is there a way to set the keyframing mode to 'hold' rather than 'linear', so that I can change an object position at frame X without bringing unintentional intermediate changes to the frames between keyframe 1 and 2?
This would be very useful to adjust an object position so that it fits to the footage camera movements. Thank you.

Yes there is a way. Using the draw keyframe tool but a key frame on the frame before the frame you want to change. Then go to the other frame (forward) and move what ever it is around. Tell me if you more details/better explanation.
-Hope this helps.
