value key help

well i'm not sure at all on how to use this. Is this another word for luma key? I tried using value you key for the tutorial on lightning's reflections and that didn't work out well. I also tried doing it on explosions and i'm coming out with grainy results.

Could someone, if possible, show me how to get, say for example, a good quality GroundExplosion_5? composited?

Select the layer on the timeline, and in the Inspector, change the composite mode from "Normal" to "Add."

yea, but that effect is highly unrealistic. I'm talking about getting rid of that horrible transparency.
