How do you make artificial headlights on a vehicle using day for night shooting?

You mask the shape you want the headlights to form and grade that area to make it lighter.

I seem to recall seeing a tutorial around here somewhere showing exactly how they did this in that one shot from "Between the Lines". Anyone know where to find that?
