I worked fairly hard to match the model lighting to the location background plate as far as lighting direction...but I think that the saucers approach shot on the state capital looks like it has multiple lighting sources instead of just the sun...something I need to work on.
We shot some acting scenes and almost all of the efx plates last summer, so I've got all winter to get those looking right before we start shooting the rest of the script this spring.
Any suggestions on improving the 3d stuff is welcome.

Where's the music from? I can't quite put my finger on it, but the violin part sounds like its from Gladiator.

I can tell why the 3D don't integrate perfectly into the filmed footage. The contrast. Look at the contrast between the original plate and the digital plate. The 3d has the much darker black and the much higher contrast, thats why it doesn't fit.
But otherwise it looke pretty cool.

Good ear. The music is "Mars-The Bringer of War" from "the Planets" by Gustav Holst. Hans Zimmer was definitely influenced or ripped off (depending on how you look at it) by the piece for Gladiator. I believe Mars has been used in several trailers.
Hey thanks...I think you nailed it exactly. That's really going to help as I finish these shots up this winter. Really appreciate that tip.

I think the UFOs could do with a little bit of blur; that should mute them sufficiently to make them look less "2-D" (like paper cut-outs)
Did you anti-alias the edges, btw?
Again, splendid stuff! I'll be keeping an eye out for the final release!

The "saucers" are actual 3d models (as is the mother ship). I had smoothness set to max when rendering.
The other shots are using the Cylon alamdv plugin that Kermz did. I didn't adjust any aliasing with those.

If you have actual 3D models and can obviously handle them pretty well, we do you go with 2D stills as well? They will never look as good as real 3d.

I originally was going to use only the Alam Cylon plugin as I had no 3d program, so those are actually older shots. A few weeks ago I purchased a 3d program.
I'm really not very comfortable with 3d yet, and I imported my meshes from free ones I found on the web.

I knew I recognized that music! Its from the new X2 trailer. Good choice. Loved the effects! This would be really really good if it wasnt a comedy. I'm thinking of making a movie about what a invasion would be like myself. But mine wont be as generic, no offense. I give it a 4.

No offense taken. It's supposed to be generic and filled with cliches, but the teaser and upcoming trailers will all look fairly serious.

I really enjoyed the trailer. I especially liked the building exploding with flying debris. The credits look great too. Are the credits done in Premiere?

All of the titles, including the UFO logo at the end were done in Vegas Video....also the photo pans and zooms. I love Vegas.
Thanks for the comment on the building. As I work on that shot some more I will have huge chunks torn out of the building when it explodes. Just takes a while to do that stuff.

I couldn't give it 3 1/2, so went for 3
The first part was good.
The music volume was a bit uneven, the quiet part early on was too quiet.
The Effects were OK; the models were good, although they stood out against the background a bit. Just read the other messages, and I was wondering; did you render them at a really high resolution? For extra realism, you could render them at the same res as the footage was captured. This should stop them looking "too" real...
Then I got to 38 secs...
From then on it was excellent!
Special Effects(38 secs on)
Choice of music (Mars rocks! try mussorgsky for other dramatic music)
That building explosion
3D compositing (early on)
Were those ships Cylon raiders? What 3D package are you using?
Can't wait for the next one!

That was kewl, can't to see the full short, i like the 3d work, was that 3ds max used to make that building blow up into teeny pieces? looked like a bit of PArray action
