progresses. As it's the first time we've done anything like this there might be a few bumps along the road, as we're slightly finding our way as we go. But it should be an exciting ride!
ben3308 wrote:1. This is awesome. You know many of us always wanted to see the AlamDV3 movie that was used in tutorials, and now this is...well, suffice is to say a HUGE improvement on anything we could've hoped from you guys. Can't wait to see the finished project.
Same here! We really hope it all goes according to plan, so that we can do this on a semi-regular basis. One film a year, or something like that. But one thing at a time.
The T&Cs are at the bottom of the 'new post' page to make sure people see it before posting anything up. It's important to have it there, as people arrive at the forum in different ways, and any other location and it might be missed by people.
Nobody likes legal stuff, but we felt it was important to have the T&Cs, so that everybody knows where they stand. We know you guys and you know us, so we know there isn't going to be anybody trying to do a dodgy deal anywhere, but when you're dealing with this kind of project it's important to have everything clear and up front.
If you have any specific questions about the T&Cs, please direct them towards the T&C topic
so that it's all kept in one place. Thanks!
mandalorian wrote:I'd be happy to do some roto work and compositing if you have any openings for that. Just let me know.
Fantastic! Post-production is definitely where we're going to need the most 'hands on deck', as we're expecting it to be quite intense.
Quite a lot of pre-production has already been completed in-house, as we wanted to make sure we had a firm grounding before announcing anything to the community. This was primarily due to this being the first film project we've attempted - presuming this goes well, future ones will most likely involve the community right from the start.
Due to this 'head start' there's two areas we won't be needing assistance on: scripting and acting. Sorry to anybody that wanted to get involved on the writing or thesping!
JediMaster567 wrote:not to be negative but how is all of us (lot's of fx users) going to work on a 10 min. clip?
It's unlikely that everybody
will be able to make a direct contribution to the film, you're right. However, everyone should have the opportunity to do so, whether it's simply through throwing ideas around, or doing a piece of concept art, a logo design, some 3D modelling, compositing...etc.
Some contributions will be indirect, via open discussions and polls on the forum. Other contributions will be direct submitted material.
So, yes, unfortunately it's unlikely that everyone will be able to make their mark. But there will be lots of opportunities. It's also important to remember that, if this goes well, it will hopefully be the first of many, so there should always be a 'next time'.
Bryce007 wrote:That being said, I'm available for any nude scene body-doubling necessary.
Not sure that'll be needed this time round, but if you'd like to just step through here I've got this other project.......

That really depends on the final quality of the film, but should it turn out as we hope then we'd want to push it 'all the way'.

I'd be keen in being the main offline and online editor and colourist or the film.
Also if someone can let me know what equipment you might need or are hiring in, I have a range of professional sound equipment, grip equipment etc including a Satchler 18 ft crane with REMO remote tilt and pan controls, also know a Steadicam owner and op that would be interested in donating his rig and time to the cause.
Let me know so I can try and sort things out
Whose the producer of this thing that I should contact?

Do you think i could use this as 'work experience' for my Uni application? I really need some form of work experience, paid or unpaid, for my Uni application(s).
Rather than sit behind a desk, i'd love to help out on set. Not sure what i could do since i'm used to somewhat smaller productions, but i'd sure love to help.
My only concern would be that i'd have to live in a Travel Inn for a week while we filmed it...and not being able to drive would present it's own problems....

New FXhome team member Lucy
is line producing the film. We've set up a specific gmail address for contacting us about the film - email@example.com
. We'll have more details on crew roles we need to fill later this week.
JediMaster567 wrote:does fx have a list or something on the site that holds what jobs and stuff needs to be done?
We'll be running a proper crew call later this week, at which point we'll outline the exact roles we need to fill. We'll also introduce the current crew.
AvengingEagle wrote:Do you think i could use this as 'work experience' for my Uni application? I really need some form of work experience, paid or unpaid, for my Uni application(s).
You certainly could. One aim of the film is to hopefully create something that people can proudly display on their CVs/showreels. So if you contribute notably to the film, it's definitely something you could class as work experience.
RevolutionProductions wrote:Will there be a place where all us people go and work on the film
The shoot will take place in Norwich, UK. We're currently finalising studio space so that we can start building the set (we'll have more in that in the coming weeks!).
TubeTape wrote:Let us know if you need anything and we will donate it to help out.
Thanks also to everyone that has offered their skills already, we're really excited that so many people are interested in working on the film. Later this week we'll put up an article and video interviews with the existing crew, and full details of the remaining crew roles.
In the meantime, if you've got any questions, fire away!

If you want to keep posting in the same topic before anyones replied then please use the "edit" button in your post as it will allow you to edit you post instead of cluttering the topic with some nine year old going on about a movie.
Anyway on another note, looking forward to seeing this getting underway. Hopefully I'll be able to help out with VFX, Compositing and coloring but if not then good luck to the ones who are chosen, all will be known in a few news posts time

Pretty much sums up me too... Being literally on the west coast or the US, and 12 hours hours apart from England, can't say I could help much... Anyway, if all goes well, I'll be busy with my own films.

While there are a few on-set positions that we still need to fill (we'll have more details going up either today or tomorrow), most of the community involvement is likely to be in post, at which point it doesn't matter where you're based.
