I was wondering which of Ryan Wieber's lightsaber battles do you think is best:

Ryan vs. Dorkman http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NE5elL30w4
Ryan vs. Dorman 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-is63goeBgc
Ryan vs. Brandon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kq4Ej9KpQhg
Alternate lightsaber duel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LoAVKNXR-Q

You have until 12/10/08. all these polls will be sent to Ryan.

For those Ryan Wieber fans Ryan is releasing Ryan vs. Brandon 2

You'd think Ryan would catch a hint after the uber-hyped and then completely-forgotten-and-never-talked-about-again RVD2, as well as the ailing Star Wars franchise itself.

For those interested, RVB2 has already been released, the unrotoed version anyway. It was an entry into LCC VI.

http://www.sabercomp.com/Entries.html

It's entry 10.

They're planning to have a bunch of people on TFN do the lightsabers, but it's still way cool without them. And if it were on the poll, it would be my vote as favorite.

I just watched it, and wow, they can do some really amazing things... it's just too bad that they waste their talent on doing action scenes completely centered around a concept they didn't create. They could make some great films if they wanted to, and they could use their choreography skills in them too, they could just use swords and not lightsabers.

But alas, they choose to do more lightsaber duels... crazy

That video gets yet another big 'meh'. Practically the same 'kling-klang' choreography (shot-for-shot, even) as all their other videos in practically the same location with obvious copyrighted music (Iron Man soundtrack) and obvious copyrighted root material. (Star Wars, dur!)

Passsssss.

Very true. Perhaps they could make some better things if they complemented the skills that they do have with some creativity rather than just shooting Star Wars fan films... er, fan duels, actually.

I'm honestly just waiting for them to throw a little bit of story, and maybe some actual grading in there.

I'm fine with them doing fight scenes, let's just give the scenario a bit more credence, as with Shoot 'Em Up, and make it make at least the littlest bit of sense.

Ryan Vs. Brandon's cinematography is quite a letdown. The choreography is good enough, but they really need to shoot it better, and maybe make the punches and kicks stronger looking.

I didn't realise that force.net was still doing the lightsaber contests. Since the main Star Wars movies ended I've kinda dropped out of the whole Star Wars fan machine.

It's cool that people are still having fun making these things, but I don't think I can really be bothered to download another Random Person X vs Random Person Y film.

Movie Kid 4, are you sure you're not RyanW pretending to be someone else to jazz up interest in your film? wink

Ryan's choice of movies do not surprise me bearing in mind his influences. Remember, we still have another 4 "Ryan vs Dorkman" movies and another 2 of these Brandon ones (whoever the hell Brandon is) to neatly follow his idol's trajectory.

I'm surprised there have been no lightsaber duels in Heroes yet

Well Ryan vs. Brandon was not really supposed to be anything special. It was just a quick video. RVB2 is going to be a lot beter. Evan the previews show adrenalin pumping action evan without the blades added.

Where? What gushing? I don't see any gushing in this thread.. As far as I know, RVD and RVD2 are all but forgotten, and yet the high amount of criticism seems to remain. I'm not a big OMG RVD LOLERz I CNT BELV ITs!1!! kind of guy, but the point of the thread is to vote for your favorite (if you have one) duel, not to go on about how uncreative he is for sticking to lightsaber films.

I liked RVD1, and then he made RVB. Then they took RVD2 to the next level with a nice budget. It was an impressive technical achievement, and it was a brilliant idea to promote themselves. I still didn't like RVD2 because its intentions weren't just for a fun choreography contest and it didn't have the same personality that the first short did. I figured they'd call it quits after that. I mean, if I was making bank doing visual effects for a company, I'd want to create some completely original material on the side that isn't necessarily effects heavy. That's just me though, I'm sure they have a great time doing this.

However, if you look at this from their perspective, all these duels are genius. The first one got big, and now he is just getting his name out there (look where that got him). Good stuff, and I certainly don't think less of Ryan or any others who work on this with him and would never consider insulting them for this. If it were me, I might be doing the same thing, as a career decision.

That's not going to stop me from not wanting more of these duels for the same reasons as many here.

Mmm, they are good choreography and effects, and my own antipathy isn't personal either, I'm just sick of Star Wars and the seeming unending amount of stuff released to do with it. It it's not another box set or merchandising opportunity, it's amazingly talented people wasting their efforts on making a fanfilm to a series that I frankly don't believe deserves it anymore.

If you look at the story itself, Empire Strikes Back is great but the rest are insubstantial to me. I was thinking a few months back that the cartoon Avatar The Last Airbender has many of the same themes but it does it with more substance, no kidding.

I have respect for RyanW and also Dorkman, I remember Dorkman coming to Fxhome and posting here, kudos for that.

So in answer to the voting issue, I'm not going to vote because the option for me isn't there - I don't care.

Well, I don't think anyone is really insulting Ryan himself (or at least not many people are). I think we're all just kind of wondering why he continues to make fan film fight scenes rather than more original stuff, and more so why he's still managed to retain a sort of cult following. Again though, there really hasn't been anything bad said about Ryan as a person.

Oh, I know, I never really accused anyone of it, just stating it in case it looked like I was even remotely looking down on what he was doing. I just happen to not be remotely interested in what he's doing anymore. It's been done. Too much.

None. I don't like Ryans movies, never did. They're among the most overhyped things on the internet. Where's that answer in your poll?

I would actually answer the poll if it had a suitable answer like "I entirely don't care" or "Star Wars sucks balls".

the first one is no longer available on You Tube.

I voted foir RvD2 - the interaction w/ the environment was real nice, i.e. kicking up the sparks w/ the tip of the lightsaber or slicing though the ladder.

Though, Ryan v Brandon did answer the tactic of switching off the lightsaber mid-duel. lol.

but all-in-all the tempo and duel-itself was more interesting in RVD2 in my thoughts.

Yeah... can I cast two votes for both of those options? Movie Kid should really add those to his poll.
Too late!

I hate it when people don't like something and they think that it is worthless. Some people like Star Wars, and I'm not really sure what your doing with Vision Lab and a Yoda Avater if you don't like Star Wars! Boom!
Umm... I love Star Wars. Just ask anyone here. smile What I don't like is Star Wars fanfilms.

Please, jawayjohnny. You went apesh!t over Clone Wars, don't act like you're so non-nerdy now that you're above liking fanfilms. smile

That bit made me laugh, seeing as you obviously have no idea what Visionlab is.

Seriously, I hate fanfilms. With the exception of TROOPS, they just aren't very good. I think filmmakers should spend their time and resources making something original. And if they're just nerds who want to make a fanfilm, then it will probably be visually lacking.

And I don't like everything Star Wars. The new book series, Legacy of the Force, is garbage-masher material. smile

I'm not really sure what your doing with Vision Lab
Me neither. I bought it, realised I don't like Star Wars or anything Star Wars related much and... well... just stood there. Thinking to myself "Damn, why did you buy this?". Then I stood a bit longer, thinking to myself "There's entirely nothing you could do with VisionLab other then Star Wars...". Then I cried a bit, put it away and cried some more.

But I'm better now. I can already eat solid food again.

Heh, despite VisionLab's ability to key, mask, clone, grade and composite; yeah, it's utter shite. biggrin

Star Wars is a religion, or have you forgotten?

Ha, I agree. This topic needs to be locked.

No, not really. And certainly none of the "big" fan(s) here care about fanfilms. The majority here think Star Wars is dead, and/or George Lucas sucks. Just thought you should know that before you unknowingly make a fool of yourself. wink

Well, you have one. I'm also gonna jump out on a ledge here and also suggest that simply posting other peoples movies is not a great way to get one.

Lets not crucify someone just because they like star wars.

We all thought making our own lightsabers was the coolest thing since sliced bread, admit it, we were all there once.

This isn't about making our own lightsaber/SW movies though, ssjohn. It isn't even about lightsaber fights or, I dunno, Star Wars fanfilms- it's specifically about Ryan Weiber's movies.

An entire thread has been dedicated specifically to giving praise to a single person making Star Wars fanfilms- and not by that person, either. And then, even once it was ignored, the thread creator has insisted everyone vote and talk about the fanfilm-creator and his movies. Granted, I think Ryan W would be flattered, but.......come on.

To me, that fits under 'embarrassingly ridiculous fandom'. It's not name-calling, it's pretty much the truth. smile

Atom, I totally agree that all these threads are dumb, but is it really necessary to insult them, they are just trying to talk about things that they enjoy, enjoyed, had fun making, looking forward to, kind of things that are cool to them, but we don't enjoy to hear about, but we don't have to insult them about it, or laugh at them, we can just ask them to stop. This isn't the place to have Star Wars debates, or talk about Ryan Vs. Dorkman, where they should take it to fanfilm websites. (hint hint.) But maybe we can just leave these types of threads to the people who enjoy them? We don't need to comment just because we don't like what these people are talking about. Just, stay out of their way, and they will stay out of ours. Hopefully.

Rant over. Converse amongst yourselves.

Bolbi, look at every single post in this thread NOT made by Movie Kid 4.

They are all talking about the pointless/ridiculousness of it all. smile
