I wish to run my camera direct to photokey and do the compositing before I take the image...

this way I can be sure the lighting is right. Is that possible?

I have a Nikon d40 and Canon G9

No, you have to take the shot before you can composite it in PhotoKey.

However, with PhotoKey 4 Pro (or PhotoKey 3 Pro) you can set up a hot folder so that if your camera is tethered to your computer, once you get your lights adjusted correctly, every image you snap will automatically import into PhotoKey.
