I just can't figure this out...

I'm doing a thing where I just straight up blast lightning out of two fingures. IT'S AWESOME. Only problem is that I can't get the lightning right. I sorta want it to where it flickers. Like you see it for a bit, then it disappears for a second, then come back, that type of thing. Any suggestions?

Also, how can I make it look like it's coming at the screen, as if I was blasting it at whoever's watching?

P.S. I was just kidding around when I said it was awesome, and almost the rest of the first two sentences. That's not my personality, so noone say I'm a self-absorbed, gloating jerk. Please...?

Did you try applying a transparency filter and keyframing it to make the effect disappear occasionally?

Making it appear to come at the screen is going to be a perspective thing, the ends of the bolts nearest the camera need to be much thicker than the opposite ends.
