Okay, so I want to do an effect to where my daughter holds a ball, and then it becomes a "flame ball"-- basically, just is on fire

I am not going to have her move at all, her hand or ball, for the ease of the effect....

So, i know i need to mask the ball with a circle, and then put the background footage of fire behind the mask, right?

But do i need to do this in front of a green screen? Especially if the ball won't be moving?

Thanks-- just wanting to do it the best i can

You won't necessarily need a greenscreen, no.

You will actually add the fire layer over the top of the footage, then add a mask to the fire layer in the shape of the ball.

Then, you may want to create a small particle fire over the top of that, because if the flames are completely contained within the ball, it'll likely look weird.
