For this year’s competition we wanted to come up with something really special, so we called up our American friends over at Tubetape and put together an epic set of prizes that should entice any self-respecting filmmaker (or photographer!).

Check it out: We’re giving away our EffectsLab Pro and PhotoKey 3 software, plus stock video and image discs and two tutorial DVDs. Tubetape meanwhile are providing their new Green Screen Starter Kit, comprising CompositeLab Pro, a 10’x12’ green screen, a cool flo lighting kit and even more stock videos, images and virtual sets.

But that’s not all. As well as all that FXhome and Tubetape gear you can also win a Canon EOS T2i Rebel (aka the 550D in Europe), a hybrid camera that blends superb DSLR photography with HD video.

That’s over $2000 worth of prizes. And it all goes to a single winner. Want that winner to be you? Here’s what you have to do:

Make a movie trailer.

It doesn’t matter what style or genre, and you can base it on an original idea or do a parody of a real movie. What we’re looking for are effective trailers: they need to make us want to see the full movie, even if it doesn’t actually exist at this point.

The closing date for submissions is October 29th, at which point judges from Tubetape and FXhome will select a shortlist of the best trailers. These will then go up for a public vote on FXhome.com to determine the winner of the aforementioned excellent prizes.

Important stuff:

1. This is open to everybody. You don’t have to use FXhome or Tubetape products (although you can if you want!).
2. Entries must be between 30 seconds and 3 minutes in length.
3. All entries must be submitted on or before October 29th 2010.
4. Competition entries must be submitted as video responses to one of the official competition videos on YouTube (Click here to go to the video!).
5. You must have permission to use any music or other assets included in your trailer.
6. No cash alternative prize. smile

Hehe. The decision to make this contest doesn't have anything to do with you noticing the potential audience effect (read: commercial value) of a recent trailer mockery? wink

Good luck to everyone entering! Let's get the popcorn ready and see some fun trailers coming

Actually, we came up with the competition concept before that particular trailer parody, believe it or not. smile

Wow, great competition. I really want to enter this but I'm not sure I'll have the time this month. Have to try very hard to make the time, fake trailers are so fun to make.

Ben, I think it should be capped at one, keeps it fair.

Looking forward to all the entries this is sure to get.

We've been wanting to go the 'seriously cool' route recently, and a trailer would be a good chance to show that, but considering CX3 as competition I think we may have to delve further into parody. We'll see, we were certainly gearing up to do something similar to this - I just hope we can get it planned and done in time.

Well guys, I'm still talking to some of my more creative friends, but you may have some competition coming from over here in northern Cali. Finding time will be tricky, but we'll works something out. It's been too long since my group has done a fun project, so we've got a couple ideas stored away in the back of our minds that should translate pretty well.

I don't understand- do you not get the concept of a parody?

You can lift concepts/names/themes/similar actors/clothing/locations directly from whatever the thing is, you just have to/should shoot all your own footage. Parodies (normally) go for trying to be closest, at least in visual concept, to the original material without actually being it. But yeah, it also requires you making it all yourself. Which, also, is about as hard as it sounds in terms of thinking of things to copy/replicate/parody. smile

Because it's the most timely example of this, coincidentally, I point you towards my very own parody, Inebriation.

Initially Ben wanted to keep some shots from the original trailer that weren't our own (under the idea 'hey, it's copying material anyway with the idea') and shoot for exact consistency by replacing some choice shots, while I wanted it to be more about keeping the essence of the trailer and making it consistently our own. We met somewhere in the middle, but with all our own footage.

That's the best (and only real) way to do it in my book.

Heh. Completely by coincidence- we know those guys. Greg, a common collaborator with us and the co-cinematographer on Exodus and MSB, works with that whole group at his college (Chapman) in Orange County.

Even more coincidental, I met John (the main actor in Inebriation) through Greg several years ago; and it was our healthy competitive nature that made Greg challenge us that his sketch comedy friends video (Contraception) would be better (once we had started shooting) than Inebriation.

It was in some ways this spite for Greg and Contraception that led John to a stronger commitment and much lengthier shoot/dedication to work on our little parody.

Also funny somewhat, once our video took off- Contraception changed their video tags on YouTube to read 'Andrew Adams Ben Adams Atomic Productions Inebriation'. Or something like that, at least for a week or two. Pretty humorous, actually. smile

But yeah, we're going to be doing more than one, since we've had a trailer in the works already and have been working with some decently-sized projects.

Please.

Those were just hype pics, not even with the right actor. How do you expect us to win this thing without some throwback Atomic Hype Machine®? (Before your time, I'm thinking though, Dan.) biggrin

We were scouting locations and checking out lighting that day so that we'd be prepared, since our two lead actors are both out-of-town people that go to surrounding schools near (but not in) Austin.

It's a mad-dash to the finish, though. Thus far we've been pretty happy with it, and how two of our long-time friends and actors have been portraying their respective roles.

But only time will tell if we're able to get the visual sameness and quality that we're looking for before the deadline. Is it October 29th by midnight, or on midnight, as in the moment it becomes the 29th? Or is it by the 30th? And what timezone? So many questions, questions, questions... smile

Any set number on how many videos will be shortlisted, or is that contingent on the quality of submissions?

Also, will voting be open to the general public, or will you have to have an FXhome account/provide email to vote?

Looking forward to seeing some submissions from around FXhome...looks like all of the submissions thus far are from outside our ranks smile

Voting will be open to all, but you will need an FXhome account. You won't need to actually own anything, of course.

Errmm, I hope so wink Mine is half way done- shooting and editing as we go, but hopefully it comes out decent. We decided to go with a horror trailer- hopefully it's pretty cool.

Might I suggest slightly more time to get entries in next time? I know that with everything going on, I just barely got this into my schedule. And it's pushing it to the point that I may need to edit on my laptop while I'm gone during the day. wink Just a suggestion for the next one. It can be hard to assemble a crew/ actors that have packed schedules too, especially with so few weekends.

Best of luck everyone

We have a LOT to do with ours, as we only shot a handful of shots when we had people in town. Making calls right now to get people to help us after class today and get it all, somehow, done. The fact that our internet has crapped out at our apartment hasn't helped, as we can't download the trailer we need, the music we need, or upload the trailer we'll have made when we're done.....right now we're resorting to iPhone and campus use, heh.

We'll see. Hoping to just knock ours out sometime tonight, then miss class tomorrow from sleeping. biggrin

Just finished my trailer! I know some of the acting isn't perfect, and such, but it was rushed and my actors were a little selfish at points in time, and when they were willing to film....

So here it is!

I hope I get in the shortlist, you never know. Thanks for watching guys! Comments...please.

Cheers!

I hope I don't sound rude ben, but why do you need the prizes...

Not rude at all, I just don't own a greenscreen or a camera (mine is borrowed from my dad and he desperately wants it back! biggrin) and I could always, always, always use more lights - and put them to notable use. That, and the software is something I've pretty much always wanted.

Also, we love making movies (obvious) and we love having a reason, especially a competitive reason, to do something.

Oh thanks for explaining. I just had a little angerbuild up inside, seeing as my camera stinks (I'm being generous wink ) And a little jealousy I had for not being able to make as good as films as you.

No hard feeling? And best of luck!

PS-Did you watch mine, haha?

Also, remember that we're just college students with a single still camera, a GL2 we got half a decade ago, and some lights we won from FXHome Awards 2008. We're far from a 'profitable' film group, in terms of money/equipment/time......but we are indeed attempting to get there. wink

The editing on my trailer is going smoothly in case anyone is wondering. We've actually managed a few cool shots, so I'm hoping this turns out well. I'm not expecting to beat Ben, but I'd like to make the short list obviously. wink

I'm doing some compositing, muzzle flashes, and sound effects/ music now. You should see my office- it's quite a mess.

Here's one or two scenes that look kinda nice because of the lighting:
Image 1
Image 2

Keep in mind, they're eunedited and ungraded in this form.

I couldn't get my friends Reese and Josh to drive the 90 minutes from San Antonio to Austin tonight to film, so it's dubious as to whether we'll get ours all done and uploaded before midnight tomorrow.....yiiiiikes.

Would be a shame to have shot and edited half the thing and have put in all the effort we have so far for nothing. Also having trouble coordinating our music re-dub in Savannah, GA because of miscommunication and internet issues.

But, all things considered, we've certainly come down to the wire on plenty of competitions in the past, so it's really what we can do in the final 10 hours of the day tomorrow......

Just uploaded my submission to the competition! Cool competition, that has to be said - was really fun to have to figure out what a trailer consists of. Had some pretty crazy production issues while shooting the film with everything from our "deserted" hostel not at all being deserted (some scary stuff indeed) to most of work being gone because of a hard drive crash just a few days ago. Having edited the trailer and uploaded it all during the last couple of days' train rides (I'm writing this from a high speed train ride back from Stockholm right now) I'm quite happy how it turned out. Hope to participate in future competitions as well!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHVZ_0J1BLA

Hopefully my film school will be a bit quieter the upcoming few weeks or so - I've been a bit quiet around here, but just so you know I'm still constantly browsing the forums, and I can't wait to see what all you guys come up with to the competition (I've so far refrained from checking out the other entries before finishing my trailer, but I will try to watch most of them on what is left of my 5 hour train ride home).

Good luck to everyone! Also, hope you get to finish your submission, ben3308 - would like to see what you've come up with smile There's still a few hours to go!

Gonna be tough to finish ours in time, since the quality and 'hit-maker' ability of it is much more important than getting it in to the contest in time for us.

But still, it'd be nice. We'll see!

It's done! Wasn't sure I'd make it but I just managed it, having worked solidly for two days on it. Probably shouldn't have shot a third of it against green screen...or wanted so much fully CG shots...

Good luck everyone!

Grading and putting the last minute color corrections in place. The rendering from Vision Lab could be a little faster. I've got a bunch of scenes lined up and with just 2 computers running (1 Vegas, 1 VLab) it's tough. Should be done and posted by 11pm with any luck. wink

Great competition FXHome, found the trailer format is great for trying out new ideas.

Uploaded mine last week, but have been enjoying all the other entries so far, some really good stuff.

@ben3308 - Just watched Inebriation really funny and looks amazing. Best of luck getting your entry finished, looking forward to watching it.

We're scrambling and literally just using anyone now to be in our trailer, we'll see how it goes, we have a handful of hours in our time zone before the clock runs out but still........it's gonna be close.

Almost done. Literally shooting some of an actual party as the final shots right now. Gonna be a mad dash. Mad. But sooooo goddamn close.

Which one's yours, rogolo? Love the team-up with Bryce- been meaning to do that ourselves whenever he next returns to Texas...

So did you finish? It's not the 29th anywhere in the world anymore.

Looking forward to the results. Looks like there have been some good entries.

Okay, well, here it is. No, it's not the trailer we've been talking about.

When we set out to make something, we thought for a very long time on what to do. At the end, where we are now, we realized just how much we poured our heart and soul into this- "The Brocial Network"- and realized......it's just much bigger to us than a submission to a contest. You can obviously tell where this is going from here, but I'm going to explain further anyway.

You see, from the very beginning of the contest- the ANNOUNCEMENT of it, even- we knew the idea had to come first and be really strong in order to make it all worthwhile- and like any good sequel of a better-than-average franchise, we knew that it was UNLUCKY of us from the get-go to have just made our popular Inception parody/internet hit "Inebriation". Because that just meant/means we'd have to top it.

So after a long while of thinking and discussing and looking at the resources we had, we went at it. And we've been ecstatic with the results we've produced. Working with two of our great friends and constant collaborators who now live out-of-town, we still made it work. We've shot mostly between the hours of midnight and 5am on different days- shooting creatively often to get the two actors in the same scene when neither of them are there at the same time. But we made it work. We took chances, and they paid off.

Additionally we've been working more than we ever have within the nit-pickyness of a college campus, and working out the use of a plethora of other venues and actors- it's been crazy that we've found such success. That we've got nearly to the finish line so quickly.

But alas, we're not quite there. With most all of the shots in the can, with several fantastic actors, a great premise, and closely-matched locations to boot, we couldn't release something haphazardly for the sake of entering the contest. It just didn't set right with us thinking about it.

We could turn it in, yes. It is completed, shot, and edited beyond a point that we might in some circumstances consider enough. We could stop and render now, and you probably would wonder what else we have to get. And, in all honesty, we still think we'd have a decently reasonable (probably good, actually) chance of winning this contest.

But for that 95% shot, there's still that golden 5%- that extra mile- that we really want to go for. And it isn't worth it to us to show off the trailer without that 5% just for the contest's sake, only to pull it and put up the 'real' version later. Because that's just so damn petty and silly, and while we absolutely are thrilled and care about the contest- we care more about not hastily doing things. Not half-assing our way into this thing.

And so, we're stepping back from our mad-dash efforts, and finishing this sucker the right way. We started to have an argument about it, but the consensus very quickly all went the same direction: Do it right.

With an all-original parody musical track sung by Chase Arrington, the most ambitious setups we've yet attempted (and not just on parody work), and with some of the highest and most-succinct production values we've ever pushed- "The Brocial Network" just feels like The Godfather II that we want to follow our first Godfather with.

But, like we said: you can't follow-up The Godfather with The Godfather III. It's still a great movie, but nowhere comparable. That's where our trailer is right now, and we want more- because that's not good enough for us. For our audience. Or for you guys.

No, for this you need a Godfather II- and we believe "The Brocial Network", in it's finalized form, will be exactly that. So apologies on us not quite making the contest, but know we've tried. We've given it our all, and got much more out than a kitsch, lackluster follow-up to a one-trick-pony: We've got something were greatly proud of, and wanna make the absolute best.

We'll see you again when we get to that point. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask us. It's been the busiest month we've ever had for our filmmaking, for our video business, and for our artistic prospects- and we're really happy and excited to share more of that with you guys soon.

For as loud as I love to be, my required silence has been killing me! Hopefully "The Brocial Network" will tie both of us over until at least the end of 2010- when we can maybe begin to talk up more of what we're doing nowadays! wink

It's coming first thing tomorrow morning UK time!

Sorry about the wait, unfortunately we discovered that there's only a finite number of hours in the day. We're in discussions with Time to see if something can be done about that, as it's most inconvenient. razz

Just a quick question. I was wondering if the number of people who will make it to the shortlist will still be five, or if the cap number had been changed.

And, secondly: Will another contest such as this be held yet again, (maybe soon)?

I had a lot of fun making this and I think other such people did as well. Thanks Tarn!

We've got 5 shortlisted finalists, who will be announced in the next couple of hours (we're just uploading some bits and pieces and getting the voting page online).

We'd love to do another contest, although we'll need to have a lie down for a while before we do another one. wink
