Basic masking question

hi,
i have a problem here,i just wanna make ma hand invisible inorder to make it to look like a severed arm,but when i use mask and click animate i see only a black color when i mask.i need to make my hand to disapper
please help

So just to confirm: you're taking the video clip with you and your arm, and are then drawing a mask over your arm, which leaves a black shape?

The reason this is happening is that the mask is cutting out that portion of the video. If there is nothing 'underneath' you will simply see empty black. To have something show through the 'hole', you need to put something else on the layer beneath.

For this particular effect to work you need to put a layer below which is of the same location, and the same shot, but without you in it. This way the mask hole will reveal the identical layer beneath (minus you, of course), filling in the hole so it looks like the same layer.
