So far I've found the best 3D program by long shot is Maya. It's just ridiculously better than the rest.

Of course, there is the slight drawback of the $1999 price tag (minimum...).

Tarn,
Is Maya better because of Render times, Ease of use or interface?

or all of the above?

thanks

Yeah . . i have the same question . . . .

Is it a stupidly complicated program? Would you be able to pick it up if you knew basic 3D stuff, or is it a completely different interface from most apps?

Hey, Sorry for my lateness, I've been away...

Yes, I would definately recommend Cinema4D. There are more powerful 3D packages out there (such as 3D max and for sure Maya). But the greatest strength of C4D is it's ease to use. C4D is by far the simplest 3D tool concerning the userinterface. And you will get very professional results.
So if you're new in the 3D world I would definately go with C4D cause you will learn it very fast...

Take a look at CAT SCRAP, ERM DOGFIGHT in the cinema, that was done entirely in Cinema 4D, and a bit more shameless promotion for myself. biggrin

As Solthar says it is much easier to learn that most other 3d packages, and I think the built in render engine is better than loads of other packages too.

now lets see hmmm why is maya better than the best???
first the cons lol
1. where the hell is spline modeling!!! only nurbs and polygon!! sad
2. so many hrs to render the most simple scene!!
3. no- global illumination in the best 3d app !!! cant believe my eyes tard .

pros:-
1. Easy to use (once u get the hand of it)
2. Maya painteffects- (i was thinking about making a 3d garden but how'll i do the grass with out modeling and then scattering em in max! and i needed hair on my character!, in maya u just paint stuff on objects, like hair or even paint on ur textures wink
3. Artisian tool- no more need for soft selections in 3dsmax this is ur answer if u wanna make mountains n stuff
4. FuildEffects (unlimited version only!) - Want realistic water for ur next cg sea adventure biggrin, a remake of the t-1000 falling into molten metal or hot fliud or something lol
5. Good polygon and nurbs modeling tools, both are used in conjunction to make full 3d characters
6. One of the Best IK and FK system in the world
7. Use mel to make things easier
8. Organise ur interface to suit ur needs biggrin
9. Most customizable renderer
10. The most ultimate softbody dynamics u can get in a 3d app

Kinda one sided isnt it??

no mecha its a very easy program to use, my knowledge of nurbs and polygons from max always came in handy, it not much of a different program, but the cons i found are
the ones i'v given above and:-
too much max track view style mumbo jumbo to do the most simple animation

and the best pro is u get 1. fur and 2. Maya live (an intergrated matchmover!) so u can easily use it in ur dxm movie

I know a lot of people who don't celebrate christmas... Here in switzerland, only few people still believe in God and Jesus, so to many here christmas has no point but simply a tradition. Then some people like traditions, others don't... smile
