Ok, the start and end width scales don't affect the normal lightning effect. Any help?

What do you mean by 'normal lightning effect'?

Turning up the Start Width will make the core thicker at the starting end of the bolt. Turning up the End Width will make the core thicker at the ending end of the bolt. Its fairly straightforward. Like this.

Can you give more details of what exactly the problem you are having is?
