Hey, I'm trying to do a star wars style dogfight in space by using space ship models on strings in front of a black backdrop and then placing a space background later. The thing is, if i don't use that SUPER tedious masking effect, the space ship will appear partially see-through. I was wondering if there is a tool i can use so that the ship appears to be in front of the picture of space i put in with my computer.
I'm hoping you can follow all of that.

There isn't an automatic way to do that in EffectsLab, no. The reason is that what you are trying to do is compositing, and EffectsLab is not a compositing program.
Either CompositeLab or VisionLab Studio could handle that quite easily, however. And if using either of those programs, you may get even better results using a greenscreen than using black, depending on the colors of your spacecraft and how they are lit.

Yeah, you definitely want to shoot this against greenscreen and use a proper compositing program.
Also, if your video camera has the ability to shoot at a high framerate, make sure you ramp it up as far it goes.
