As many of you have already noticed the AlamDV movie rating scheme is changing.

The old method of letting all users rate each movie out of 5 stars was becoming outdated and prone to cheating. Which is why we have introduced the spiffy new Personal Top Ten. This allows you to select your own all-time favorite movies from our cinema.

At the end of each day we will be looking at everyones personal top ten and generating an overall ranking for each movie. This will be used to generate our charts and top tens.

To combat those pesky cheaters and vote riggers the main chart will only be based on the personal top tens created by gold users. There will also be a chart based on all users for people interested in that, but this will obviously by susceptible to cheating and shouldn't be taken too seriously. Also, we have made a special chart that is weighted by force rankings; the more force you have the greater your influence on the rankings will be.

OK, so how do you get to play with all this funky stuff? The most important new page is the Top Ten Customizer page. You can get to this page via your profile or at the bottom of a movie details page. The customizer lists all the movies from our cinema (apart from any movies you submitted yourself) so you can pick your favorites and add them to your top ten. It also allows you to move movies up and down your top ten so you can order them how you wish. You can go back to the page and re-edit your selection at any time. Once you hit submit we will record your choices and other people will then be able to view your recommendations via your profile.

The other way to alter your top ten is to look for the box at the bottom of a movie details page. This will give you a quick drop down list of your top ten and allow you to insert the new movie into it.

You can view the overall rankings in a couple of places. The top ten on the cinema page now features the movies ranked by the gold users, as this is now our main ranking method. If you wish to see the top ten based on all users or the force weighted one this is currently an option on the Cinema Stat Funbox on the community page.

This is the first stage in improving the cinema. Over the next few months we hope to revamp other parts and introduce new features. We will be looking into the problems with browsing the archive and making sure everyone has a fair chance to get their movie seen. As always, your suggestions and ideas are very welcome.

I'd like to thank all the AlamDV community who have made suggestions and hashed this idea out. Especially Sidewinder who finalized this design. I hope it meets everyones approval smile

the top ten on the cinema is the gold users top 10 (ie soley based on what gold users think is good)

The 'All users' top 10 looks very similar because currently theres only a few non-gold users that have made a personal top ten and they have voted similarly to everyone else anyway

I did'nt realise how difficult it would be selecting my choice of 10 films.
So the idea of changing your preferences over time is "brilliant" cos I wanted to put a lot more than ten movies up but this way I can give ALL my favourites a chance.
I LIKE IT.

Top notch, well done and about time biggrin

This will help all of us out and see where we stand in real life, rather than rigger city.

Great job.

Two things that are interesting to note.

Firstly, Schwar went through all the votes - every single one - and removed all the dubious ones. This resulted in the rankings changing very, very little.

Secondly, this new system has also revealed that the original rankings were largely accurate.

Malone has done an excellent job introducing these new features, but I can't help but wonder where the furore came from in the first place - especially since it turned out that several (not all) of those accusing the cinema of suffering from vote rigging were the very people carrying out the unfair voting in the first place...

As for those suggesting that we took a long time to get this 'fixed', it might be worth noticing that Malone implemented these changes within a week of the 'situation' arising. If you are used to companies radically changing their websites at the request of users in less than two weeks I would be very surprised.

Let this be the last word on the subject.

Hi Tarn...could you please explain...quote:

Are you really saying that some of the members who posted about problems on the voting were actually "riggers" themselves.

I am guilty

yes, I got to a point where people was pm'ing me, saying have you seen this account, anyone that see's the list i have ( and as far as i know the csb crew haven't seen it and proberly have used there method of checking via ip addresses insted of the good old fashioned footwork, so please don't say that the list i have is incorrect unitl you've seen it. ( i just got fed up cry
the list mainly has one person causing the problems and the way the votes were would not have affected the topten much, but on an personal level it did effect. ( i'm not talking about me, before people think oh no, he's at again about his bloody films, ) I repeat i was noticing this when i had no films on here.

I am guilty, not of vote rigging, but of replacing votes that were ( and i use the word, "completly" bogus. I know this could be deemed the same as rigging, I replaced votes on all the films that was hit in the topten, to be honest i was hoping the main rigger would notice that everytime he done wrong it was getting replaced...... but in the end he made more accounts nearly 20, and i wasn't going to create 20, and that when i suggested the b4 team, i couldn't stop that on my own.,and maybe i should have left it to the owners of the site.

I hope I will be forgiven. confused

Don't hang yourself yet b4.....You had posted this very thing a while back saying if you found a rigger you would counteract his vote by other means.....until such time the system was sorted. Now I've put this post up working on memory only so I'm sure his original post on this will still be available.I don't class this action as "rigging"as in the underhanded style of others.
I'm also not saying I agree with this type of action but I certainly understand it.

I must add the B4 is a friend of mine and I've never had any reason whatsoever to doubt his word at anytime.

2 words:

Friggin tight!

Go sidewinder, for being so smart. But what happens to all the movies that aren't on people's top 10's? How will they be rated? I saw that votes are still impletmented . . .

Well I think the scroll downlist of available movies a great idea. I intend to readjust my selection quite frequently basically because there's so much good stuff there.I made my list a little earlier and then realised I wanted other movies in but only 10 being the list I will keep it moving..does that make sense.

yeah, you can still give stars if you feel like increasing someone's self-esteem, or if you want to rate a movie not on the top 10. Stars are what's used for sorting out the archive.

Bravo- Super Idea and I can't believe how quickly Malone implemented this. Major Kudos to everyone. I am hopeful that one of the changes slated for the cinema section is a randomizer showcase so that all of the films will get a chance at making it on the main page. Way to go everyone-

Hey malone -

Could I see the math as to how the system works?

I'm pretty confused -
