Hi folks,

I am considering buying an external flash for my camera, a nikon d60, fairly soon. I want something portable and fairly quick charging, ideally that doesn't cost the Earth.

Looking at Nikon's Speedlight SB-400, any thoughts?

The SB400 is a good option- portable, compact, battery's can just be swapped/charged. It's supposedly got great bounce flash and should result in more natural looking pictures. Also has great reviews.

The SB600 or SB800 will be more powerful, naturally, but their hefty price tag may not be worth the added weight and decrease in portability unless you shoot large areas at low ISO settings frequently or weddings and such events.

Upgraded flashes are great because you don't use up the camera batteries (so more shots) and the built-in flash is never quite good enough. This should be a big improvement over the D60's built in.

Hope that helps a bit. I use Canon's mostly, so I'm sorry it's not more specific in recommendations.

That's great thanks - backs up what I have been reading. Yeah my main reason for replacing the built-in is needing to be able to bounce rather than flash directly. Cheers DV
