Hi... Just trying to get to grips with VLS so please be patient biggrin
I am going through the Giant Chase example and playing around with it to see how masking works.

The question is how to remove a mask on a particular frame..if it is possible.

I know how to add a mask but I dont want it there all the time as it interfers with another (action) layer... so is it possible to turn on and turn off a particular mask?

The only way I seem to be able to achieve this is to Animate the mask to a different area of the canvas... away from where I dont want it in the Time Line.... and then to Animate it back to where it was originally when I want the mask to be active again... if that makes sense? Of course what then happens is that that particular Mask object gets animtaed all around the canvas.... Im sure that is not suppose to be the way?

Also, while I am here: I am going through the Tutorials and I notice that the Tab "Attributes" is shown but in my VLS it shows "Info". Is this just because I am using a later version?

Thanks
Andy

You can either move the mask out of the way when you don't need it, or adjust the Transparency on the mask to 0 to turn the mask off. Either way works fine.

Ok... so I was right in my thinking then.

Would it not be simpler to have the facility to turn off/on? Like right click on mouse choose Off/On at key frame?

I am pretty experienced in using "similar" software using Timlines with Key Frames... for example SwishMax for Flash movies and there is the simple facility to Place/Remove an object.

I also am wondering if the apparant existing way to move the Mask Object out of the way or to reduce transparancy adds to the size of the file?

Thanks

Yes, it would be simpler, from a user's point of view, to be able to turn them on and off. Under the current system though, as a mask is always associated with a media or effects layer, the mask will have the same duration as the layer it is associated with.

Which reminds me of the other way to manage masks: You can slice the clip at the point where you want the mask to end, then apply the mask only to the portion you desire.

Technically, yes, it will probably increase the size of the project file, but in practice the size increase will be so negligible as to be irrelevant.

Ok... thanks.

I will probably be a "pain" as a new user as I go through VLS suggesting things that make it easier for MEbiggrin

Heh, user feedback is always welcome. As long as you understand that implementing good ideas isn't always as simple as we'd all like, and improvements of that sort won't necessarily be realized in the immediate future.

But anything that makes it easier for you would be classified as an improvement, and improvements are a good thing. So suggest away.smile
