Just wondering if anyone here has made a bullet hit effect for an action movie? I want to film something and make it look like a bullet hole just suddenly "appears" on the actor. Has anyone tried this? I've been trying and don't know what to do. I tried masking but can't figure out how to make the hole suddenly "appear" later in the footage or how to animate it.

well if you want to see through the guy you can tape him doing watever and then get a shot of the backround and try not to move the camera alot depending on the size of the holeand then of the backround and then just mask where ever u want the hole to be

Whether the hit is on exposed skin or under clothing will make a huge difference for how this effect is pulled off. Of course, the pros use make-up and squibs, but trying home-made squibs is a very very bad idea. Cutting to the actor's reaction at the time of impact is an often-used and quite effective trick.

Not sure where exactly you were running into issues with the masking/animating technique, but perhaps you will find these helpful.
