So, a while back I was researching social networks in message boards for a project. I decided to sample Fxhome.

For fun, I thought I'd post a social network graph of Fxhome based off of a random sample of 100 threads.

Enjoy!

You are insane.

Go ahead and explain this a little further, eh? Is it based on numbers of posts? +1s? Quotes?

Yes, I am insane...but mostly in a sane way.

Edges on the graph represent conversations..or the participations in conversations. This "participation in a conversation" is determined by one's participation in a thread.

Basically, this graph shows:

1.) How connected individuals are to each other.

and

2.) How individuals sort of "bridge" connections between outsiders and the center individuals.

As you can see, Tarn, an admin, is at the center of the graph as he plays a part in almost any conversation.

The moderators tend to encircle the graph...monitoring each thread, but also acting as gatekeepers, welcoming newcomers into the fxhome web.

The other big circles represent people with special knowledge that others depend on (sollthar - the giant pink circle, pooky - the small green circle, etc).

Bigger the circle...the more outgoing and diverse (in terms of connections) the individual is.

"Common" circles indicate users that I had preset as common/regular users.

Gotcha. I figured it had something to do with how the posts were related to each other, but it wasn't perfectly clear until now. Interesting.

For example, Aculag, you're represented as "Jerusalem Jackson" #60 in the graph. You talked in the same threads with Serpent #19 and Arktic #68 in the sample.

Can you change the font color from blue to something else? I can't see some connections with the blue circles hiding the text. Or am I missing some sort of .png secret?

This is great!

I tend to do the same thing with all my classes regularly to see how connected each individual is in the class. Find it a great and useful instrument.

This is the closest I've felt to being a religious icon.

Very interesting stuff. How did you go about selecting the random threads? What was your actual process for constructing the chart?

We should have more of these. Any chart where I'm at the centre is cool, if you ask me.

Well, the colors of the labels correspond to the colors of the circles. I can try to change it. If not, I can try to do something with the font.

I was tempted to rename my account to ADMIN_14, but feared it would spark utter confusion as everybody else changed their names similarly.

In fact, simply posting this might have the same effect, knowing Aculag.

I'll upload more stuff later...basically, I made two perl scripts (CS nerd-talk for "I made a really cool program"). One hit fxhome's webserver a hundred times to download threads. The other took the thread data, which was actually filtered to only contain usernames, and made edges and vertices in a format known as the pajek format. It's sort of a special way to represent a graph in a text file.

After I have the "graph" file, I just input it into some visualization program. You can use the pajek program in the link to construct the graph. I used NodeXL, which is a nice plugin for Excel. It loads all the data into spreadsheet form, so that you can actually add columns to do advanced calculation, and use those columns to construct the graph. Do some tweaking...figure out what the size of the circles represent, etc.

And voila! You have a pretty graph.

*fights urge to make joke about Serpent and blue balls*

And, you know what MasterPie? In a stark contrast to FXhome Dude, I'm happy I'm not included in the network... I'm not here to make friends and my inclusion in a project like this would clearly point to the contrary.

What I want to see is an animated/interactive version with a timeline so you can see the changing influencers and relationships over the last 10 years of the FXhome community.

Sure, why not. It might have to wait until I get back on campus so that I can abuse the bandwith to go through every Fxhome thread.

Okay, here are the two perl scripts:

Forum.pl
Make_pajek.pl

You will need to type:

chmod +X forum.pl
chmod +X make_pajek.pl

in order to make the scripts work.

Usage:

1.)
./forum.pl [how many random threads to look at] > [outfilename]

e.g ./forum.pl 100 > my_fxhome_data

2.)
./make_pajek.pl my_fxhome_data > my_fxhome_graph

Unfortunately the YouTube compression has killed all the detail, but it's still interesting to watch people come and go over the years.

Wow! How did you do that? It was remarkably accurate. Seeing myself floating around with an Avatar avatar during my crazy Avatar period then disappearing was fun. Avatar...

By the way you should re-title your video: "Fxhome in 5 minutes" Next time Atom berates a newbie for not knowing the history around here they can answer: "I have seen the long and the short of it."

Haha, oh wow, that was pretty amazing. I seem to come and go a lot around here every since I joined in '06. I kept intensely wishing that I wouldn't disappear every time my avatar would start to dissolve. Very fun to watch smile
