How do I limit the time a mask is on the screen

I am trying to mask a head in front of a lightsaber and i can create the mask but I do not seem to be able to have the mask over two or three frames..it is there for the whole scene..how do I limit the time on it?

You can't technically adjust the length of the mask itself; it is as long as the clip or effect it is associated with. To all intents and purposes though, it is fairly easy to change the amount of time the mask affects the scene. The easiest way is to drag it out of frame when you don't need it.

You can also keyframe the transparency to stop the mask from having any effect.

Hello,

My favoured method is to slice the clip at the point i no longer want the mask and then delete the mask from the newly created layer.

I was going to mention that one as well, TemporalCoder, as it is another good option. Especially if you are adding the mask to a media layer.

I left it out because he was talking about adding masks to an effects layer, and that technique doesn't always work for effects. For his lightsabers it will be just fine, but try that technique on a particle effect and you'll run into problems.
