How do you change the video file format so you can open it in movie maker?

You have to select AVI in the Render Settings. More info about rendering can be found int the manual or the knowledgebase.

But, if you have to render in Quick Time then download "Any Video Convertor" online for free and convert the video into MPEG-II (#mpg). ANd then just import into Movie Maker.
