It has finally happened. The YouYube superstar has 1,000,000 subscribers. This is a record for YouTube (and probably the rest of the internet). If you haven't seen his channel here it is. One factor in this success is the fact that Fred appeared on the Nick TV show iCarly Now you tell me, does he deserve the 1,000,000 subscribers, or does some one else.

What in the name of holy Jamoses is that? I think he's perfected the art of being unimaginably annoying. Is that the point?

The bigger question is:

Who the f*ck cares?

Fred is one of the most idiotic things I've yet to see. The fact that YouTube shuts down people who dis him or make spoof channels of his just plays into the whole shittty low-level hierarchy of skewed YouTube culture and makes it even worse. That or the fact that he actually has branded merchandise in Hot Topic and other mall stores. F*cking ridiculous if you ask me.

But, alas, it's YouTube. It's a community of good-for-nothing, trash-talking, self-congratulating mud turtles. The reason we say 'this isn't youtube' to troublemakers on here.

Honestly. I really don't think he is the funniest on YouTube. It is an origional idea, but I think Smosh deserves to be back in first place.

Okay, I'm not a subscriber but I've seen a few of Fred's videos and I thought they were funny. Maybe not the best entertainment on YouTube, but I don't know why people have such a problem with him and his success. Though I guess for some reason I've always imagined that most of his subscribers were pre-teen girls.

But I'll second the vote for Smosh. (Most of the time, anyway -- they've had a few vids that were kind of lame...)

Interestingly, I only recently found out about Fred and and his immense fame.

Unfortunately, I watched a few clips of his videos and was overcome with the seething desire to swallow as many tranquilizers as a swig of Vodka would wash down.

On reflection, I have decided that this is such a damning indictment of American Internet culture, that action needs to be taken.

For starters, all subscribers to this 'Fred' character's YouTube channel should be taken out back and shot.

Sorry, but YouTube lost any semblance of democracy and 'true' votes/views/ratings when it decided to have 'Promoted Videos' on the main page - as in, people (Fred included) who pay to have their videos shown and viewed.

Broadcast yourself. What a misnomer.

Holy crap. That's a million people who've chosen to publicly associate themselves with watching a teenage boy on a crappy webcam as being the best thing on the internet. That's a million people I never want to meet.

Ah, in todays internet and big brother society, you don't need either special skills, talent, luck, intelligence or even have something interesting to say to become a media star. So having 1'000'000 subscribers has little impression on me.

Judging by this thread, he doesn't do anything worthwhile that would be worth my time. smile

What Sollthar says. Except maybe luck. Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana? Psht. Not worth anything, just makes up some crappy songs and sings 'em with a ton of pink strobe lights and she's a pop star. What is the deal?

I liked the old guys. John Wayne, Gregory Peck etc.

Fred sounds like some jerk who doesn't do anything worthwhile.

Amen, this topic is the only reason I associate "Fred" with Youtube. I tend to just tune that stuff out if it's ever on in the media, and it only seems to be explicitly prevalent in media targeted at younger audiences. Or maybe I just don't watch enough TV anymore. I'm completely fine with that though.

I find it very sad that some guy who likes to make fool out of himself by recording weird (and not in the slightest bit, funny) things with his webcam and uploading them to the internet can be loved by so many people when others who have far more talent are ignored.

No, I wouldn't say so. YouTube in and of itself is fine, but of course it's been overrun by idiots. Uploading short films to YouTube, in my opinion, doesn't make you a YouTuber, if that makes any sense (I have a YouTube account, but in no way consider myself a YouTuber). YouTube would be just fine if everyone who used it were like FXhomers, but they aren't; they're YouTubers.

And to answer the poll's question, no, Fred does not deserve a million subscribers, but this guy does. biggrin

This is the reason why youtube, in my opinion, will start to fail. Sites like Hulu and vimeo serve somewhat different audiences than youtube, but do what they do a lot better than youtube. As Tarn said earlier, it certainly is an indictment of the culture and pretty sad to see...

FYI, Movie Kid, "no one" can be spelled the Old-English way of "noone", the same as "anyone" or "everyone" depending on what part of the world you're living in.

Capitalization Error: You can't start a sentence or coloned-phrase with a lowercase letter. wink

I think that YouTube has a purpose, but it's not watching short films, vlogs, or anything like that. It's all of it.

I don't see YouTube as a 'destination' to 'discover' new content, I see it as an extremely, extremely massive repository of videos new-and-old for me to search through when in need.

Likewise, Hulu is my 'destination' for FOX and NBC tv shows, and Vimeo is my 'destination' for independent shorts or film tests, etc. You might say that I like YouTube because it has become my 'search engine' of video; in that even the oddest videos I want to find are likely there.

The best example of this? My dad was remembering shows he used to love, and one of them was entitled 'The Rat Patrol'. He couldn't remember if he had the right show in mind, but sure enough, upon going to YouTube, I found a video of the show (as old and obscure as it was) which further solidified its title. Even things other than old tv shows are to be had on YouTube when you actively look for them. I've even found videos recorded at parties at my fraternity house, passed around the states to other people who have uploaded them. Cool stuff.

But I'd never go there on a whim without any particular video in mind. Never.

No. Wrong.

Capitalization Error: You can't start a sentence or coloned-phrase with a lowercase letter.
What? Yes, yes you can. A colon denotes a list, not a new set of phrases (that would be a semicolon) and, as such, you can absolutely start a colon-phrase with a lower-cased word! This is why making a perfect score on the reading/writing components of the SAT/ACT matters - for stupid mistakes that are lauded as valid corrections!

Making corrections is annoying, yes, but making self-effacing corrections about corrections is - dare I say it - much, much worse. Now you just look like a fool! biggrin

You're absolutely right, but I'd say you're also missing the point slightly regarding what most of us are discussing. I also couldn't give a crap about Fred specifically.

What I do give a crap about is Internet culture and culture in general, because I think it represents humanity in a really interesting way - sometimes positively, sometimes negatively.

An amateur piece of crap like Fred has never really been this popular in the history of the planet. It's never been possible before. He's been empowered by the Internet to various degrees to do this, which I find fascinating. The fact that the material itself is so godawful only makes the case even more interesting (even if the material itself is not interesting).

The so-called 'democratisation' of entertainment/information is hugely exciting and something I've written about for years, but it is also a hugely flawed concept in the same way that the democratic political process is half-broken. Rely on the mass opinion of the human race and its intellectual shortcomings and logic processing limitations very quickly become apparent.

I think it's an interesting topic, even if Fred himself isn't in the slightest bit interesting.

Edit: On the other hand, is this just me being old and out of touch? In the same way that cinema, radio, television, rock'n'roll, comics, computer games etc have always been reviled by the preceding generations, with only the new generations really understanding them.

Maybe stuff like Fred is the new generation's 'thing' that will separate them culturally from the previous one. A worrying thought. smile

YouTube is already failing bigtime, to the tune of HALF A BILLION dollars a year...

It's hard to make money on the net - even for a massive brand like youtube

What is iCarly
It is an American kids TV show. The reason I know this is because I am 14 and have a younger brother who watches it.

Haha you are SO funny! Not really! The only thing funny I've ever heard him say is "yellin' hurts my ears" it really isn't funny just the way he says it.

You seem to know quite a bit about this guy. Why don't you just admit you're infatuated with Fred and then maybe you two can go to Iowa and get married.

I'd like to point out that name-dropping the male leads of Hollywood movies from the studio era has nothing to do with Miley Cyrus or fred, who are young teenage celebrities. And say what you will about its content, Miley and Fred at least write and create their own material, something both Peck and Wayne, while they were consumate actors, did precious little of.

The two parties aren't even directly comparable, so I feel like you're making a pretty bizarre assertion by saying that you prefer the "old guys."I like old movies too, but that doesn't mean that a reference to them always applies.

That's probably because Peck and Wayne knew that they were actors, not writers. Hopefully 'Fred' will realise at some point that he's neither an actor or a writer and disappear.

I'm not especially familiar with Miley Cyrus, but isn't she at least a professional with some talent? I wouldn't lump her in with this Fred child.

That depends on what you consider "Talent". She has vaguely above average skill at singing very specific types of songs. Those skills don't seem to be coming from talent as much as having been dropped into the grinding-and-reshaping "Disney machine".

I would say definitely that Cyrus has to have some talent. Or that at least she was very much 'born' to be the star she is. I'm not a huge fan of her music or career or fanbase, actually, but I respect her persistence in the market she's in.

If you think about what the 'Disney machine' has created: Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff, etc - then you come to this realization that most in the 'machine' have 1.5 to 2 years of stardom, then fizzle out into direct-to-DVD movies. Not only has Cyrus not fizzled out after years of popularity, but she's netted considerably more money with a much, much larger franchise.

She might not be that talented musically, but in terms of entrepreneurial capability, I'd say she's got some wise advisors and a good mind herself. Not to mention that her father had a pretty decent one-hit wonder and was the infamous 'Doc' on the show 'Doc', which, admittedly, I used to watch an episode or two of.

Also, sort of unrelated, how can we mention Peck and not mention Grant or Stewart? While Peck shined in Mockingbird (amongst other films) I'd still say that the former two actors are not only more recognizable, but better at their craft.

EDIT:

Also, sort of related, John Wayne - if I'm not mistaken - directed five complete films and produced about a third of the films he was in. Maybe he didn't write them, but I'd say definitely that executive producing a film is an integral job to 'creating' it.

If he didn't get the simple username of "Fred" and had something more like "thefred5124" he would have no more than a couple thousand subscribers, simple as that. Personally I could care less but it would be too much more work than its worth.

As for someone who should have 1mil subs (imo of course), this guy: http://www.youtube.com/user/nutnfancy - He's a Major in the US Army who mostly does gun, knife, and tactical gear reviews with the occasional pep-talk video on various subjects. He has a lot of knowledge and is very informative, check him out.

Miley Cyrus? *Regurgitates meals from the last five weeks* $^&*%&*O!!! Sry, couldn't resist.

I think I can vaguely see how the username would affect things. I guess someone with a simple username stands out. Not necessarily in a good way, but he/she does. Because "thefred5124" is quite a bit like the thousands of other usernames that try to be clever and sometimes are, while Fred is simply and unashamedly pathetic, therefore maybe being somewhat funny. Or something like that.

One of the main reasons for his success is because he was origionally part of a channel that had a few 1000 subs then when he otained the fred account and uploaded his first video fans of the other account swooped over. having got about a few hundred subs in a short about of time due to the other account he reached onto the most subscribe list tooday/week/month (one of them). youtube picked up on this and decided that he seemed to be rather appealing so decided to put him in the "popular" section of the site and the "rising videos" section this got him more views more subs and more spots on these chats and this continued to happen until he became number one then with the number 1 spot in place he grabbed all the people who come to the site and just watch the most subbed user. so it was mostly down to luck and some help from youtube. as for him deserving it, it was a simple idea which had been done and there isnt much production value to his videos. rather stupid in my eyes, but i guess thats just what people like?
