“Aidan 5” the film we did for the 48 Hour film project, took THIRD PLACE (Best Picture) at the final 48 hour fimapolooza (combined with the Miami International Film Festival) in Miami this weekend! The top films at the festival were from Tel Aviv, London UK, Paris France, Los Angeles…and Columbus Ohio! (combining the awards from the Miami International Film Festival and the 48Hour competition) Final Judges were from top name industry companies like Dreamworks-

http://www.48hourfilm.com/

We are SO PROUD to have been selected to represent Columbus on an INTERNATIONAL stage with Aidan 5…and then to be selected in the TOP THREE “Best Picture” category is just beyond comprehension- Our director, John Jackson is just completely in SHOCK right now, and to have Columbus mentioned among those large, international cities was good representation for ALL of us local creative folks. He said the quality of the films exhibited was AMAZING- and Ben Bays-director of "The Horseman" (who went with Johnny down to Miami) said that they were better than anything he had ever seen at the LA international film festival when he lived out there…which made having Aidan 5 selected by the judges to be in the top three even more exciting. They both said that the encouragement they got from teams from around the globe was great, and that their biggest support came from the team that won New Mexico who were blown away by the innovative approach to Aidan 5, he said they cheered them on when they were announced. They also got an opportunity to attend workshops and seminars with industry folks from places like HBO and others on how to sell and market your film into existing pipelines, etc...

I would like to take this opportunity to announce that AIDAN 5 is being developed into an online web series, comic, and interactive experience- The new AIDAN5 website promoting the web series has been launched at www.aidan5.com

Stay tuned.

Thanks guys. As an update, I did a "media blitz" sending out the promotional photo and a press release to several papers in Ohio (Dayton, Cleveland, Cinci, and here in Columbus) as well as smaller film oriented sites and radio shows. The Columbus Dispatch (our paper here in Columbus) actually called me and interviewed me for a story in this Sunday's paper. I'll post a link when the story is online. This made me think about something for the community here- would anyone like to see the press release I sent out to see proper format etc? How can I post that besides just as text?

Please continue to check the aidan5.com website often- it is already being updated as we speak and should be cooler in a few days.

Sounds like something that could be useful - you could upload it as a PDF to make sure the formatting is retained. Depending on what software you're using you could also upload it as a Word and/or Open Office document, as that should cover most people.

Interesting. Very cool little movie and nice drawing style...will the web series develop the world? I'm interested in where you take the story - it's clear cut in the short so seems hard to know where to take it and go beyond the concept too.

Yes Mel, thanks. We have been debating quite a bit among the creative team on how to either a.use the short as a starting point. OR b. make a clean break with the new pieces.

Between John and Tim Baldwin (the creators) myself and Ben Bays- We have a fully developed 3-season story arc at this point. Each "season" is 12-15 episodes long. The world of Aidan 5 has a complex political/industrial structure and we have lots and lots of interesting side stories that could be developed off of these ideas. Writer Vidas Barzdukas has joined the team to help develop scripts based on the complex story arc outline. The Aidan 5 website will soon have a prodution blog and we have various plans in the works to flesh out the content online besides the episodes including (all tentative at this point) a forum, an interactive "map" of the city where Aidan 5 takes place so people can "explore the world of Aidan 5" and perhaps an ongoing online comic book of sorts. Ben Bays is currently shopping for corporate sponsorship as well and is selling ad space on the site. There site as of today is just a holder page with some wonderful music by composer Rob Johnson (Rob is part of our team) but a more interesting site is already being developed and should be launched later this weekend.

I'll post a link to the story in this Sunday's paper (if that bit goes online) As of right now we have three Emmy Award winners involved with the Aidan project (Ben, John, and composer Mike Jackson) and we are looking to use the site and project to market ourselves, Room 101, and Columbus as a creative center in the Midwest. Check back to Aidan5.com regularly...and stay tuned.

A thousand times congrats, Bryan! That is really spectacular!

Now I just wish I could see the movie again, haha. The YouTube link is down and everything else has been removed. For the competition I'm certain, right?

Still........if you've got a link rolling around there somewhere.....

I also like the site and webseries idea- the short film concept you guys went for; and the way you did it- it seems like it would translate well into a short-format mini-ish series. Maybe (AIDAN) five episodes per season? biggrin Cool site, by the way. Very simple, obviously, but perfectly effective and cool. Music is terrific; who's it by?

Oh, and you're right about the winning. It's kinda humorous to look at the list of winners and awards and see 'Tel Aviv, Paris, Paris, Tel Aviv, Tel Aviv, Columbus, Paris, etc.'. I was looking at the page to see the dates for Dallas and stumbled upon that- pretty funny to look at, you're right. Congrats once more for getting the (relatively) small-town-America into the international competition!

Thanks Atom-

The highest quality is at http://vimeo.com/1654623 on Ben Brown's (artist/animator) Vimeo site.

You can also see it at www.48.tv

and on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mHTEulRKhw

THe Aidan5.com site is also now hot, with a bit of FLASH and a great music piece from composer Rob Johnson (part of our team here)

I'll post a link to the article in SUnday's paper if it goes on line as well.
Cheers!

You big tease.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull premiered at Cannes, you know. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

NOw that puts things into perspective doesn't it Captain Bringdown? biggrin

The truth is that a couple of films are being selected from the International 48Hour film project to screen at Cannes...they have a short list... but it isn't official yet.

Actually our producer Ben Bays (with whom I worked on The Horseman) produced the film "Driftwood" that went to Cannes- so it isn't unheard of in our neck of the woods. Columbus actually isn't that small...it's the 15th largest city in the USA, bigger than places like Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Nashville, St. Louis, Seattle, etc...

Well, depending when you go I might see you there (unless North West Vision have messed up the submission, of course). Just waiting for my badge to get sorted out.

EDIT: Nope, we're there! Saw Aidan 5 on the film list too.

Congratualtions!!1 That is awesome! Unfortunately, I do NOT have a pass- our director (John Jackson) does though, and he will be the one representing us at Cannes. If you get a chance, introduce yourself and tell him Bryan Michael Block sent ya!

P.S> where can I see your film?

I'm still waiting for the director to sort out my pass - he gets 2 but he'll be in Romania so I should get one. Is your director heading over for the whole festival?

As for where to see it, it's still finishing off the rounds, so unless you're planning to get to Mid-Ulster International Film Festival or End Of The Pier International film Festival it'll probably be a while before it's online. We still haven't even sorted a trailer yet (pretty bad, it was finished almost a year ago) but it's on our to-do list. Some of it's on my showreel though, and I'm uploading that soon...
