Hey guys,
I'm currently in the process of funding and building a studio for both photographic and video/film work. I'm about to make an offer and sort the lease out on a 1500sq ft warehouse with high ceilings and a brilliant 20ft shutter door which was meant for double decker buses. I've planned and drawn out nine different sets including an infinity cove and a greenscreen as well as a makeup/greenroom and an office which will be on a mezzanine floor I've had designed and will take three days to build! smile

I hope that perhaps some of you guys in the Uk that are photographers or even video people will want to use it or whatever, I'll be doing photography nights and social events there so should be pretty cool.

At the moment I'm just going over the excel documents and budgets. I'll probably spend about 100 hours over the first week or so building it whilst drinking Monster Energy Drink...

I'll keep you guys updated! But yeah, hello and here I go! eek!

I can't see where you said the studio is located?

I'm guessing it's not sound proofed, does it have high speed broadband.

Let me know when it's up and running, might be able to put some work your way.

Thanks

I've thought about putting a small sound ready room in there, it will have high speed fibre broadband yes. It will be located on the M20 in Ashford Kent, so about one hour drive from London (or 1hour 20 from Pinewood I did it in the other week). There is a new high speed link train from Kings Cross to Ashford that is 35mins long, which will be awesome for the studio smile I've also got a few French photographers and film-makers already interested, the Ashford International means you can get from France to the studio in less than an hour. Something the French togs I've contacted are excited about...

.. might be something to do with why I've called the studio HotFrog

Sounds good, I'm sending you a pm.

Does it have racks for over head lighting?
Are you supplying an equipment such as dolly tracks or would we need to bring our own.

Setting up your own studio has been a dream of mine for years so I must say very well done, if I can help in any way let me know.

Thanks

Have replied to your PM Ian.

There will be some equipment available with the studio, a couple of decent cameras and some nice lighting, I think I'm going to go for Kino lighting and some other LED's. Can get some really great stuff with LED's and the power usage is minimal. Overhead lighting on racks - not too sure yet, once the mezzanine floor is built then yes! smile

After a few rounds of negotiations we are now happy to sign and have formed the limited company as well as set a date for 'moving in' of the 1st August. I'm off now to look at an old club that is closing down and offloading all of their props and items, hoping to grab a few bargains for the studio!

http://www.hotfrogstudio.com if anyone is interested, I also settled on a logo but thanks for all the help people!

Apologies Ian, I was frantically trying to get cameras working on both 007 and R stage. I didn't have any time to pop over in the hours you were at the studio. Hope the meeting went well?

The studio construction is well under way smile Below is the beginning construction I'm putting together of the infinity cove. (eek).

Taking a lot of time but I've managed yesterday to get a plasterer at Pinewood to mould a fibre glass corner cove for the place so should save a lot of time! woooo

Update : September 30th

Due to work and family commitments the studio build went onto the back burner, which has worked out to my advantage just about! I've found a plasterer willing to help and sculpt a corner piece in fibre glass for the infinity cove - should save lots of time and experimental DIY. All being all I should have that piece in place by the end of next week and I can go crazy with some button polish and white emulsion to create my large spaces and sets!

So in the next few weeks I should be looking at a finished studio ready for hire! After a few long nights and sleepless hours... although don't hold me to that, work hours have been crazy recently!

Cool, well done.

If I can help you, I've taken over a whole studio with 6 sound stages, we will be renting out some of the studio space, this means putting adverts out etc, if you want to have a chat I'd love to be able to recommend your studio to people that come to look at mine, maybe have a link to yours from our site (being made up) so we can cover our area Hayes and your area.

I know this sounds a bit upfront but how much would you be charging do you think for the individual sets / floorspace in feet . This sounds very interesting to me- it's quite a way from me but it's by far the best sounding space i've some across.

Update 21st October 2010

I was making good progress on the studio and it was all underway ready for the opening which I thought would have happened at the end of September. Due to other work commitments and a great job offer for a film the studio took a back seat (even though the rent didn't). At the moment I'm quoting for a few photographers to use the space in November and a small crew to come and film on the cove with a three camera set up. Should be great smile Also have struck a nice deal with the Harley shop in Canterbury and they'll push for owners to use the studio to snap their awesome rides! Woo!

Anyways, on Monday at work I'll be collecting the corner piece from the plasterers. It looks awesome and I can't wait to get it in place and begin the long task of polishing and painting the huge cove smile

Small bits of decorating begin tonight (along with more woodwork fun fun!)

Newbie filming question:

I'm guessing by cove you mean the shape, and more specifically the one pictured.

How is this used in film?

It'll be used for the corner of the studio space. Having a cove edge enables you to have a horizonless background, which is particularly useful if you're using a white background or a green screen setup.

If you have hard edges to the walls, like in an ordinary room, the light gets seriously dampened in the corners and along the edges, making it impossible to get a smooth background.

Aha, that figures. Does it just go in the corner, or does it continue along the edge of the wall(s)?

It's going in the corner, hence why the piece is moulded from plaster work and then I'll have a fibre glass piece to slot in from the plaster mould, from that the corner going upwards and along the sides on the floor will be curved as well. It's taken a serious amount of precise wood cutting and forming to create the area and template for all this. Not something I'd do again in a hurry smile

Then marketing can begin smile Already done a few test shoots and did a test shoot on the huge cove yesterday. Just a big ol army set to build next week. Will get some photos up here then! woo woo
