Game: Left 4 Dead

System: PC

Game Type: Versus

Time (GMT): 8.00pm

Date: 07/02/09 (Next Saturday)

Player Limit: Eight

Plan:
Now obviously plans don’t always go well, especially our little gaming nights we have attempted in the past. This is mainly due to a number of reasons, 1) People outside the UK don’t have the game 2) People outside the UK who do have the game end up facing a time zone problems and 3) Server trouble.

Now while there’s no battling the timezone problem because the answers simple…stay awake everyone! Get unbusy! biggrin The servers will not be a problem! L4D is able to run on a dedicated server or run from your own PC without you having to worry about anything! smile

So, eight players, four humans, four undead, one night, ALL the maps (if we haven’t gotten fed up and tired.
Remember to make sure your connected to the fxhome steam group so we can all have a banter before surviving.

Players: 7/8

1] B3N
2] Tarn
3] Erfa
4] er-no
5] Sollthar
6] Schwar
7] Kid
8]

I need to get L4D for 360, heard great things about it. Let's set up a 360 Live match at some point.

My son got this for the 360 for his birthday on Monday. It is already one of my all time favourite games! Split screen on our widescreen tv is good but we need to get wifi for the 360 so we can play online (then we need another 360 and another big tv so I can play full screen too!). Very intense when things get hectic.

We played yesterday with the "director's commentary" option on - well worth a listen if you haven't tried it, some fascinating insights in to game development (my son wants to be a games programmer so it was great for him).

If you love zombies and survival horror buy this now!

Yeah, Valve's commentaries are brilliant. If your son doesn't already have it, I highly recommend Valve's 'The Orange Box' Aside from containing amazing games, most of them have commentaries as well which are really quite fascinating.

Another game worth getting for the commentary is Chronicles of Riddick, although I believe the commentary is only available on the PC version (maybe they'll change this for the remake?).

I'll be glad to host Schwar, if I can get a good dedicated server then that's great! If not I'll host locally, seeing as the router is a N1 nimo or something, quite fast but I'd expect maybe a slight jitters.

Hosting locally for an 8 player match almost certainly isn't going to work.

Using dedicated servers should work, and has worked nicely for a couple of months. Until yesterday, that is, when I tried to get a game going with some friends and the game failed to find even a single suitable server.

Internet gaming is always easier said than done. razz

Some more TF2 would be fun at some point, too.

I'm currently investigating renting a server we can use for the FXhome game. That way we won't have to worry about finding a place we can all pile into.

I'm really thinking about getting it for both pc and my 360. (I just got the new macbook pro and I've heard great things about how L4D runs on the machine - With a windows converter of course).

I'd consider myself a gamer and I still have yet to play L4D... I feel ashamed... (It's on my top 3 games to play asap list)

You haven't played it yet? Shocking.

I think schwar plays it on his Mac laptop without any probs at all - even runs it on max settings.

I'll keep y'all posted on the server front...

I run it on my Macbook Pro, bought a year ago (so not the revision from October or November) using Bootcamp. It runs at highest quality settings across the board and there is no slow down whatsoever.

I'd go Bootcamp or nothing though, because an emulation will probably be slow and $hitty looking.

Yeah, he runs it in Windows. Doing anything else would be, and I quote, "ridiculous". smile

Need to make sure it's a decent Mac with a decent GPU, of course.

As Evman says, Bootcamp is the way forward - emulation isn't worth considering for games.

We are lucky enough to have the new Unibody MacBook Pro which has rather beefier graphics than old MacBooks. While I wouldn't be quite as enthusiastic as Evman about the performance, you can run L4D rather well. Most settings are near their highest levels while at a decent resolution. I've even run it over HDMI to my HDTV at 720p where it performed even better as the resolution was lower.

I've also run it on a top-end iMac 24" and it goes quite well but a mid-spec PC with a $100 graphics card will do a better job. At least with the latest MacBook Pro Apple are beginning to put decent GPUs in their machines!

L4D isn't a very intensive game graphically so most machines will be able to run it at some level, even the majority of Macs with Bootcamp.

Indeed. And bear in mind that as it's a Valve game, it scales fairly well. Even if you have to run it on low settings it'll still look decent and you won't miss out on any gameplay stuff. Running it on max everything isn't as crucial as it is with, say, something like Crysis.

Hey guys, bad news unsure It looks as if I won't be able to join you later this evening gaming due to my Mac's Windows installation on Boot Camp not wanting to run for some reason.

It worked like a charm yesterday, but when I tried to start it just an hour ago it wouldn't boot into Vista. Anyone got any tips on what could be wrong? Hope you guys have a great night gaming, wish I was able to be there smile Hopefully we'll be able to get together another round of Left4Dead in the very near future though biggrin

So consider my spot open if anyone wants to join instead - I edited B3N's original post to reflect this.

Just finished, having gone through 2 entire Versus maps in 2 and three quarter hours.

Pretty exhausting, but utterly brilliant!

Me, Sollthar, Er-No and Erfa made a pretty amazing escape from the hospital rooftop. Well, Sollthar and Er-no did, anyway. I tripped up on a brick and fell over.

Schwar, Tarn, er-no and someone else being harrased in a corridoor.

Hehe, the guys ran into the safehouse, and the guy whos moaning about points was left behind because he kept wandering away from the group. smile

I believe this is Schwar covered in lovely vomit.

Schwar and I await our prey from the rooftops.

Kis just about to pounce er-no I think.

Was a fun night indeed, I got huntered so, so many times it must have been a record. Great fun last night! And thanks for the server Tarn!

Shall be setting another one up sometime!
