In my group of mates only 2 out of 20 are left handed - one including myself - looking at this survey Ive got a few questions.

Why are there more right handed then left handed people?

why is the modern world mainly set to that default?

and are there any alternatives to right handed stuff e.g. a left handed keyboard or writing?

I think you forgot to put a smiley at the end of your post Pooky, otherwise you are coming across as a bit rude wink

CD - to answer your question right handers have always been more numerous than left handers, I'm not entirely sure if there is a logical explanation as to why that is the case (genes aside)

But going back many many years, being left handed was often thought of as a sign of evil. Going back less far, my Dad was originally left handed but when he went to school they "corrected" what they considered to be a "fault" and forced him to write with his right hand. That's why he is ambidextrous today, because the school made him write with his right hand.

That was common practice amongst many schools in England around that time, no idea if American schools had a similar policy.

Left handed keyboards as far as I'm aware don't exist, as keyboard usage requires both hands.

Hey - just checked wiki, as with everything take this with a pinch of salt but makes for interesting reading...

Sorry i forgot to put in that most of the common keys (I can't remember the percentage) are placed on the left hand side so that people could use the right handed mouse as well.

Wow, never knew that! Makes sense now that you mention it.

Weirdly enough, despite being completely left handed, I use the mouse with my right hand... no idea why unsure

I'm left-handed, but I tend to think I was right-handed and just mimicked/want to be like my brother who was left-handed, because I hold my writing utensil in my left hand kind of oddly and have fairly equal dexterity with writing and many other things, like sports, with my right hand.

I've concluded I'm likely ambidextrous.

If you are talking about the keyboard, thats not true, the QWERTY keyboard was invented long before the mouse ever was, and it was designed for the typewriter so the ink would not jam some of the most used letters together.

That is weird now that you guys mentioned it.
I surf, and skate Goofy footed, right foot at front of board.
Tennis and golf I use my left hand.
Writting, drawing, or painting, yup right hand.
Would you count instruments?
I play guitar with my left hand on the fret board and pick and strumm with my right.
Drums are another matter because you use both arms and legs.

Dextrous / Sinister, see how the world view supports us Righties?

Latin dexteritas, from dexter 'on the right'.
From Latin sinister (“‘left hand’”) via Old French Sinistra (“‘left’”), Middle English Sinistre (“‘unlucky’”)

Hhmmm I wonder why right is also a synonym for good (as the opposite of evil) or correct in a few (maybe a lot) languages.

I am old enough to remember everyone trying to make me right handed, mainly my Father who had some old notion that it was wrong. In the middle east it is bad to be left handed because they wipe (butt) with the left hand. In that culture is is considered dirty to eat with the hand that you wipe with. So I do most things right hand except write and eat but I wipe with my right hand HA! Also it has been shown that lefty's have higher IQ's and are more creative... left brain right brain stuff.

I don't know if this is true but apparently an English king (George the somethingth) was left handed.

However the bills were only made legal if they were written and signed by the right hand so he was forced to write with his right hand.

But because of some brainal imbalance he began to stutter.

So apparently if you write with your less dominant hand, awkward symtpoms begin to appear.

Well, I'm a righty from eyes to toes, but above that I'm a lefty. Not much good at math, but fairly creative. Well...

You ask why most are righties. Well, the majority of the world's people are also white. That's just how it happens. Maybe it's so we can shake hands. Maybe it's so we all wipe with pretty much the same hand. I use my left...ahem.

Okay...that was badly worded. It's not quite what I meant. Forget it. Just...pretend I never said it.

It's just the way we're made. How about, most people like ice cream. Is that a better metaphor?

No, because you still can't definitively say it's true. wink But we understand what you mean.

Being right or left handed is all about genes and dominance. If I remember correctly from biology, being right handed is the dominant trait, just like a noncleft chin is. Left handedness is like red hair - it only expresses itself if there is not a dominant gene present (you must have both genes from your parents that dictate red hair only, otherwise you won't get it).

Of course, I took Biology 3 years ago, so I could be mistaken, but I think that's the general explanation.

I remember I wanted to be a lefty some time ago, but now I realize what a pain in the ass it would be. I'm just fine being a righty. Although, with computers and typing becoming more and more common place, I doubt it'll matter that much any more, in terms of actually writing.

You do realize mice and even keyboards are made for right-handed people, right, Evman? The 10-key pad is on the right side, as is the enter key. A mouse is used by the right hand, contoured to the shape of it. A laptop mousepad is left-justified, to give your right hand more room to lay on it and use the buttons.

It's all a pain in the ass, even things you don't think about. Scissors, for instance, are terrible. Bathrooms, toilet paper is always on the right side. Little things right-handed people don't even begin to notice.

And as far as I know hand-dominance isn't a trait in the same vein as hair color, it's much more complicated and related to brain-use.

That's why I clarified with "in terms of actually writing." razz

And no, I'm fairly certain hand dominance is a (relatively) simple matter of gene dominance. For some reason I remember that specifically from biology, but again, I could be mistaken. If anything, I think hair color is far more complicated than hand dominance. A better example would be cleft chin vs noncleft chin, or widows peak vs. no widow's peak.

Yeah, it's based on dominance, but it's more intricate a process than hair or recessive traits like cleft chin or widow's peak because the aspects of handedness cannot be pulled down to a simple Punnett square.

It has to do with dominance in some cases; but that's affected invariably by development in the womb and a host of other factors. Premature children, etc, are more likely to depend upon a different side of the brain when born; and that results in a left-handed dominance.

You think French people (in a country smaller than my state), English people, Germans, and Asians are all white?

And worse, you group a country with a continent? A continent of Asians. Surely that makes it fairly obvious the world isn't white-dominant as far as population density.

Christ, I hope you're kidding or so inconceivably dumb you can't make an impact. India, perchance? The fastest-growing population density in the world by a large margin. Are those people white?
