Does this happen every time you run the program? Are you running the demo? Do you have the latest Quicktime (and DirectX if on Windows) installed? Can you give us the exact wording in the box where the program is hanging next time it happens?

The box is titled welcome to composite lab pro underneath which there is New Project then Blank timeline, select video clip and select image stream and also view documentation with video tutorials, reference manuals, and example projects
then at the bottom of the box there are three options; quit, new, and open

Here's the list of directions just in case you did something wrong (even though you probably didn't).
Click Clab start-up icon.
Click "Select Video Clip"/"Select Blank Timeline"/"Select Image Stream" (for new project) or "Open"/[project to right of box] (to load saved project).
If you click the former three, then select the video you want and click "Open".
After which you should be fine.

Yeah, clicking the "New" button should to the trick. Try selecting "Select video clip" or "Blank Timeline" to create a project. If you select video clip, it will ask you which clip you want to import. If you select blank canvas, then you can import any media into the project after it is opened, in the typical manner of most video applications.
Either way you can still import additional clips or images afterward, but if you are primarily working with a single clip, the "select video clip" option can save you a step.
So when you click the "New" button at the bottom, you don't get a project settings dialog box?
