PhotoKey 4 or Pro for T-Shirt Printing?

Good morning all,

This is probably going to be an odd posting for this forum so please excuse me.

Last July I purchased a NeoFlex Direct to Garment printer, this allows us to print images directly (through RIP software) onto any colour cotton shirts. On dark shirts we first have to print a white underbase.

This is an example of the quality of print we can produce, these are printed on cotton T-shirt:




This year, now that we've gained experience of using the printer & software we're planning on taking the printer to shows & race circuits (driving fast is a hobby of mine). What I'm thinking of doing is taking pictures of people and, using chromakey to change the background - we'd only be printing to white shirts thereby avoiding the prep times for dark shirts.

Chromakey is a technique I've never used before and I guess, using it at a show/track will make it a little more of a challenge, maybe it's a challenge to far?

I know I'm going to have to buy equipment (I have the camera & lenses). What should I buy:

Software - Needs to be simple, quick and perhaps designed especially for chromakey work.

Green backdrop - I've looked on 'Fleebay' but a little concerned I might end up buying crap! Maybe there's a chromakey tent lol

Lighting/reflectors - Will I need this bearing in mind I'll be outdoors?

Because of the medium I'm printing to, I'm not going to produce photo studio quality prints, this is mainly for fun so if you have any tips I'd really appreciate them.

Pick up a green screen from our friends at www.tubetape.com -they have a lot of great stuff that is very fairly priced. As for lights- indoors shoots this will be important, but I find that overcast days work best for green screening outdoors and requires very little in the way of lights and reflectors.

Software- are you looking for green screen/ chroma key software for photography purposes? I assume so considering the nature of your work but just wanted to check. If this is the case, Photokey 4 and Photokey 4 Pro are really awesome and have many different, and useful, features.

The shirts look good though- nice job, and I am looking forward to seeing more. wink

This certainly sounds very doable. As DVStudio says, greenscreening outside in natural light can actually work very well, but it will depend on the conditions and positioning of your setup. Strong sun from the wrong angle could end up casting all kinds of awkward shadows on your screen.

As a concept this is absolutely doable, though. You can download a demo of PhotoKey, so I'd definitely recommend running a few tests before trying it live at an event.

When TubeTape went down to San Diego to do event photography, we worked with an extra large chromakey green flex screen and PhotoKey 4 Pro. The software and screen worked great, the only challenge was the setting sun and the wind.

What we did to battle the light was set up a large canopy tent that people could stand under. That way, we weren't competing with the harsh shadows. We also just used a flash diffuser ("fong bong" is what it is called) on the camera in place of any lights, and even after the sun started to go down, the camera flash offered more than enough light.

The wind gets tricky. If you are not working against a wall where you can stabilize your greenscreen,make sure you have a stable stand setup. And as Tarn says, test, test, test! Practice makes perfect, and you will always want a test run through of ALL of your equipment before you get to your event.
