Okay, so I'm pretty familiar with my Macbook Pro, but I have watched the tutorial videos over, and over, and over again, but when I follow the instructions exactly as they say to do, I can't accomplish what I am trying to do.
Here are the main topics/questions I am struggling with...

How do I import footage that I purchased? (Special Effects, Gunfire, Gore)

How come when I import a FXpreset (the ones online) it doesn't show me the ones that I imported, although it says I already imported them?

How do I view the different types of lasers, muzzle flashes, neon lights, optics, particles, etc?
(The "just click on it" doesn't help...it's not working)

On a second note, when making my movie, should I take the clip of my actors and add the effects BEFORE throwing it into into my editing system?

Please help....

I'm not sure about importing purchased footage.

But as for the imported presets:
Yes, they are probably imported, you're probably just looking in the wrong section. Click on the different types of effects to open up different categories of presets. They might be in a different category than you think.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking with the next question but if you mean how do you add the effects to your video, then you click and drag the desired type of effect onto the timeline or canvas. Then, you'll have to design the effect from scratch.

Depending on the shot, I find it easier to put the effects in and then put it into an editor. It doesn't really matter though.

Hope this helps!

When I click on the different type of effects there are no sub categories. There are no presets.
I literally just installed this today...do I have a bad disc?

Click on import media to open AVI or .move files.
Click import FXpreset to import presets into your program.

You'll get this dialogue box when you click import FXpreset... find your downloaded presets and import.
It should be a zip file... I'm not sure if you have to unzip it on a Mac though. You'll see a task bar as the presets are downloading into your software.

You'll see this right after you import a video... click on Effects.

You should see all your effects now. Click on any effects icon and you should see a dropdown menue with a bunch of presets

You can click and drag an effect onto your timeline or just double click.
When you do this the effect will appear in whatever frame you are on in the timeline.

If your presets aren't showing up at all, download the latest installer from here, and follow the instructions here for a clean re-install.

I have reinstalled, directly from my account.
Still there is no presets.
The only one that is there is under optics it says "105mm flare"
that is the only one that is there.
I have imported the correct type of files correctly.
There is no presets under Particles.
There is no presets under Neon Light
There is no presets under Laser
There is no presets under Muzzle flashes.
When I try to self-reinstall the presets ( Home->Documents->FxHome->EffectsLabPro 1.5->Preset
there is a list of 234 .FXpreset files, and when I install them from File-> Import FX Preset Pack, a little meter shows up and it "installs" all 234. After the installation, the meter disappears, and it says they have all been installed. When I go to effects->Particles, Neon Light (etc) there is still no presets.
I try to self-reinstall all of this again and it says, word for word "One or more of the presets you tried to import already exists and therefore was not imported". Fine. I imported it.
WHERE IS IT?
it is in the correct format. I followed the instructions over and over again to install it. It tells me it installed, yet it is not there.
What the heck is going on?

When you say self-reinstall, do you mean you are opening the presets folder and moving files? If so, that is very likely the cause of the problem. You shouldn't ever have to open the presets folder, you only use the Import command from within the program to install presets.

When you re-installed the program, were you very careful to follow every step of the instructions in the link I provided? Skipping a step and not deleting the correct folders will nullify the entire re-install process, so you have to be sure to follow every step.

If you get a chance to answer my questions specifically at some point, it might be helpful in identifying the problem.

When the presets don't show in the program, but it says they are already present when you try to re-install them, it is because the preset database has become corrupt. this is the reason that these steps are so importang in the re-install:

WINDOWS:
2. Delete the 'FXhome' folder in your 'My Documents'.

3. Delete this folder:

• Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local Settings\Application Data\EffectsLab Pro 1.5

• Vista or Windows 7:
C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\EffectsLab Pro 1.5

MAC:
2. Go to your "Home" folder then "Documents" and delete the "FXhome" folder.

3. Go back to your "Home" folder and then in to "Library" and then "Preferences". Delete the "EffectsLab 1.5" folder.

If after deleting those folders and re-installing, the problem persists, then I suspect there must be a permissions issue when you are installing that is preventing bits of the program from getting filed correctly during installation.

I don't think the problem is with the way you are installing the presets, but just in case you find it helpful, have a look at this video, which details the entire process.

hmmm
so when i right clicked on the FXhome Effectslab pro app icon, A folder showed up labeled "contents".when i opened up the "contents folder a giant list of other stuff dropped down, one of them being "presets" when i opened up the "presets" folder, there WAS NO PRESETS!!!

upon my clean reinstallation, again following the the exact same instructions that you, Axeman, provided
i noticed something a little different.
once i installed the product, (zip file->installer) the application: FXhome EffectsLab Pro said that the size of the Application was 98.7 MB
now i opened it and there is a little progress meter installing/importing all 221 Fxpresets
then the activation wizard app pops up. and i choose the option "login to my existing Fxhome.com account"
put in my email address/password and it pops up that the product is activated and ready to use...blah blah blah
[im writing what i see on my screen step by step on here]
so i hit finish and it goes away.
now when i go into my finder to find the application, the size of it says 68.3 MB, not 98.7....?
and i open up the FX home Effects lab pro application...choose full as my canvas quality....choose blank timeline...it tells me its not a sound editing software...choose regular project settings...and there is a little watch where my cursor should be....okay...watch is gone...
go to the toolbox->effects...click on one of the effects....still no presets.

i don't know how there can be a permission issue considering how i am the only user on this computer and i am the administrator with full access to read/write all apps/programs.....

okay woah. when i downloaded one of the fx presets from this website (one that was user made) and i tried to install it (file->importfx pack) the little menu/loading bar popped up loaded quickly and then a notification thingy pops up saying the following....
"One or more of the presets you tried to import already exists and therefore was not imported." ...woah.
How can this be? How can it be already imported if it does not show up under the effects on the right hand side of the toolbar?

i followed the exact instructions of bringing those folders (you mentioned) to the trash and then emptying the trash...

whats going on?

The file size gets smaller because a lot of pieces from the installer get moved to locations other than the application. Primarily the "FXhome" folder in your Documents folder, which holds all of the preset files and the texture files that go with them.

I don't know what's going on, but am trying to figure it out.

If after downloading a preset from the site you get the 'already present' message, then one of two things has happened:

1. The preset you downloaded is included in the installer (it does include quite a few user presets), or,

2. The original folder containing the presets from the previous installation never got deleted, and you had already installed this preset in the past.

What OS are you running?

What folder to the presets need to be in? (What sub-directory?)
The path that all 221 of my presets are in is
home->documents->fxhome->effectslab pro 1.5->preset and all of them are there. Now the interesting thing is that in the preset folder, only one of the presets actually shows up: 105mm flare.fxpreset. by shows up, i mean its in the toolbox->effects->optics
...

im running a OS X version 10.6.2 (snow leopard), 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (processor)

~thanks for trying to help...

I think i found the problem.
When I installed the program off the physical CD/DVD that I ordered, the presets in the folder (Home->Documents->FXhome->EffectsLab Pro 1.5->preset, all 259 presets that are there are in the folowing format: ".FXpreset"

I am also using safari. Should I use firefox instead?
Should I try to re-write the format of the presets to 'FXpreset_pack" ?

When downloaded, the presets should have the .FXpreset_pack extension. After they are installed, the suffix will change to .FXpreset, but that is due to processing done by the program during the installation of the presets. It breaks up the .FXpreset_pack file and places the correct bits in their appropriate locations.

It is critical, however, that the presets have the correct .FXpreset_pack extension before you install them. I highly recommend using Firefox, as Safari in particular tends to cause problems by automatically unzipping the .FXpreset_pack files. It is also critical that you not try to place any presets into the correct folders. Download them, then install them directly from your desktop, your downloads folder, or whatever location you like to download to. Leave the files exactly where they downloaded, then select the Install Fxpreset option from the file menu in VisionLab, and select the preset files.

I too am running Snow Leopard, so hopefully I can help you sort this out.

The first few steps of the clean re-install process are essentially a full uninstall. So if you follow the steps that involve deleting folders, you will be properly uninstalled.

Their support team isn't able to offer telephone support, but during normal business hours you can generally find someone in the chat to provide live assistance.

Okay.

After downloading Firefox, and re-clean installing for about the 10th time now, there is still no presets. I checked, double checked, and triple checked, that I followed the instructions (for a reinstall) very carefully that I didn't leave any files behind. After opening up Effectslab Pro..there was still no presets. None. At all.

When I downloaded a couple of random presets from the library on this site, they downloaded in the right format, I didn't move them from the downloads folder, yet still...no presets.

sad

Hopefully when the team gets back into the office Monday they will have some ideas for you.

In the clean re-install instructions, before the actual steps it suggests trying to fix permissions using Disk Utility, and disabling FileVault -- did you already do those?

Its especially annoying as we are running the same system and it works fine here. There's got to be something I'm overlooking; I just need to figure out what.

I am going to try to repair the disk utility now...and then reinstall... if it works/doesn't work I'll let you know...

Thanks for all the help smile

okay forum/whoever (if anyone) is still trying to help me
here is the latest info.

So I re-clean installed on a new user account that has full administrative duties, and one thing that was different was that instead of the lone preset (105mm) showing up under toolbox->effects, there was two. There was 24 logo preset(...but I downloaded that one a long time ago and deleted it...where is it hiding for it to show up now?), in its respective category. One thing that I did notice is that both presets were in the same folder as all 220 other presets.
Documents->FXhome->Effectslab pro 1.5->preset
now another interesting thing is that when I downloaded another preset from this site, it also appeared in that folder, but did NOT appear in the actual program... hmm.

I don't know if this helps, but I am on wireless/through a Airport (Mac) [not a physical airport with planes] and I do have norton anti-virus software...

Before reinstalling, I ran disk utility again, and this popped up (see attached upload).
I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not...

Oh and fyi, I am running firefox and only firefox, I also have full permissions and firevault has (and always was turned off)
