Casting & auditions

Actors are a funny breed, constantly opening themselves to all kinds of abuse at the hands of cruel casting agents and dictatorial directors. They waive most employment rights that the rest of us take for granted (when choosing an actor you’re almost forced to discriminate based on age and appearance!) and even if they’re a master of their craft they could still come unstuck simply for having the wrong kind of voice.

Casting for the FXhome Film Project began five weeks ago with the roles advertised on Casting Call Pro, StarNow, To Be Seen, Mandy and Talent Circle. Though the shoot itself isn’t until the start of July, it was nevertheless essential to cast the film early so that costumes could be fitted to the chosen actors and schedules arranged.

Despite it being an expenses-only production, we soon had over three hundred applicants. Director Ashley Wing analysed CVs, headshots and occasional showreels, whittling them down to a more manageable 30 who were then invited to audition.

This is when you find out just how serious the candidates are, especially for unpaid and low budget work. Some you never hear from again, others don’t show up on the day and a few have second thoughts once they actually bother to read the production details properly. It’s a long and frustrating process but entirely necessary – casting can make or break any film.

Auditions were held over a weekend in Norwich at the end of May, with Ashley flying up from Devon. Last minute cancellations caused some consternation but, thankfully, the actors that did show up proved to be just what we wanted.

As such, we’re very happy to introduce the FXhome Film Project cast:

Julian Boote – Captain Michael Shepherd
Kate Madison – Engineer Rachel Turner
Russell Turner – Technician Cameron Mayhew

All three actors showed a real enthusiasm for the genre and an intelligent understanding of the story and characters. We can’t wait to work with them on the set!

Watch a video diary of the audition weekend!

Many thanks to the FXhome Film Project artists, whose work can be seen in this video.

Heath Ledger? Nah...

Other than that, I enjoyed watching this and I can see that you have plucked up some talent for the Film, and makes me ever more anticipate the final outcome. Seriously good stuff! I look forward to this!

biggrin

Yeah, while Russell's a great guy and a great choice for the role, I have to say I didn't see the Ledger resemblance either. smile

However, all three of the girls (Lucy, Elly, Ashley) seemed pretty convinced.

We're all getting pretty excited here! Getting actors in place is a massive step, as you can finally put faces to the dialogue in the script.

Can't wait to get on the set with this cast and crew!

I guess this will all go in 'The Making Of' ? (If you are going to include one of these...)

Seriously, good luck!

The depends on the finished quality of the film itself. Presuming it turns out as we all hope, the sky's the limit, really. We hope to push it to festivals and contests as much as possible, and at some point I'm sure there'll be a DVD/blu-ray packed with behind-the-scenes material (the online video diaries are only a small glimpse of the full picture!).

Everyday here sees more stuff arriving, from set elements to lights to camera stuff. Big thanks to our friends at Tubetape for sending some awesome equipment over in double-quick time!

Excellent, well done.
I've made a few distributor contacts and might have more by the time you finish your film, if there's anyway I can help by introducing you to them i'll be more than happy to do so. (it has to be a feature for them to be interested)

Wishing you all the best and I'm loving all the little bits your putting online, so don't stop, i want to see every little detail.

Cool, thanks for the offer! Networking is always the key, after all. smile

However, it's only a 10 minute short so almost certainly won't interest normal distributors. In fact, it'll probably end up being a feature length making-of documentary with a 10 minute film extra. wink

I imagine we'll just distribute it ourselves, though.

Thanks! We've got more of these video diaries planned, should have at least one more before the shoot that'll focus on the set.

So are you guys paying your main three actors? I know you said something about that in the post, but it was a little unclear.
