Okay, so, say i want to apply the thermal heat preset to a person walking

do i do a freehand mask and trace them frame by frame? And how do i get just the person to be thermal? and the background normal? and can i set a duration for a mask?

thanks

You could do a freehand mask frame by frame, but it is much easier to film the person in front of a greenscreen. Then, after keying out the greenscreen, apply the thermal preset to the layer of the person.

If you really want to do it with a mask (which will be a nightmare), You will have to duplicate your footage, so you can mask out everything but the person on the top layer, and the background will still be able to be seen on the bottom layer. You can't set a duration for a mask per se, but you can move it out of frame for all the frames wherer you don't need it.
