Post-production is an unpredictable thing. Once the excitement of pre-production is finished and the adrenaline rush of the shoot is over, there's the long, hard road of editing, visual effects and sound to walk. Sometimes it can be quick and painless. Other times...it can take a more winding route.

The FXhome Film Project was intended to be completed in 2008 and now here we are over a year after shooting wrapped with the film still unreleased. It's going to be a while yet until the film is ready for public consumption but in the meantime we wanted to show you some updated concept art and work-in-progress VFX elements.

Cruciform Base

First we have the selected concept for the mining base. It was heavily influenced by the various ideas in the World Building topic from last year, with similarities to many of the concepts explored there. If you look closely you can see a person in a tiny spacesuit walking along outside.

Here's a shot of the partly textured, simplified, 3D version, which gives a better idea of the base's layout and shape. The four items with the red markings at the extremities are escape pods that can detach from the base and take off into low orbit if needed.

Set extensions & CG exteriors

Although an elaborate set was constructed for the week-long shoot, some shots still required extensions to replace greenscreen areas. Here we have a before-and-after showing the corridor being extended:

An extensive sequence takes place outside the base, which required a series of greenscreen shots of Kate in the spacesuit. Here's a sneak peek at what this sequence is going to look like:

We'll bring you more updates as we get them!

Looks like its comming along, texturing the base is really going to take some time (lots of nooks and cranies) to get in to. Keep up the good work, looking forward for the release.

Looks very nice, can't wait for more info but very excited to see the final product (especially as I was never around these forums to catch the intial pre-production threads).

Good luck to those who are working on this!

Looking awesome guys. Though I can't help but wonder how awesome it would have been if you built a miniature of the base in addition to/instead of the CG model. Always loved the look of practical models more.

Yeah, I'd have loved to see a miniature of the base too. smile Logistics of this particular film meant that wasn't really possible, but it would certainly have been awesome. Not least because we could then have had a miniature to hang on the office wall. razz

I imagine Ashman will be along to talk about why he chose CG over miniatures at some point.

Exterior shots look really nice. Must be a handsome and talented person working on those indeed. smile

I like the quality of the base model. Looks neat even without textures.

Hey peeps,

First off thanks for everyone's kind words. The artists, especially the good looking one, put their heart and soul into the project so it's much appreciated to hear people like what they are seeing so far. There's still a few things being finalised on the base and the texture work is another two weeks away from being completed. It's getting there. biggrin

Absolutely! We all love the idea of using models, and this would have been a great opportunity to do so.

Finding people to design, build and paint the model at the level of detail we wanted wouldn't have been cheap or easy. Then to bring a crew back to light and setup the shots wasn't feasible at the time. It came down to time, schedules and practicality.

It made more sense logistically to use that time in post, it was lucky we did because the base design changed to accommodate certain visual changes made from the script.

After talking it through with the vfx department we came to a final decision we could achieve good results with a computer model especially with our shot selection. It also means the model would blend in better with the other effects, creating a more complete visual style.

Miniatures is the next step I'm sure, but for another project.

We'll update you with more stills from the texture process as they come through from the artist.

Rest assured it will be sooner than you think. wink

Best,
Ash

Just thought I'd throw it out there that actually I built everything but the escape pods from scratch. Not trying to be a dick about it, just don't want to be misrepresented. Glad you guys like it.

Sorry for the confusion, I could only see the images on my phone so it was rather small. I had originally built the model in 3d, as you can see here:

I thought that they would be using my model in the film. What I didn't know is that they had multiple artists working on the same thing, and would use parts they thought would work best from each model.

Wow, this Fracture project caught my attention, and that 3d model looka really cool, straightforward and original look for a base. Looks like a real cool project, can't wait to see the completed product. good luck, on that and future projects

I was wondering if you still need help with the vfx? I sent in an email last summer but if you guys still need people to help with the effects, I'd love to help out. Anyway the film looks like it's coming out great. I hope to be able to watch it when its finished.

Hey Atom,

Our lead artist has given us a final date in which they're hoping to have everything finished. It's just shy of christmas. If that date stays true we are hoping to have the film ready earloy in the new year.

As I'm starting to get shots through I'll make sure some stills go up on the thread from the footage.

Come January we'll be looking for artists from the community to help promote the film including artwork creation for the dvd and posters. I should be getting more updates this week from everyone so I'll post those also.

Far from dead! It just has a lot of visual effects to get through. 70 plus!

The exported clips are around 500MB at full quality so I'm in the process of having them transfered to the ext Hard Drive ready for the edit.

I'm currently at work but when I get home tonight I'll post a couple up. smile

That's a promise.

Looking awesome guys. I really can't wait to see this. The effects look great. I was really impressed with the woman walking through the storm. This compositing on that, I thought, was great. Matte paintings look awesome too! smile

I have to say, from what I saw, that the music sounds really good. About how long do you think this will be?

(edit) I actually meant to put this post in the November update, sorry about that. I forgot I went over to august.

Hi not sure how this all works, Just found it from a link on my friends facebook. If you guys need any help with FX.... I can help guide your fx guys if you're working in maya.

Couple of things I could either help your FX guys make or send them a file to use, low lying fog for those intro shots. It really helps to sell scale, and adds some extra movement to bring the scene to life.

I have free video tutorials (on my site) for how to do rocket trails if those escape pods launch in shot.

You can look me up on IMDB if you want to know what I've worked on, or my sort of outdated reel is on my site too. But basically I'm not much help if you are not using MAYA for the FX. Since I'm swamped at work, I couldn't do any significant work in addition to that.

Anywhoo. Love what you're doing. Let me know if I can help.

Dave
