"A portal" is pretty darn vague. Any sort of doorway is a portal. I'm assuming you are after something more out of the ordinary than a door, but some sort of guide to the direction you are heading would be handy. Could you provide come concept art, a sketch or something, to give at least a vague idea of what you are after?

Also, I'm assuming that none of the myriad of portal effects available as presets or AlamDV plug-ins will work for you, since you are requesting something else. Can you provide some guidance also as to what it is about some of these that renders them unsuitable? Then we may be able to offer some guidance to get you in the right direction.

sorry I cant give concept art but I can describe it pretty easily

(portal description)a tall unique shape with slight displacement and the texture is similar to the Stargate portal. The angle is from straight on. I already have the portal.

I really need to know how to make the portal (described above) ripple around my actor when he walks through it. And then (as the portal ripples,) my actor fades into it (like the Stargate portal)

thanks

There is an FX preset called portal but it's for vision lab. I would try to use a bunch of grade objects and the gleam filter.

You'll probably want to film your actor against a greenscreen, then use an animated mask to gradually remove him from the shot as he goes 'through' the portal.

I already have it so he disappears kind of like your tutorial Tarn but I need the portal to ripple. like casting a stone in water.

Probably the easiest way to do this, funnily enough, would be to actually film a stone causing ripples on water, filmed from above. Then use a displacement map to composite that footage onto the portal. This should make the portal appear to 'ripple'.
