Hi Everyone,

As we are a little over due with AlamDV2 we are going to keep you up to date here with what is going on.

I must apologies for AlamDV2 being late - I'm working on it 24/7 to get it out.

To avoid any of the evil little bugs we have had with previous releases we will be releasing AlamDV2 first as a beta. This beta will go out to all the purchasers of AlamDV1 and the pre-orders of AlamDV2 (we will email you your new serial code).

The releases data for the beta is the 20/11/2001 although I am trying for earlier.

AlamDV2 will then go through a three week beta test where we will ask you to test it to the max. At the end of the beta period AlamDV2 will be released to the world. We currently have many magazines lined up to do reviews of AlamDV2 so this is an exciting time.

Even more exciting it Malone's new AlamDV web site. He has also been working 24/7 to create the best web site in the world. AlamDV will really be the best place on the net with all new Cinema and Community sections.

Later today I will put up the first pictures of the all new AlamDV2 interface in action. There have been even more advances in the user interface including the ability to skin AlamDV.

AlamDV2 should have at least 5 different skins available on launch.

Back to AlamDV2.

Just some more information relating to AlamDV2.

AlamDV2 will come with at least 2 skins (AlamDV2 Standard, Windows 9X). We should have about 5-6 by launch and at that time some information will be released to help you make your own.

Apple UK will be using AlamDV2 to demonstrate special effects at a consumer level in a tour round the UK and Europe.

Thanks guys smile

Here for the first time is a screen shot from AlamDV2. Ignore the values on the sliders as I was working on that part of the program at the time and they don't mean anything.

This is the interface running at 800x600 which is the minimum size (I have scaled it down for the web).

Questions??

Which "skin" is that? And may we have a peek at another skin? Sorry, I could not help myself. razz Also, this may be a silly question but will we (the endusers) have the ability to make our very own skin for it?

HI average Joe
It looks like a...blue...skin to me.
Wouldn't it be super slick to apply your own skin and personal touche to AlamDV?
hehehe

Codec3 is leading me into this one because he already know the answer really smile

You will be able to make your own skin - its just a load of image files.

The skin shown in the image is one of the standard skins that will be bundled with the release version of AlamDV2.

Oh, it's blue.... I hoped that maybe someone had sat up all night and come up with sexy names for the different skins. Yeah, I am a silly smartass but it takes one to know one biggrin. So intead I thought a silly name for the skin would be in order... how about the blue one be "Arctic" or if you perfer the Southern Hemisphere "Antarctic" now all it needs is a cute little Penguine as the animated office helper. Yeah and then you can get Madonna to sing a song for the adverts for it with people flying around with sticks in hand that magically turn into lightswords.... DAMN I just saw an ad on TV with People flying and Modonna singing. DAMN YOU BILL GATES.... DAMN YOU TO HELL. Sorry got a bit carried away. I think I will be happy with just the ability to personalize ALAMDV for now razz. Maybe you could start a SKIN swapping thing on the site. Call it... "Show us your skins". Okay I will stop now. Yes a I know I am a silly, silly man.

Thanks for the great support.. What can I say?

I've had people talking to me in the middle of the night and wishing us all the luck in the world. We are really touched and thank you for your support. It is currently about 4am and I am still working on AlamDV2.

The layers interface has been a bit of a problem. I started down one route a while back and although I got quite far, it turned out to be no good.

AlamDV2 can already create some stunning effects that far surpass the quality of AlamDV1 but for AlamDV2 to succeed it needs to have a really simple but powerful interface. To this end I decided to go for a much more powerful method for controlling the layers. This method is smart to use but hard to code ... I think I've made the break through today.

AlamDV2 Beta 1 (still coming out on the 20th I hope) will be fairly limited in some ways. At worst it will have the capabilities of AlamDV1. If you are going to test it then DO NOT do the following things:

1. Do not delete your copy of AlamDV1.
2. Do not try to open AlamDV1 files with AlamDV2 (.alm files)

The first beta will mainly be an interface test. The render component will still be in its alpha stage and I don't think it will have the masking sorted. QuickTime export will still be limited to a single codec (Planar RGB none compressed). I might not even include the new AVI import component in the first beta as it might just be too much to test in one go. The interface is a huge departure from AlamDV1 so it will need a huge amount of testing. It will also be a good time to tells us things like "when is did xxxxxx I expected xxxxxx to happen but it did this instead".

I want to do some internal tests of the new AVI component with your problem codecs. If you have a problem with a certain movie codec then I would like you to email me at josh@csb-digital.com with the name of the codec and where I can find it. I may ask you to send me a small piece of footage but please don't do this unless I ask or my email will be like 10,000MB smile

Oh yeah! Here is your present for today. A little picture of the new AlamDV2 logo. It has been revised so please tell us what you think.

Speak to you soon.

Josh

Hi Everyone.

Just another update to the progress of AlamDV and what has been implimented.

But before that, someone suggested that we let you guys have a go at making a new AlamDV2 logo (guess he didn't like mine much). Feel free to have a go and send us the results or post them here. We can have a vote and everything. Just note that it needs to be fairly simple so it can be viewed at different sizes.

Right, back to the program. Basically I've been putting the beta together and it hasn't been much fun so far but I am getting somewhere. I've got some anti alias texted now to help the interface look cool and the skins now work fine. The new movie control slider is really good as it spans the whole screen.

I've been working on the new Import Wizard and so far its looking good. I don't know how much of it will be in the beta. Probably most of it.

Dialogs are now more standard than ever following the same theme as AlamDV1 Final. Some people have requested that the "New Project" dialog doesn't appear on launch and I was wondering if this was a general feeling?

The zooming is really cool - you can work on the project at 75% - imagine that razz

Rendering speed is gonna be slower for the final render, in some cases a lot slower. If the user makes masks then this takes ages to process.

I've started the rendering engine and I have a really important question. Do people just want a simple mask that does all the effects or one for each effect. The first I can do quite easily (ahem) but the second is a lot harder and will use a lot more memory. It will also increase render times by up to 25 times!!

Please say you want the first one biggrin

Anyway - things are looking good on the AVI side of things and we should have some more QuickTime export codecs (including DV) but not in the beta. We are also working on keeping sound in a post release version (i.e. 2.1 or something).

Just to share some more csb-digital news with you guys. We have confirmed at least 12 magazines for reviews in Jan/Feb next year and also some deals are going down with a well known computer company ... more of that sometime later.

Right, back to AlamDV2, more interface shots will appear soon.

Just another update to tell you how things are going.

Firstly, if you have sent a support email in the last few days and it hasn't got answered then its probably my fault. Malone is mega efficient and answers all his but I've been working so hard I haven't had any time to answer them - I'll try this weekend.

AlamDV2 Plug-ins are much more powerful and, at the request of our users, we have added some key functions. Firstly the final version will allow you to make plug-ins just by selecting files - you don't have to make any scripts. Secondly, some people requested alpha channel support. We haven't been able to get TARGA alpha working quite right but we've got TIFF alpha working perfectly. You can easily convert you TARGA alphas to TIFF using a shareware image application. I know Graphics Converter for Mac can do this, any ideas for the PC?

We will not support seperate masks anymore as they were just rubbish and TIFF's with alpha don't have the alignment problems that our old mask had.

This is a major update to the plug-in engine as it allows you to make some really good smoke and fire effects but beware resolution as TIFF files (like TARGA files) are huge and I've made some plug-ins that were 50MB compressed!!!!

Take a look below at some cool AlamDV2 alpha plug-ins. The one on the left shows Buffy The Vampire slayer style dusty death smoke and other is me being shot smile

As AlamDV2 can now handle alpha channel you can just change the transparency of the effects as you wish smile

Back to work...

Hello Everyone,

Yet again I'm writing to you at gone 6 in the morning. So the question is "Will AlamDV2 Beta 1 Still be out on the 20th?"

Well that is still what we are aiming for. I have a lot to do before then and it might be pretty late on Tuesday but the beta should appear. Thanks again for all the great support I've been given by users visiting the chat room in the wee small hours - it really keeps me going.

I must make a personal shout out to Craig. He is currently working on a magazine advert for us and he is doing a fantastic job - "GOOD ONE CRAIG, YOU DA MAN!" (that was me shouting out).

I'm not going to write anymore - I'm just going to get on with it, after all, actions speak louder than words smile

Just a favorite image of mine... "The Great One" being zapped

Hi again people.

Right, I'm between 6-10 hours away now. Just to prepare people - this is the first beta - not the finished program. It can't do lots of the stuff AlamDV1 can do. It won't have very good export and you won't be able to save your projects.

DON'T DELETE ALAMDV1!!!

If you are not interested in testing the interface and helping me make it better then wait for the beta 2 or 3. We will release a new beta every week for the next 2 weeks then the final version on the 17th. For the hardcore fans we will release new exe bug fixes daily.

So please note that this is an interface test beta - not the whole program. The whole program would be too much to test in one go and as the interface is the main part of the program, thats where we start.

Back to work then...

There wont be anymore AlamDV2 beta updates in this thread or forum (until the final version is released).

All beta related discussions should be moved to the AlamDV2 beta forum
