Cannot composite alpha and RGB

Can not use this program for alpha. I use Lightwave 3d software. I can export image streams with alpha channels embeded, or export 2 streams., one RGB, and one aplha.
VL crashes trying to import image streams, so I tried exporting AVI's.
First I import the embeded alpha/RGB uncompressed avi video. Result in VL, just a black image, nothing there. So I compress the video and export again. Result, avi video in VL, but it doesnt use the embeded alpha channel. On adding it over the top of another background, it blocks it out completely!
Same thing with a seperate alpha avi. It doesnt recognise the alpha channel. This is a real bore! It works perfectly in Lightwave 3d.
However, I wanted to add some gleam FX to the space ship, and composite over the star background. VL makes it impossible to do it!
Any ideas, I can't get the full use out of the program.
the format is 1280x720 HDV

VisionLab shouldn't crash when using image streams, I've used them regularly. How are you trying to import them?
Try rendering out of Lightwave to the Quicktime Animation codec, and make sure sure it's set to Millions+ colours to retain the alpha.

It always crashes with a director player error. I import the image stream. Sometimes after 3-4 goes it suddenly imports OK, but they never work right. Alpha channels are not transparent etc.
Most of the time they will not import at all. Ive mentioned this before but never had a resolve for the issue. Any advice I've tried has never worked for me. On import it mostly hangs with a director player error.
If anyone has any ideas, I'm willing to give anything a go.

So far so good. Ive run a quick test of 32 frames exporting to QT, and its worked perfectly. I will render out the entire stream and test again, fingers crossed. Seems VL works best with QT rather than AVI.

What exact procedure are you using to import image streams? ie, where are you clicking, which menu options etc.
Glad to hear that QT is working for you.

When VL opens it gives you the option to import video or an image stream. So I click on image stream. This opens a browser window. I then click on the folder that hold the image stream and click OK. Then VL popup comes up saying director player error, something like #hack string..etc. Cant remember exactly, but it seems as if it doesn't read the file correctly, or thinks something is missing. Ive tried different image formats, but it still gives this error. The strange thing is, sometimes after 3 attempts it will read the image files OK, then another time it won't again. Very strange.

If you open a blank timeline, and then Import the image stream, do you get the same error?

Yes it has the same result if opening a blank timeline, also if I go over to the right hand panel, where you can import the files and view the thumbnails, It also gives the same error on importing image streams.

What format are the image streams?

Tried different formats, TGA,rla, bmp etc, still no joy. On trying rla it said I couldn't have different formats in an image stream, But there was no different format. They were all rla files in the folder!
Another anoyance is, very often if I import a large QT file that is set to Animation compression, when I import the file, all I get is a black screen. This will also happen with AVI files if they are uncompressed, unless I compress them with another codec like lagerith lossless, or another codec. I spend half my time trying to get the files into VL correctly.
